> Welcome to the Official Splitscreen Thread.
> (Please make yourself at home.)
>
> We’ve all heard the news: Halo 5 won’t support 4 player split screen, according to multiple tweets from Josh Holmes. We have to take Holmes’ words seriously because he’s the creative director for Halo 5, meaning that he makes those kinds of decisions.
>
> As an individual who uses 4 player split screen often, this decision is extremely disappointing; it’s a shame because I loved the beta. The fact is, Halo 5’s lack of splitscreen support discourages me from buying it, and might prevent me from buying it. I certainty won’t pre-order it.
>
> Here’s the deal: if 343 wants our support, their going to have to reconsider this decision.
>
> Reasons to support 4 player splitscreen:
> - 343 will get my money How will they get money by allowing more people to play the same game, they would lose money instead.
> - Splitscreen is one of the few advantages that console gaming has over PC Doesn’t mean it should be supported.
> - Halo 5 will have a feature that its competition lacks They don’t need it to be different.
> - LAN parties will once again prosper You can still have more xboxs and pay that way.
> - The social lives of gamers will flourish By allowing the same few people to play with each other? They would be more social if they were forced to be online and talk/interact with more people. In a multiscreen they don’t need a mic, causing them to talk to only themselves.
> - Every single Halo FPS has featured 4 player splitscreen Not a good enough reason.
> - Not including it for performance reasons makes the Xbox One seem like an inferior console Uh, no? It makes us have 60FPS without it, I’m fine with it being gone.
> - From a logical standpoint, it doesn’t make sense to remove splitscreen on next gen hardware …Wut? Logical standpoint? It makes no logical reason to put it in for the few people who want it, and to dumb down the 60fps because of a few people.
> - Splitscreen was one of the major reasons that allowed Halo Combat Evolved to be successful No. It was a different kind of game. Yes, it helped, but it is already a major series, it’ll be fine on it’s own.
> - Halo night will live on It still does.
> - Including split screen due to consumer backlash can help improve 343’s abysmal public relation reputation Nope.
> - The lack of 4 player split screen could be considered a design flaw No, they TOLD you it wasn’t going to be there.
> - A considerable amount of split screen users are willing to sacrifice graphics for performance Where is your factual reference for this? Because I wouldn’t want to sacrifice graphics for split screen.
> - Single player graphics won’t be effected by split screen optimizations Where is your factual reference for this?
> - Removing it makes the game less flexible You trying to force them into adding it, isn’t being less flexible?
> - Splitscreen is a great way to advertise the game to friends, making them likely to buy it after playing it on your Xbox No, it wouldn’t. They would be more likely to just use their friends.
> - 1v1 multiplayer isn’t a particularly memorable experience Go. Online. That’s the entire point of multiplayer.
> Todo List for Optimizing Splitscreen
> - Lock the split screen frame rate at 30 FPS to provide a consistent experience and allow the user’s brain to adapt No. Don’t dumb down the FPS for the addition of multiscreen.
> - Disable anti aliasing, anistereopic filtering, depth of field, FXAA and dynamic lighting on split screen …If they are in multiplayer online, how is this not going to affect the game play?
> - Reduce/remove particles, mist/smoke effects, decals, and shaders on split screen
> - * Important: Use reduced-polygon meshes on split screen. Most 3D modeling programs have a plugin that will do this. Again, how is this not going to affect the game play?
> - Reduce the render distance but don’t go crazy on it. We should be able to spot other players across the map. (Geometry can simplify, but make sure that players are distinguishable.) They shouldn’t have to dumb down anything to make your splitscreen available.
> - Use low-res textures on split screen but make that they aren’t loaded at runtime. Seriously, why would you want this much performance reduction just to play with 3 friends instead of 1? GO ONLINE.
> Raising Awareness for Splitscreen
> The developers at 343 don’t browse these forums on a regular basis, and frankly, I don’t blame them. The problem is, they won’t see this thread. In order to effectively convince 343, we need to use social media to contact them. I’m GLAD they won’t see this. It’s not necessary.

