I have a lot of suggestions, me and my friends often discuss what could be improved. For this post I’ll stick to one topic: Forge.
First of all, the basic engine used for Forge in Halo: Reach is excellent. It’s robust and versatile, given the right pieces and the right spaces you can make anything. The problem is that we aren’t given the right pieces or spaces.
The Pieces
I’m sure you’ve heard the complaints about all Forge World maps being “gray and dull.” Not a huge deal for me, it’s about how the map plays more than how it looks (plus all the Halo: CE maps were just as bad as far as grayness and dullness). Nevertheless, why not try to satisfy some complaints if no one would be appalled by the change?
The way I see it the “gray problem” has three solutions.
1: Extra Forge Worlds with different themes.
2: Make changing the color of an object affect a significant portion of the object.
3: One Forge World with a variety of object themes.
Personally I like 3 the most. What I’d like to see is every object have different themes to select from as an object property. For example say you’re holding a Tower, 2-story like we have in Halo: Reach, you go into the object properties and change the theme from its current “Forerunner Metal” to “Covenant.” Presto, you now are holding a Covenant version of the Tower, 2-story in all its rounded purple glory. I don’t mean for these different versions to be geometrically identical, just similar.
By the way, the different themes I’m envisioning are Covenant, Forerunner Metal, Forerunner Stone, Flood Forerunner (basically Flood infested Forerunner Metal), Flood Covenant, UNSC Old (concrete and rusted metal, similar to Rat’s Nest from Halo 3), UNSC New (clean metal, similar to Orbital from Halo 3).
On to other topics: Natural Structures. In my opinion the biggest weakness of Forge World is it’s rather limited ability to create large outdoor maps. This is largely a “spaces” issue but the ability to place Forge hills would help quite a bit. By a hill I basically mean a structure that when phased blends smoothly with the ground so that vehicles and drive over them easily. The central hill on Valhalla is a prime example of what I’m asking for. If I could put that in the Canyon on Forge World I would be very happy.
As you know, many structures in Forge are asymmetrical. A very useful feature when designing maps with these objects would be to have mirrored versions as well.
One final note. I’d like to see maps not specifically designed for Forging still have some selection of structures to place. Nothing fancy, just some blocks, walls, and walkways. For example it could be useful to be able to block off an entrance to the BFG on Spire or make a ramp up to one of the large rocks.
Spaces
Not much to say about spaces really but I do have a few suggestions.
You know the Island in Reach’s Forge World? It would be really great if that actually was surrounded on all sides by deep water. Those sandbars could be a “natural structure” that one could place or remove.
It would be great to have a valley area to forge on, similar to Sandtrap or Standoff.
It would also be really great to have a large, circular, and most importantly flat plateau to forge on. A big issue with Reach’s Forge World is that all the outdoor areas are cluttered with hills, rocks, and trees. Again, letting forgers put down their own hills would be really great.
Miscellaneous
More than 2 lights please.
Weather effects maybe?
Different gravity areas. So that forgers can create low gravity sections and large-scale gravlifts.
One-way shield doors that you don’t bounce off of would be appreciated.
Gates with switches would be nice too.
You know that bug in which shots from a Gauss turret go through Forge structures? Please fix that.
