Imo, I think the pilot is going to be a great character, even after seeing only the cinematic trailer. Already, he is more of an actual person and has more emotion than most of the other characters in H5.
Based on him possibly being a good character, would a spinoff be a good idea, and what story would you like to see in that spinoff?
Edit: I should say, even if he becomes a really good character or not, this can also be a post generalized for characters you want a spinoff on. The spinoff does not have to be it’s own game, and could even be an idea for DLC in Infinite.
Meh? I can certainly dig a spinoff title exploring space combat built around (but dramatically improved from) the basic flight stuff we saw in Reach and H4.
The Star Wars: Rougue Squadron games from back in the day are some of my favorites of all time (here’s hoping SW: Squadrons can live up to them), and while I understand that inherently the space combat in the Halo Universe is considerably less fantastic than that from Star Wars, Long Night of Solace from Reach in particular sells me on the idea that an enhanced and retooled experience built off that basic model for flight combat could really work in Halo; also the Composer “Trench Run” in H4 helps me believe that this format can be complimentary to big gameplay setpieces without taking anything very compelling away from the experience.
So if they announced a Halo flight game, I’d be thrilled. There’s a number of reasons I don’t think it’s very likely that they will anytime soon (The franchise needs to get back to firmer footing in its regular FPS field, mainly), but I would be excited to see what they could cook up around the idea.
As far as it possibly being based on the pilot from Discover Hope? I just really don’t think we’ve seen enough of him as a general audience to justify him getting a spinoff. There are several characters who are established and well loved in the Lore already who’ve never received any spin-off love (Arbiter, pre CE Johnson, etc.) all of whom I think would naturally come first in 343i’s consideration–unless and until, that is, the pilot really does prove himself to be an immediate and immense fan favorite.
TL;DR: I’d love a Halo spinoff that gravitate around piloting and aerial/space combat, but I don’t think we’re going to get one anytime soon, and I don’t think the pilot from the Infinite trailer has substantively proven he has the character intrigue to shoulder his own entire game or series w/in the Halo universe.
He’s a pelican pilot, ferrying soldiers from one place to another would hardly make for a compelling story, let alone the fact that multiplayer and coop modes would be nonexistent. I’d rather Locke get a spin off game, that way 343i could give him some character and provide an explanation for what he and Osiris are doing during Infinite, since they likely won’t be in the game. This would also give him a chance to shine, since he wouldn’t be overshadowed by the Master Chief in a spin-off.
I like the pilot. He doesn’t come off as too strong with their introduction like previous main characters in recent Halo titles and actually has a more humble and realistic feel to his nature so far. I wouldn’t mind a spin-off on him but I question how much can they really do with him.
Maybe we could see the pilot in an ODST type spinoff game.

Well yeah I don’t think we are going to get a spinoff at least for maybe 3 ish years after Infinite comes out? Maybe they had a flight game planned, implemented some of it into Infinite, and want to see the responses.
A spinoff for the pilot depends on how he is played out in Infinite. Otherwise, a spinoff for the older characters would be awesome… maybe not each their own spinoff, but possibly a collection of a couple campaigns for each person (I don’t think a new MP would be good in those).
But, if the Pilot is cool and most of us like him, I’d love to see a spinoff backstory game.

Seeing as he is brand new (Pretty sure, maybe something in a book I haven’t read?), they can really do anything with him if they made a spinoff. Even a free or cheap campaign dlc for some backstories on various characters would be cool.
What if the pilot, before joining UNSC, was part of an ODST squad, or he was a Flood response unit? With new characters you can do all kinds of things like that. Maybe he had some ties to the other spartans, good or bad.
As it’s own game, it probably wouldn’t work. As DLC, it would definitely have a higher chance.

While I think a spinoff sometime after Infinite is likely, if it was based off of any character, I highly doubt it would be about the pilot. If you really think about it, what would it’s selling point be? Is a game about the pilot interesting enough to most players? While I am saying he likely won’t get a spinoff game, i’m also saying I don’t want one. Think about how many other things in the Halo universe would make a more fun and unique game.

What do you think about a DLC collection (Maybe cheap individual, or all together) that had some shorter campaigns that included backstories on various characters? Doesn’t have to be the pilot, we might see enough of him in Infinite in the first place.
I don’t get it, sure the character is more realistic but barely a few minutes isn’t enough of a reason to make me want a spin-off, all it shows is better character development…unlike Palmer. Heck the only spin-off I can think of is if he had to survive, avoid the Flood by himself in a sort of Alien Isolation style game. Either way I’m not seeing anything worthy of spin-off material with the character. What would be worthy of a spin-off character by himself? Nathan Fillion as Buck but not the weird Halo 5 version.

Something like that is really the only way I see side stories like that seeing the light of day in main games.