Machinima making a show shouldn’t determine the fate of the entire population of Halo 5. Just like a small number of players who will only buy a single copy of Halo 5 to play 4 people on, should determine the fate of the entire population of Halo 5.
What if people like myself boycotted Halo if they added in splitscreen? I can guarantee that if the numbers switched, the numbers that didn’t want it to affect their FPS would be much higher than those who would sacrifice. (Opinion, I have no proof)

I have no doubt you would win but why would you want to do that? The game becomes less flexible and are you sure you will never have a need for split screen? I don’t care for infection playlist but does that mean I want them to remove it? No, I understand some people like it and why shouldn’t they have what they want as long as I get my rumble pit and team slayer. You might not use split screen but can’t you see why some people would? Hopefully 343 keeps them game apealing to the most people possible and keeps the community alive.

That, and some people need split screen because they own an Xbox with a someone, this one console per person mentality is stupid.

It’s indeed one of the things that have made Halo stand out from the others.
It’s just so fun to play with your friends compared to its competitors.
This is a feature I will continue to advocate for until 343i responds to this issue.
Until then, I will keep asking 343i if they may reverse their decision,
although its admittedly a long shot…

> Makes me wonder what data they are using. Halo 4 had poor 4 player split screen support. I used to blame my ISP for lagging all the time but I loaded up halo reach one day and noticed that 4 player split screen worked great. After a few more tries with halo 4 I stopped playing 4 completely and went back to reach at least for split screen games. If they are going by halo 4 numbers I’m sure split screen playing went down because of the poor implementation. Then there are those that never even connect their xbox to the internet. I’m sure there is a higher number of those players using split screen because of the lack of xbox live. Believe it or not I know a couple people that do this. I know its probably not easy, the easy thing would be to completely remove split screen so I am glad they decided to at least support 2 player split screen but I really wish they would go the extra mile. That is what I always loved about Halo. In my opinion it always seems like they payed attention to the little details and always delivered the most flexible polished FPS out there.
I haven’t had this problem of 4player split screen lagging in H4. Additionally, 4 player split screen is most often used in LAN environments in my personal experience.
“I haven’t had this problem of 4player split screen lagging in H4. Additionally, 4 player split screen is most often used in LAN environments in my personal experience.”
Well that is good to hear. Maybe I will give it another try. The issue is worst for me playing 4 player split screen on xbox live in Forge maps. The built in maps arent so bad. I think it is frame drop but it manifests as this strange choppy motion. I have not had this issue in reach. It seems I am not the only one. If you do a search for Halo 4 split screen lag others have the same issue. Here is just one example https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/forums/d76f090378914a9bb85312f87cf09b99/topics/multiplayer---splitscreen-lag/c1ffdc4f-ab17-4a80-aa44-fd0d4468eb85/posts
It actually doesn’t bother me at all whether it’s four or two-player splitscreen, since I don’t use it anymore.

Max2107 or any other players don’t use split screen any more, would you mind commenting why you stopped using it? I am just curious. I don’t use it all the time anymore but when I can I still drag friends or family over to use it from time to time and it is still in my opinion one of the most fun ways to play.

I can tell you why I no longer use it. Because I have online. I used to have to grab my father, brothers, and even my now stepbrothers to play Halo: CE. I would have 4 people total, and the first time I got a killtacular, I went nuts.
But, now that they have online (ever since Halo 2), I have played online constantly. I rarely get teams together, because I like the solo route. I have a few friends that I can count on to play, well, and I like to play with them on occasion. But, I would rather play solo. VERY rarely have I played a LAN party, and to me, it just wasn’t nearly as fun. I liked the different people. I liked the inability to screenwatch. I liked the multitude of challenges to arise.
If you need splitscreen to stay with Halo, then I would rather you leave the Halo community. If something like this can steer you away, or make you boycott this wonderful franchise, than you were never a true fan to begin with.
I love Halo. I have played it for over a decade. I will continue to stay with it. I will give my opinions where I can, but I will never threaten the advancement of Halo if they don’t listen to me. I will never boycott what I love.
Long. Live. Halo. <3

