SOCIAL:
This playlist category is meant for creative freedom and casual play. Gametypes will vary greatly, but be aimed at a more casual audience than a core audience. Gametypes can feature Armor Abilities, Bloom, Vehicles, and longer kill times (If 343 chooses).
Whereas the above playlist categories have been designed with the competitive community in mind (And adhering to their strict, hyper-competitive gameplay style), this playlist category is for the casual, and for 343 to go nuts and do whatever they want with. They can (And probably should, for variety’s sake) include Bloom, Armor Abilities, Vehicles, and even slower kill times, should they choose. This is 343’s version of Halo that they wanted to take creative chances with.
Credit earnings in this category will be variable, but will feature no bonuses or inflation. It will be much like Reach is today for all playlists.
In addition, there should be NO duplicate playlists, such as “Social Slayer” that is just 4v4 slayer with different gametypes. If someone wants the 4v4 Slayer experience (For example), they must play either Core or Arena. Social is for the different experiences, not to duplicate what Ranked and Core are trying to do, but in a social setting.
Players will be matched randomly, with parties being matched with parties as long as other parties are available.
To help streamline the experience, here are a few playlists that MUST be included:
-Squad Slayer (5v5): Huge variety of Slayer gametypes, from the AA/Bloom slayer experience to the “Core” experience. Low weighting on Arena Slayer.
-Big Team Battle (8v8): Big Team Games! Need I really say more? 50/50 weighting on gametypes that are more “Core” and gametypes that are more…“Reach-y” =P.
-Invasion (8v8): The only reason I mention Invasion is that it needs to be upped to 8v8. It’s a fantastic gametype that 343 should take many creative freedoms with.
-Grab Bag (6v6): Any and all basic game modes, such as Slayer, CTF, Oddball etc. Nothing like Grifball or Invasion, though. Just basic gametypes…But all of them =). Low weight on “Core” and “Arena” gametypes.
Whew! That took a long time to get through. I’d like to get feedback from you guys, so please leave a comment!
Anyway, lets get some questions out of the way before some of you comment, and I have to explain myself, then I have to edit the OP:
Q: What makes you the expert? Why should I give a grunts left nut what you have to say?
A: Valid question. Well, while I’m certainly no game design expert, I’ve been playing Halo for YEARS, and I’m quite familiar with both the competitive and casual playerbase.
I also’d like to think I possess a great deal of common sense when it comes to problem solving. It’s one of my few good traits, along with being able to put my ideas down on paper better than most. I feel like I’ve crafted a fairly well-written, common-sense solution that combines the interests of the casual/social and the hardcore/hyper-competitive.
Q: Absolute Bumkis. Your playlist layout clearly puts priority on Competitive over Casual. The only way to gain rank is to play “Hyper-Competitively”. Why did you do this?! Explain yourself, you mentally incapacitated man-shrew!
A: Okay…But you didn’t have to be so harsh…
Anyways. The reason I put the “Core” experience as the ranked experience is because…Well…It’s always been that way! Ever since Halo 2, that streamlined, hardcore gameplay has become the preferred method of measuring skill among Halo players. Reach deviated from that path (To say the least), and I think it’s time to put competitive, ranked Halo back on track.
I’d also like to point out that my plan keeps the Reach “Military Rank” system in place. Players can play whatever they want and feel progress. But, if they want that feeling of prestige (And a sleek, metallic-plated Military Rank), they’ll have to “Stand and be Judged” as it were =P.
Q: What about what 343 wants to do with Halo? Why can’t their “Halo” be “Ranked Halo”?
A: Because competitive play in Halo is no longer about them. It’s about the community. Ranked Halo has moved beyond design decisions by game developers. It has (despite Bungie’s constant efforts to the contrary…) transcended the game developer world and has been plopped right into the middle of the community. The hardcore, hyper-competitive now have an expectation as to what “Ranked Halo” should be like. Rather than try to FORCE change upon them (Bungie…Reach…Current Arena Population…Need I say More?), 343 Industries should accept that “Ranked Halo” is what the community decides it should be, not what they at 343 deem it to be.
This attitude will not only improve the state of Halo 4’s Ranked Gameplay, but it will also improve 343’s standing with the community, proving that they are more open-minded than Bungie, and will take cues from the community at large.
Furthermore, 343 has done nothing to prove that they know how to build a Halo game yet. If they want to experiment with what is essentially, OUR franchise, then they can…In the Social category. But for Ranked gameplay? Stick with what works. They will be doing themselves a favor, frankly. They’ll be playing it safe, and guaranteeing that the status-quo will be upheld, regardless of any “mistakes” they might make in Social.
In other words, the core “Halo” audience will always have that familiar gameplay to fall back to if they don’t like 343’s changes to the Halo formula.
Not to say that the community might not like the new direction 343 is taking with the franchise. If their version proves more popular with that “Ranked Halo” demographic, then maybe in time, 343’s Halo can become the new Arena, or something. I don’t know.
That’s it. I know…Huge post. Thanks for reading
