And this is the problem with the Wii U. It is a crappy system that does not appeal to the western markert (where consoles matter the most), that doesn’t have any good third party titles (because the console is unappealing), and the most stupid move of all is Nintendo’s stupidity with their own first party and second party titles. They have a treasure trove of titles they could sell the console if they made them. Metroid, Star Fox, Star Tropics, F-Zero (which could really use a sequel), etc. But they release Mario and DK which has the same audience more or less. They appeal strictly to a single audience and they suffer for it. They could be fine if they had titles that actually -Yoinking!- mattered. But they all get shipped to the Xbone and PS4 and release on Wii U a few months later if they are lucky.
But yet they are able to perform wonderfully with the 3DS. Why? Because it appealed to Japan (where handhelds matter). That got it off the ground so that 3rd party developers would come on in. And Nintendo touched on Fire Emblem and made a killing with an old IP. But somehow this way of thinking doesn’t translate to the console department where every few months is the game that will “save the Wii U”. Mario Kart won’t do -Yoink- and Austin’s comment makes me skeptical that Smash Bros won’t do -Yoink-. He is a casual Nintendo player from what I understand and if this is what casual Nintendo players think, then Nintendo is just going to piss this generation away.
Wii U doesn’t appeal to any market whatsoever and Nintendo is sorta just -Yoink!- away in the wind. They can learn from this and next gen invest in the third party developers, but the “third pillar” investment tells me otherwise. I hate Iwata.
