Do you think that the original theme is returning? It was absent in ODST, was here and there in different melodies in Reach, and appeared once in Halo 4. It’s got to be one of, if not the most iconic theme song in gaming ever, and I hope it returns in this game.
I highly doubt it, or any of the original music, is going to return.
New saga, new soundtrack, sry.
It was good to hear some of the callback cues to the earlier games’ scores in Halo 4, but with the way the story and universe is going it has to take the music with it too I guess. Maybe we’ll get some hints or alternate versions popping up like in 4?

Not exactly a good excuse. It’s iconic for the game itself. It can still fit in the new saga.

It’s a good enough reason. It represents the old trilogy and more specifically, Halo 1.
It is iconic so it should never be completely forgotten. It just shouldn’t be the first thing you hear when you start up every Halo game.
It might. Remember the CE tones in the animated poster video.

Go to 14:40. You’re welcome.
I think it will, in all the Halo 5 media so far we have gotten part of the original theme mixed in with the new themes by jinouchi. E.g. MCC e3 trailer last year, Chief and Locke tv ads, cover art trailer
I reckon it will be “teased” at in the music but not actually be there.
I would love it if you were on the last mission, got in a warthog, and the halo 3 “Finish the Fight” piano beginning struck even a few of its chords. My mind would be blown.
Also, 343 kind of gave us the theme with 117. Its the same time signature, same key, and on occasion uses the same escalating notes of the original theme.
Although from what has been pulled from vidocs, a lot of the old halo style and at least the song that started halo 3 are returning.
I think that they can use the main chant theme once or twice, but it kind of reminds me of Star Wars and the prequel trilogy. The soundtrack of Phantom Menace was the best part of the movie IMO, and while they mentioned and built off of the original theme, the rest of the music was very good as well. I liked the soundtrack of 4, it seemed similar enough to be recognized as Halo, but also new and good in its own right. The original theme could be used in the opening, the end, or at a climatic moment, but I don’t think they need to recycle the whole soundtrack.

I don’t think any of the original songs will appear in gameplay, but they’ll probably have the original theme play when the credits roll.
Why get rid of the original theme, it’s like getting rid of the original Star Wars theme for The Force Awakens.

There is going to be older songs remixed with a new twist from the samples we’ve heard so far.
With the new GameInformer video, it seems the original theme may be coming back.
The Halo theme has always been in the core Halo games. Even in 4. So I’m sure the tune will be there, just made to match the feel of the new soundtrack.
I would like it to play in emotional sections with chief and blue team and maybe the newer music with lockes imagine a chase scene where Kelly gets shot in the foot and they have to carry her the dramatic halo music we all know is playing as we try to escape then it cuts to lockes view with the newer style triumphient music
You can hear a different version of it in the background at the beginning of the video:
If the original theme isn’t returning, then perhaps a remix of it is? Maybe another theme will replace it, but you’ll be able to hear it in the campaign. I don’t know.
Also, the music at the end of the video (starts at 1:10) sounds phenomenal. There’s lots of emotion in it, and I think that if they put it in the game it will be one of the most memorable pieces in the soundtrack.
Cheers to (hopefully) the best soundtrack of the year.
