Now I’d like to start off by saying that this post is specifically targeted towards the competitive ranking system in Halo 5. I would also like to say that I love competitive ranking, it was why I loved Halo 3.
So I have no clue what judges what rank you get as an outcome of your ten qualifying matches other than wins. I know in Halo 3 you would have a higher chance of ranking up if you had a worse team, but I’ll get to that in a second.
So in the breakout playlist I won 10/10 qualifying matches whilst playing with a friend who had a division two silver rating. Out of these 10 games we had defeated a semipro ranked player 3 games and an onyx ranked player 8 games. Our team was (based off average rank) out-ranked for 9/10 games (meaning that the enemy team was statistically better than ours based off rank). So I was almost positive that I would end up in the semipro or possibly even the pro ranks. So as you can imagine I was pretty annoyed and utterly confused as to how I ended up in Gold division 1. Thats my rant over and if anyone could fully explain how these qualifying matches work it would be great, because I won 5/10 in strongholds and got onyx 2, this was also very stupid and I thought u was on track for a bronze.
Now to the other issue of how I ranked players can match pros or semi pros. This is very stupid from both sides if the spectrum, if you’re a pro who gets an unranked noob on your team, this is extremely frustrating as loses this high up give you 20-40 point reductions. And if you’re a new player up against elite veterans then you’re probably going to be turned away from the game before you even get a rating, now I realise this doesn’t happen every game, but when it does it ruins that match. I believe to solve this problem unranked players should only be able to match as high as gold or maybe onyx, this would give them a wide variety of skills to play against without the annoyance of matching extremely talented players.
Another problem with the ranking system is that it is based off team performance, now u realise that this is how it was in Halo 3, but in Halo 3 it was literally impossible to match players playing in party’s of 3 or 4 if you were playing in a 1 or 2, this system was great and I feel it is a necessity in Halo 5’s arena side. But if for some reason it isn’t incorporated then I believe I have come up with a viable solution to make solo play more enjoyable, because right now it is almost impossible to achieve a higher rating searching alone or in a smaller party:
I think that if a player is searching in a party of 1 or possibly 2 then the ranking system should bend a little more in their favour, perhaps ( now this is up for discussion) if the solo player loses a game but yet top their team then they should either lose non, a lot less or even gain a small amount of points towards ranking up, but the loss can still count in their statistics. Now I think this is fair, and even if they too you could place in some boundaries like they have to get above a 2.5 kills and assists to death ratio in that game, and they can’t get steaked ( their team must collectively gain a score over 30 before the enemy team reaches 50) now the example I have provided are just for slayer, but you could tweak them for objective game types or breakout.
I don’t know about you guys, but searching solo just ends in frustration when I have to try my -Yoink- off every single game and get above 20 kills to carry my team who don’t talk and have no thumbs and still end up losing.
Thanks for reading this far and post what you think on this thread, I personally don’t see many flaws with this system, but if you do then don’t be afraid to point them out
The easiest solution is to just drop the ranking system
I think we’re worrying too much about the ranking during the beta - I don’t like the penalty when you are playing on a terrible team, but I think they’ll fix this once H5 is released. Currently, I’d imagine the population size is quite small so once the game is released we should have a lot better matches, and matched with players of similar skill level.

I would like to think so, but players will probably still end up in a division that doesn’t correlate their skill, so matches will most likely still be uneven.
I win five… my rank is Onix 1 hahaha Very Crazy
Halo 5 ranking system seems to be pretty much just like cs go… so basicly win sucks when you run with pugs i guess…
Just played a game against a pro 2300’s and I had a silver I on my team. Ranks are broken.
- Iron ranked players should only meet Iron.- Bronze ranked players should only meet Bronze.- Silver ranked players should only meet Silver.- Gold ranked players should only meet Gold.- Onyx ranked players should only meet Onyx.- Semi-Pro ranked players should meet players within 100 points. A Semi-Pro 1600 should meet players between 1500 and 1700 rating. As of now, a typical match could be something like this:
- Red Team: 2 unranked, 1 Pro 2200, 1 Bronze- Blue Team: 2 Onyx, 1 Bronze, 1 Semi-Pro 1550Or this:
- Red Team: 4 Pro (2000 - 2100)- Blue Team: 2 Iron, 2 GoldIn each case, who’s having the time of their lives? The unlucky lone pro on his way to loosing a incredibly unfair game from scenario 1, or for example blue team from scenario 2? I would argue that not a single person is having an ounce of fun. At least not in comparison with the amount of fun these same people would of had if put put in fair games.
This is the case in MCC as well, and Halo 4. This is the case with everything out of 343 Industries pathetic portfolio.
