(This was a thread I made.)
Let me start by saying that Halo’s 1-3 had the highest, and most consistent populations out of all Halo games. More people bought Halo 3 than Reach, and more people played Halo 3 than Reach, and for longer. The reason?
Halo is pretty much the only console FPS that even has a hint of competition built into it. This right here is why its MP is loved by so many. Competitive players really have nowhere else to go, which works out just as well because Halo is pretty much the perfect console shooter.
Reach stepped away from that competitiveness quite a bit. In fact, had they made any more changes, it would barely be recognizable as a Halo game anymore. What with Bloom, AAs, Assassinations, slow movement, low jump height, Credits, bland art, and the failure of a ranked playlist known as The Arena, which judged you based on solely your K/D, Reach was a failure from a competitive standpoint. This is my opinion, but I’ve been around long enough to know what Halo should feel like.
So did many others apparently, because Reach’s gimmick filled, noob-friendly gameplay drove away over 80% of the original launch day population. Reach had roughly 1 million players on release day, and today, less than a year later, it only has about 200K at peak times. Halo 3 still had about 70% of its original population after a little less than a year, so we can conclude that competitive with a large skill gap = good. It leaves room for improvement for everybody, and extends the game’s life span by years. You can argue that Reach had competition, but really it didn’t. It was basically Reach vs Black Ops, as that was the only other huge FPS that came out around that time. Halo 3 was up against CoD 4, W@W, MW2, Black Ops, Reach, and truckloads of other FPS along the way, and it still puts up 30,000 players per day.
Many people here say, “AAs can work if done properly,” or, “Bloom just needs a tweak,” but the reality of the situation is that the ONLY way to bring ALL of Halo’s population back is to get rid of all of Reach’s gimmicks entirely. Guys, if you want Halo to be king again, we need to get it back to its roots and build from THERE.
343i, PLEASE do not kill Halo by building from the most unsuccessful title in the franchise. Halo ended with a fairly good reputation, but please don’t try to resurrect it with a Reach v2 and ruin Halo for many loyal fans. PLEASE 343i, acknowledge us competitive players who were punished by Reach. Return Halo to the king of console FPS.
