people are totally overreacting to this. there is definitely a big disparity between how much people think they would use split screen campaign coop, and how often it actually happens. I’m sure 343 has some numbers on this from previous games/the surverys they are running and if it was actually that big of a factor, they would have found a way to make it work.

Frankie said its not just a simple matter of turning the framerate down to 30 fps. Turning it down does other things to the engine that -Yoink- up the experience for other reasons.

They have walked into a PR firestorm by not getting split-screen working, and they should totally have it in the game.
Wow. 280+ comments about there being no splitscreen in Halo 5 in this article, and counting. Most of them are in agreement that it’s a terrible decision. 343 needs to address this in a serious way before they make a huge mistake.

What about those who share an Xbox One with a sibling? I use split screen a lot because I play with my brother a lot, 2 of my friends have brothers who use split screen all the time. Do we just leave them in the dust," sorry, if you want to play with your brother who is in the same room as you, you will have to buy another $400 console and $60 game".

Thanks for being level headed about it – truly. I will say this, though. There’s no way 343 could collect accurate metrics of split-screen usage, because so many people who use it are doing so because they’re not connected online! You can’t collect data from a family of 4 playing Halo in their living room on one console with no internet.
That being said, whatever metrics they do manage to drum up will be additionally flawed, for this reason: it was 343i’s own poor implementation of split-screen with H4 and H2A (inconsistent framerate, virtually no LAN support) that has caused it to be used less often in the first place. They can’t honestly cite lower usage, because their own poor development is what led to that! Circular logic.

Nope. It’s matter of play or not to play for many of us. For a video game it’s a matter of life and death.
Like I said split screen is needed just like backseats in my car: even if I don’t use it very often (actually I use split screen much more often than backseats…), it should be there because, when it’s needed, it’s needed. Nobody with family will buy a sports car (these usually have 2 usable seats) - game is investment too and most of us have families (if not siblings and parents, then woman and kids).

It’s never easy, but it’s their job to do it. They cannot lose more of Halo’s fanbase because of pure lazyness. Microsoft already did enough with Xbox One failure 2 years ago.

It’s their job to make a game as good as possible and to make the judgement call if implementing a feature would be a detriment to that. It’s not lazyness, it could be just not technically possible no matter how much people scream and throw their toys out the pram

Halo without split screen is not good and if they thought so, they made poor judgement. This thread is proof of that.
I’ll also quote myself, in case you’ve missed it (which is probable with so dynamic topic):
> Problem with split screen is purely on GPU: it must render 2-4 as many scenes. First of all graphic engine is scalable: it chooses models with right level of detail (all 3d models in game have several of these, from most detailed to least detailed) and right mipmap (texture resolution) to suit desired framerate and screen resolution. That means split screen is possible anytime, but means developers must spend 2 to 4 more time on balancing details to framerate while they are making maps, sections of campaign levels etc. That extra work pays off for single screen people because they always have best details with best framerate. 343i was regulary blewing that part and that’s why sometimes you have ugly level of details with unbearable framerate (even on single screen).

> Let’s look at Complex map in Halo 4. It has the same geometry and textures as Galileo Base in Spartan Ops. Why Complex has frame rate issues even with 2 player split screen, while Galileo Base is quite smooth, even with tons of enemies led by a.i.? Because Galileo Base is polished, re-compiled version of Complex, that was released few weeks later. For the same reason patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity was more than 5gb (because it included polished, re-compiled version of older map), and patch for Borderlands Pre-Sequel (that was released 2 months after game’s release) was almost 10gb (as it was basically entire game polished after 2 extra months of work).
>
> With some extra time they are able not only to release split screen for any mode in Halo 5, but also to make it work smoothly. That’s what we are asking right now: more polished games, even if it takes few more weeks/months to make them. They can even add this as a patch later (as there are several cases in history when split screen was added with update to released game), if they have to catch with release date.

