Greetings,
While browsing various YouTube videos, a comment jumped out at me stating the portal Voi shutdown in response to Cortana’s arrival at Earth.
Based on the cutscene, I was under the impression it shutdown with everything else due to the Guardian’s pulse.
Have I missed something or is this commentator in error?
Cheers,
Brad

Isabel in halo wars 2 says that the portal to the ark shutdown without warning.Im assuming a guardian pulse deactivated the portal, but idk if it works on forerunner tech

Idk if it does either. I was under the impression it hit everything but if you read Bad Blood it seems like Forerunner tech might have an immunity in some cases
The guardian attacking the United Rebel Front was hitting them with the attenuation pulse multiple times while armigers were still fighting on the ground, so it looks like they were unaffected. To answer OP, perhaps Mendicant Bias shut it down? Would love to have him in Halo Infinite. Like perhaps when the Guardians were awakened, he initiated the shutdown sequence on the portal. To Isabel then, it would seem sudden.

Mendicant Bias died on Installation 04B. When he spoke directly to Chief in Halo 3’s last terminal, he told that “I will keep you safe.”, meaning that he would keep the path we take in the Warthog Run stable in order for Chief to make it at his own expense. *“A life hardly balances millions”.*OP: Thinking about it, it makes sense if the Guardians were responsible for it’s shutdown. After all, after a quick check, Halo Wars 2 roughly takes place some 4 or 5 months after Halo 5, and Isabel does mention that it happened 4 months ago.
Thanks, guys. I’ve been out of the lore loop for a bit, so now I have a reference to catch up with anyway, I.e. Bad Blood.
Cheers,
Brad

There’s no evidence the any of it’s core processes were on the Ring itself, in fact it was likely still on the Dreadnaught or within the Ark. It could’ve simply expected to be destroyed when the ring fired, believing the Ark itself would be destroyed (like most of us at the time did). As this was not the case and the Ark in fact survived, there is no way to know for sure yet that Mendicant is alive or dead, simply that it expected to die based on that terminal transmission.

Read my whole comment again. He’s literally the reason why Chief was even capable of doing a Warthog Run.

I did, it was accessing the Ark’s systems as well as the Ring’s. Though its core processes likely weren’t on the Ring itself. Helping Chief while he was on the Ring does not equate to Mendicant actually being on the Ring. He is an AI after all. There are no confirmations that it actually died, the terminal simply shows Mendicant believed it would die.

Unless it can split itself, I really don’t believe that’s much the case. I’m finding that too hard to be possible.

It’s a highly advanced AI, way more advanced than Cortana or anything like her, and she can access multiple systems at once, as well as create fragments of herself (split herself). The main (known) fragment of Mendicant had been on the Dreadnaught, and was able to reconnect with another fragment on the Ark following the Dreadnaught’s trip there, regain much of it’s processes, and access multiple Ark systems, including the systems on the Halo Ring. It shows throughout the series it is able to split itself, as well as quickly transfer itself, and access remote functions. Not that hard to believe it can do the same here.
Something I’m interested in is has the portal just been open for years? That thing is huge, and it’s funny to think about it just hovering over Earth all this time.
I wonder if the UNSC has some kind of defense set up to prevent people from flying through, although I’m not sure who would want to go.

Nah it shut down while the FUD was going through. That’s why the back half with Chief in it was adrift and found its way to Requiem while the front half with Arby made it back to Voi. Read Hunters in the Dark if you haven’t already. The first chunk of the book is largely about getting the portal open again so the UNSC/SOS can send people back to the Ark.

In summary, it was activated by Truth, collapsed because of the ring, was reactivated again then the Guardians shut it down again. Correct?

That’s the way I’m seeing things. But my initial question was based in a YouTube commentator stating the portal shut itself down on the appearance if the guardian. This wasn’t the video poster, just something in the comments section.
I’ve become a bit fascinated with the portal and the Ark lately thanks to Halo Wars 2. The original enjoyment of the Halo 3 missions only solidifies that.
Cheers,
Brad

Oh duh. That was a major brain fart on my part. Of course the portal closed, otherwise Chief wouldn’t have been adrift.
I read it when it came out but apparently that got deleted from my memory banks. Thank you for the information I appreciate it!

It actually took me awhile til I realized why, in Halo Wars 2, the portal had shut down unexpectedly.
Which also has me wondering why Cortana hasn’t stopped at the Ark as of yet, although the Guardian halting Anders and her Halo probably have peaked her interest.
Cheers,
Brad

No worries JB Linken, there’s so much lore that we tend to forget things lol. Happens to me plenty. Halopedia saves me most of the time though.
SquareRigged I’ve been curious about Cortana’s interest in the Ark as well. I imagine she made the assumption that the Ark was obliterated and has yet to receive any information to suggest otherwise. Then when Anders came through on 04c, Cortana was like “hmmm that’s new” and may now start focusing her attention on the Ark. Could make for a good HW3 story if the SOF is kept out of Halo Infinite. Banished and SOF crew teaming up to take down the Created sounds so freaking awesome to me.

When was it clear that Cortana has any interest on the Ark?
The Banished it a purely anti-human faction. They wish to live and fight for their own reasons, but their hatred for Humanity still persists. It’s very unlikely to see them allying, even for a greater cause.
I’d argue the portal at voi shut down immediately when earth was attacked by the Created. The guardian wasn’t directly responsible for the shutdown and instead its mere presence overhead caused the portal to enact mergency shutdown is a failsafe if any exists. The Created are a threat to humanity who are the inheritors of everything the Forerunners left behind. So in the face of the Created gaining access to the Foundry responsible for galaxy wiping super weapons. The only logical choice is for the portals systems to enact a shutdown without warning.
