This is something i’ve been wondering ever since i played Halo Reach. I had taken a break from Halo and played other shooters instead so when i tried Reach for the first time as much fun as it was there was something lacking: Reward
So in other shooters you are given many objects, items and perks to customize your gameplay and that sort of incentive keeps people coming back for more, you are basically doing the same thing but there is this drive to play some more in order to unlock that nice reticule or cammo. Just look at Destiny, a barebones game that keeps people hooked with its intensive customization and reward. Halo is massively lacking on that field… you get armor pieces but they are redundant on the battlefield since you are not going to notice any of it when every soldier is the same color.
In my opinion this is probably the most important and relevant factor to keep people playing the game, rewards and player customization. Even if they are merely cosmetic, something reticle colors or shapes, cloaks, hoodies, new voices or visor effects, new gun sounds and effects. Something tangible, something that doesnt require a year of farming to achieve (like Reach high end’s items). Something that is constantly giving.
I would love it if every month or so a new armor was added for players to work towards getting. Spartan voices or different weapon or armor camos would be cool.
That’s not any sense of reward. That’s a tactic by video game companies to get you addicted to their games. They want you to feel like you have to keep playing because there’s always something next. A level up system like this, while also an addiction tactic, is a far better reward system because it requires you to actually get better at the game. Improve your play and rank up, and maybe you can become a pro. Not pump more hours in and we will give you better guns, better perks, better abilities, etc. so that you beat all the players who don’t play as much as you.

Seems like games that offer that addiction /collection factor maintain their population longer though. Ranking systems are really niche, and often buried down inventories. I honestly don’t care about a number on my plate, but i would love some slick cloak to my spartan.
Asthetic changes don’t matter its not halo: fasionistas
I played Halo CE and Halo 2 for years. I’m not driven by unlocking things that have no impact on the game. A fun game can be played for years with out unlocking useless in game garbage.
