> Words of wisdom. I mean, on Regret, the framerate dropped CONSTANTLY, and the game didn’t break. No, not a single thing happened, aside from my usual annoyance with the framerate drops. I tell ya, this “simulation built around 60 fps” thing is bogus. Pure bogus. It’s more than likely just 343 covering up Microsoft’s 60 FPS at all times requirement that we believe they mandated. Can’t screw over your publisher, so why not just screw over your programmers? It’s a win win!
I’m not a programmer, but everything I’ve said is something that the community engineers have said before. Perhaps the game doesn’t crash. Perhaps the framerate drops horribly for everybody. Or perhaps there was no way to optimize 60fps for launch and that they couldn’t lock any stable framerate at all (it would be impossible to play the game if they couldn’t even lock it at 30fps for splitscreen). I know that H2A multiplayer, a game built for splitscreen while running at 60fps also has framerate drops for no good reason on several different maps and parts of maps. This was especially evident in splitscreen where it would get even worse even with 2 player splitscreen.

The simulation is like the engine under the hood of your car. 60 frames per second is what the engine is built to work with from the ground up. If the game drops too far away from 60fps then the game simply cannot work. Probably would crash or something worse. It would affect how the game plays. Instead of you just experiencing a miserable experience at 30fps with splitscreen it is likely that you would start moving more slowly through the game world, weapon fire might move more slowly and jumps might take forever to fall back down to the ground. You literally could not play the game in that state because it would be even more broken than the Master Chief Collection and it would likely require them to either delay the game or pull an MCC and release it and then patch it continuously until it actually works.

I mean by all means unleash your disappointment and continue to spread the word that we want this feature really badly since you never know they may be able to add splitscreen in the future. But this has become a deterrent itself to not buy the game for many people. Judging from my friends at least, most of us play online but we prefer playing Halo on splitscreen. Online we get through 2 or 3 matches and get bored just because it doesn’t feel the same. I suppose in that respect, profits are going to be cut into. They shouldn’t have set us up to expect both, they should have provided both, now again you have a rather major controversy following MCC and also already indicating that this game is starting to fail or for some at least raise red flags. It is a big shame because they were really really doing well with hype and everything. Considering some of my friends were relying on splitscreen, since that is primarily what they played Halo for in Halo 1, 2, 3, odst, reach and 4.
>
> I just can’t think for the life of me why other games can manage it, why other games even keep it separate from single player and online multiplayer, but how does a separate feature break the base game. Like if they introduce splitscreen does than mean the single player breaks too? It is like 343 set this up thinking it would work without a hitch but because they became reliant on their own set up they consequently broke feature fan were hoping for. Well in the case of splitscreen it SHOULD have been a given, so much so it was initially confirmed to outright support it. Maybe those who want splitscreen have to wait until Halo 6 to get the game they wanted and hoped for.
Those games were obviously built differently. The Frostbite engine seems like one of the most advanced out there and it doesn’t have to focus on huge online battles with its splitscreen which is limited to certain maps and modes all of which are offline or 2 player coop based. Call of Duty doesn’t have too much it has to do. All maps and campaign modes are static or scripted environments that don’t require special effects and in the multiplayer the only dynamic thing that really needs to be rendered is shadows of players.
Point is this is Halo and they just couldn’t do it.
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the beta was running on lower graphics and lower FPS, and it ran just fine. I don’t see how they can’t achieve this for split screen. Hell, I am all for 343 to delay the game for this fundamental feature and for other fixes. in the end it will lead to a better game.
I do not buy the technical argument without specific detail from 343. EA said for months that offline SimCity wasn’t technically feasible but had to backtrack due to massive community backlash and made an offline version, killing their credibility to the point that Maxis is now closed.
343 should view that massive SNAFU as a learning experience and not make the same mistake.
I voted! Others should to. While I think that the reasons that they’ve given are completely valid if they can patch it in at a later date then that NEEDS to happen. Before elites, before PVE Warzone, it should be the first thing they should work on beyond the already planned DLC. If it is possible it needs to happen.
sigh 343 just add a -Yoink- 30fps lock! that -Yoinking!- easy Old halos had 15fps splitscreen with no AA and -Yoink- textures and no effects and yet Nobody complained!
just do that split screen gamers don’t give a -Yoink- about framerate or Visuals!
if backwards compatibility can be achieved on the Xbox one, then 343 and Microsoft can somehow include split screen coop, no matter the compromises (30fps…) please make it happen!

If you’d like to donate, I’d speculate that halo 5 would cost 100-150 million dollars (halo 4 cost 100 million), if you can fund raise that to change everything, good on ya. Your not just going to have to pay for artists to change a cutscene. But for there to be a change in the engine itself and all the assets currently created. Not to mention I wouldn’t expect a 2015 release of the game either

