Any other thoughts are merely drops in the bucket to what’s really happening here. It’s not JUST SBMM, it’s not just weapon balancing or map layouts. It’s literally the fact that we feel absolutely zero sense of accomplishment in terms of stat tracking (No, I don’t give two yoinks about logging into Halo tracker) I’m talking about a mechanic/feature IN THE GAME when I turn infinite on. I’m talking about the massive lack of actual things to do (Forge, co-op, firefight, etc…) I don’t feel welcomed when the title launches it’s ugly, grainy looking mess of a menu and I certainly lose interest in playing GOD FORBID Alpha site for the sixth time in a row. Plain and simply there’s nothing to do in this title except shoot glowing guys over and over. Creativity has been ripped away, and this game needed to launch with it’s core mechanics intact to hold an audience.
It doesn’t matter if forge comes out in May and something else comes out nine months from now. This game needed to wow people NOW because this generation of both average gamers AND veteran Halo players are incredibly fickle! Younger gamers consume a title, judge it, and move on to the next thing while Halo fans expect more polished and numerous content upfront. Especially after the collosal failure that has been H4,5 and MCC (For the first few years). It’s okay if you like those, but the reality is Halo 5 did not hold high player counts and the drop off that Halo 4 had was infamously embarrassing. And we don’t even need to get into MCC’s launch.
Your first impression, ESPECIALLY now a days is everything!! EVERYTHING! And you have to show people what you have to offer. All the cards under your sleeve need to be laid out on the table.
Think about it: If some young kid or newer player jumps on your FTP Halo game and all they see is Matchmaking and another monetization scheme, they’re only going to think exactly what they think about any other game that has the same model, but offers more in terms of game modes and customization options and let’s be frank (Because Halo fans don’t want to hear this) VASTER POPULARITY! They’re going to go and play those games because this simply has nothing to offer them. And really it has nothing to offer us ( Seasoned Halo fans).
Halo, like marriage, is an old man’s comfort. You really needed to make this game appear “-Yoink!-” if you really wanted to hold numbers. You needed to have a vast wealth of options and content off batt to really make heads turn. But this ain’t it. This is unfortunately, whether people want to admit it or not… Just another Halo game. It’s just another shell of itself and it’s just sad.
And as much as people are going to ride on the “Well it plays good” or the “Give them time” all that ever has to be done to Trump that is a simple finger extension from a hand pointing straight at the last decade of mishaps. Learn from history or repeat it, they like to say.
This wasn’t a “The fans will bare with us moment” this needed to be Scarface at the climax, two rifles under each arm, kicking the door down “SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!” And that little friend should have been infinite. This was the last chance to really wow people. I’m not seeing that. I’m seeing an empty game and a lot of fan complaints and rightly so.
And frankly the promise of more to come doesn’t mean much to most of us. It just sounds like a desperate plea. And it sounds like more time nobody really feels they need to waste, because we’ve already been waiting for over ten years.