Thanks for sharing. I have to ask do you think you would have enjoyed halo CE as much if it didn’t have 4 player split screen? I get what you are saying about playing different people, and the multitude of challenges. That is my favorite part about xbox live but I still enjoy the social side of playing locally. I feel I get the best of both playing 4pss online. I have to disagree with you and think you are being unfair in saying we split screeners should leave the community. We have been part of the community since the beginning. I have been playing 4pss online before xbox live even existed with Halo CE and the old xbconnect app. Why should we have to leave? Also losing players 3 or 4 at a time does not sound like a good way to keep the community lively. I don’t think everyone in this thread plans to boycott either. Those of us who use split screen also love halo. We would have not taken the time to comment or be so passionate about this issue if we didn’t. I don’t think removing useful features is advancing but going backwards. It is not a threat. With out 4pss and having only 2pss halo 5 multiplayer is half as useful to me. I don’t want to boycott but if halo 5 does not have 4pss I will just stick to the older versions. Long live Halo!

I think you fail to realize, despite all these threads, that there are people who are the exact opposite.
Or also enjoy splitscreen just as much, or perhaps more so, than solo queuing in matchmaking.
But try to understand it from our view point…
And while it’s great that you find playing Halo online quite a lot…
What if that was to go away? Or become very limited?
Now do you understand why we bother to do these discussions?
Your preferred way of playing Halo multiplayer is not going away and is not at risk of going away… whereas ours is.
You can easily tell us “Just go play online…” and while we can do that… many of us don’t like to.
Because we like to get teams together. Because we like the team route.
Because we have friends we can count on to play with and we’d rather play together.
We’ve played LAN parties or local sessions and they were a blast each time.

I don’t truly think anyone will forgo a purchase of Halo 5 due to a lack of 4PSS.
And if anyone has said so, they’re most likely exaggerating because they’re bummed that one of the Halo series long time features will not be in Halo 5.
We too love Halo and have played it for a long time as well.
I can’t speak for everyone, but with or without 4PSS, I too will continue to stay with it.
But just because I love Halo does not mean I will not advocate features I’ve found to be essential to my Halo experience.
For without 4PSS support… there is little use to the multiplayer side of the game for me. That’s a large chunk of content in the game that won’t be as fun as it could have been for me to play, as I doubt I’ll bother with match making… And if I do bother, it probably won’t last long, just like every other game.
Long Live Halo… but also, Long Live Social Gaming (And I don’t mean social by the use of networks.)

Quit being a -Yoink-. This is an actual important issue unlike sprint. Nobody is saying to boycott the game, but wanting a feature in the game is not something that should be fought. Just because you wish to play exclusively online doesn’t mean others do as well.

> Nobody is saying to boycott the game, but wanting a feature in the game is not something that should be fought.
You can’t just not invite arguments against what we propose.
And while Tenkay/UrJesusDiedLmao sure does rub people in the wrong way…
We kind of need the arguments against us. Perhaps not the way he presents them, but…
In order to convince those who are not affected by any of this that what we propose should be in the game,
we have to address as to why it should be so.
That is the point of a discussion afterall, otherwise, its just constant agreement.
So this is something that should be fought, but we fight to have it implemented.
Even blops 3 will have 4 player splitscreen.

I support 4 player split-screen, I used to do that w/ my family on Halo 3, it was a really fun experience. If there’s no 4 player split-screen, there will be less people playing the game & it’ll be less populated.

Glad someone else thinks so.
The fight isn’t over so long as we keep the battle going.
We might lose Halo 5, but we won’t necessarily lose the battles after that.
Keep it on-going, my fellow Split Screen players. The future of Halo night is at stake.

I agree with the both of you. We must keep fighting for 4 player split screen. Halo night surviving could quite possibly depend on it.