> You do realize that isn’t going to happen though, right? Halo 5 is going to do just fine.
> Splitscreen is an awesome feature and we’re all in mourning, but not a lot of people use it. You can point to this massive thread as evidence of it’s popularity but just because there’s enough people to keep a thread like this going for as long as it has doesn’t mean there’s enough people to make 343 reverse course.
> Even if you got 2,000 people to swear that they will not buy this game if it launches without splitscreen that is a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the total number of people that will buy the game.
> What can be done? For Halo 5: nothing. It will not have splitscreen. Nothing anyone here does will change that.
> **But…**Keep this thread alive. We all know that a console towards the end of it’s generation is capable of so much more than when it debuted. I think it’s very possible that splitscreen could return for Halo 6.
Gosh you are wise - I wish I could see into the future like that. How can you deny that if enough people don’t like a game then it won’t recoup its development cost. Its a pretty simple concept.
If Halo 5 flops, its hard to see Halo 6 regaining its glory - the franchise is losing alot of loyalty with recent decisions and quality of releases. 343’s omission of splitscreen feels like a giant middle finger saying our vision doesn’t include the likes of you. Halo is no longer an innovator, it is far less accessible and far less social, the xbox one is tanking everywhere outside the USA; the last halo movie was an absolute tragedy (in quality, not theme), the last game in the series had serious technical issues. The only people that can play halo now are xbox one owners, not their friends - and in places where xbox one ownership is low this is a huge deal.
I’ll be honest, I’m considering canceling my preorder now. No split screen for co-op hurt a lot, but no split screen at all pretty much ruins the game for me. I definitely played more in split screen with friends than alone or online. And I have very fond memories of Halo LAN parties that can never happen again. Let’s face it, you guys really blew it by deciding to focus on the wrong things for this game. You said “343’s focus is to ensure that fans get the best Halo experience yet” but how do you intend to do that by removing one of the most important features of the game? It can’t be the best experience yet without co-op. It just can’t.

Wow - so Halo five is not even going to have half the console base that halo 3 had, and its limited to single player only, and… at a time when console sales are atrocious outside the USA? This really is going to be the worst performing Halo yet. 15 year old american boys might like top graphics at the cost of everything else, but thats not going to sell games anywhere else on a platform that is performing badly in other markets. If you have 10 friends that play console games, and you’re the only one with an xbox, Halo five is going to be freaking anti-social - that is an incredibly bitter pill to swallow if you’ve loved the social aspects of the previous games.
Thinking about this further, I don’t think microsoft has played any part in the decision to push fidelity over gameplay, I think this is 343’s doing themselves. There is no-way Microsoft would want to put restrictions like this on their flagship title when sales are so poor in most parts of the world. This decision won’t sell consoles in Europe, Asia and Australia\New Zealand where market penetration is low already, and its most likely not going to sell more consoles in North America anyway given most die-hard Halo fanboys already have a console.

we know that 343 to launch flagship 1080p 60fps but we hope to communicate the implementation coop split screen, later releasing an update.
I trust in 343 Directory to implement this mode (split coop even more low resolution and frame rate) better graphics, slightly worse than a mode in less coma split coop that was the innovation of halo combat evolved back in 2001.
With 343, my hope will not die.

It’s obvious from the tone of his text that they took the removal of splitscreen very seriously and still are, and are feeling just as bad as fans about it too. I’d be willing to bet it was Microsoft from the very beginning that was pushing them and pushing them to make 60fps the priority above all else - so they did what their bosses told them to do, while trying to still keep splitscreen or obviously they wouldn’t have talked about having plans for it months ago. However in the end the new engine they built couldn’t meet the big-wig’s performance specifications and release date with splitscreen, and so it had to be cut (with potential for a post-launch update). But now they’re committed to making the single-screen experience absolutely worth it. The people who work at 343i certainly don’t hate Halo, and don’t just ignore the desires of the series’ fans, but in the end they are still subject to certain demands set forth by their publisher. People on here can express their disappointment, refuse to buy the game, or whatever else because that’s their right as the consumer. But dooming the franchise as a whole and accusing the developers of “killing” something they’re working day-in and day-out to bring to the public at the best quality possible is just downright unreasonable and immature. As I’ve said before, if so many people think making a AAA FPS with every single feature they could possibly want is so easy, then go ahead and go out and do it yourself.

omg, this game is worst in every next info about it… i still don’t see the point why they need to remove split screen? i don’t believe that trivial explanation like 60 fps is the only reason i just dont get it

Splitscreen would be a very welcomed feature to stay, not just return. Halo has been one of the shining few games that reveled in its multiplayer - both online and off.
So, can we get an official features thread in general? People ask for such things as clans and the threads are locked without reason by disingenuous moderators. It’s really quite off putting considering that any attempt at a discussion on the topic has been censored.

Because in long run, there are no 2 sides of the situation. We’re waiting for Halo game and we’ll be paying 60euro for Halo game, not 343i’s excuses of why they’ll fail to deliver. It was 343i fault to chose certain technology without even thinking if that technology allows them to create sterling Halo game. They had all the signs that split screen is causing them trouble, not just with Halo 4, but MCC as well, but instead of improving things in this matter, they chose to implement it to Halo 5 very late in developing cycle - TOO late that is (for their own schedule). They’ve failed miserably and it’s their job to fix their mistakes.
They still have few months - time that’s enough for other AAA developers to fix framerate-related issues (AC:Unity, Borderlands Pre-Sequel etc.).
If theres no splitscreen, its a rental for me. Only reasons i buy n keep games, is to play them many times with friends n familly in splitscreen. Plz bring back splitscreen, u are our only last hope !
This is crap 343… no split-screen? I don’t give a hoot about 60 fps… your damn 60fps can go jump off a cliff… if you remove that critical feature it will die a slow and painful death. it will be like removing the heart of all that is fun about halo and hoping it can keep breathing. I came into the gaming world with this game and have grown to absolute love it with your last release why did you have to ruin it for me and countless others.

This is exactly what I’ve been trying to tell the fanboys on here that think Halo 5 will sell 6-8 (and in one deluded case case, 10) million copies.