> But they MUST do it.
Did I just see split-screen being compared to backseats of a car? That’s hilarious. I’m pretty sure buying a second console and TV for a second player is much more viable than buying a second car just for my underage children to drive. Necessities vs. niceties.
The splitscreen outrage is much ado about nothing. Splitscreen is being left in the last generation. This isn’t about lazy design, or doing something better…in a world of finite resources, where dedication to one thing requires sacrifice of another, I can live with that sacrifice. Many can as well.
I know it may be difficult to put in 4 player splitscreen, but at least do 2 player. Splitscreen is the way halo has always been and if 343 removes that then they are removing a piece from halos core and that is not okay.
My main concern is that we can at least play local split-screen co-op with forge maps, because that’s what we do most.
I’ve played every Halo game using local co-op. My best friend and I enjoy the story and playing the levels together. Without that feature, there is no point in getting the game if I’m honest. Say what you want about “gamer entitlement” or whining or what have you. If a product isn’t offering you what you want, the developer is not entitled to my loyalty. I buy these games to play them with my best friend. He can’t afford a new console right now and even if he could, it’s just not as much fun to play the campaign online with miles between us. You can’t hi-five your buddy when he’s in another zip code.
So no, I’m not entitled to have split screen co-op in my campaign. But it is the reason I’ve played these games for almost 15 years and if that’s no longer the product they want to make, then it’s also no longer the product I want to buy. Shame really. Halo was always one of the pillars of my gaming hobby.
Maybe it’s for the best. Under the stewardship of 343, I haven’t been enjoying these games as much anyway. Since taking over they’ve removed FireFight, they added Promethean enemies which are not fun to fight, they promised more than they could deliver with Master Chief Collection, and now they’re taking away yet another feature that made Halo something different and fun in the marketplace. Each game takes us one step closer to being just like every other shooter.
That’s a damn shame. Halo was once a property that fostered creativity and a fun community. Now it may as well be an offshoot of Call of Duty. “Future Warfare”.

So your response to “it might not be technically possible” is to say “they must do it” Yeah because that’ll make it technically possible.
I’ve played Halo without split screen so it not being an option doesn’t make it less good, just means it isn’t an option anymore.
Think I’ll favorite this thread for reference in the event of a) Split screen not being put in and see all the people who said they’d boycott it playing it or b) it being put in and watching all those who screamed for it complain that the game is suffering as a result.

And many can’t. The “necessities vs. niceties” argument can be thrown out the windows, because everything in video games in “niceties”. You don’t have to play Halo to survive. I see your point, however, and have to wonder: would perspective would be different if it were a different feature 343 was dropping from Halo? A feature that you personally use and believe to be a core Halo feature? Certainly the speaking out wouldn’t seem so dumb then.
Well Josh Holmes said it first, and Ill say it again. If you dont want to play the game, dont buy it. They arent making the game for people who wont play it. They are making it for people who are.
its a shame when my and a pal can run through 5 halo games in mcc but then cannot do the same in halo 5.
pretty sad 343
if the graphics aren’t amazing it wasn’t worth it at all

No. My answer is “it’s technically possible and they must do it”. If they say that it’s not technically possible, it basically means “time invested in that work will not be profitable”, which is unacceptable for gamers, as they are those, who are paying for that work. With rest of your post I see you’re just a troll, so I think I’ll ignore you from now on. Good day to you.
It seems a lot of games this generation and a few last generation; have concentrated so heavily on providing an out of this world experience that they have forgotten the fun you can have with a few mates and some tinnies. RIP Big Bang - Style Halo Nights!

See your point, but shouldn’t they make the game for all halo fans without casting people aside, because many of us are feeling ignored right now

I agree with you 100%
A 14year old tradition that I, my brother and oldest friend had was playing Halo splitscreen. Splitscreen campaign is for me what Halo is all about! Thats the advantage it had over other simular titles.I don’t care if the FPS is closer to 30 in splitscreen and if the edge smothing and whatnot is not excellent, I just want to be able to enjoy Halo as I have been doing since 2001.
