THE OFFICIAL HALO FEEDBACK THREAD

============
MELEE

this is probably the most flawed system in halo reach. i can see where bungie was going with this, in making it so players didnt have to ‘guess’ when to melee, but this could have easily been done with a small flicker on the players armor instead.

in my opinion the halo 3 post-patch melee system makes the most sense. it functions as follows:

Shoot -> melee -> person who did a significant amount more damage wins.

in halo reach, on the other hand, the melee system sucks the viability of shooting out of some close combat situations involving at least 1 melee. because of this, the ever-so-popular sprint + double melee tactic works as follows:

1.) do i know what range in which shooting is viable? if yes, go to 2.), if no, go to 4.)
2.) is my target at the range in which i can shoot to have any positive effect on the outcome of the battle? if yes, go to 3.), if no, go to 4.)
3.) shoot -> melee (oh, and dont miss a single bullet, because you’ll probably go back into shooting doing nothing to help you again XD)
4.) dont shoot, wait till they are within melee range -> melee -> jump backwards -> headshot.

this is also assuming the player knows that, at some ranges, shooting simply WILL NOT HELP HIM/HER in the least. if the player does not know about this lost viability of shooting, the problem is compounded (and how would you remedy this problem? tell them ‘sorry, but sometimes you simply cant shoot to get ahead’?).

please revert to the bleedthru melee system. it is literally about a billion times more straight forward, and intuitive.

lastly,

ARMOR ABILITIES

in my opinion, AA’s are fine for halo provided that they are:
-balanced across the board
-ALL VIABLE at higher levels of play
-non-rage inducing (see: armor lock, jet pack, sprint, bubble)

breaking it down further, i’ll go into each AA, and what i could see changing for the better with reasoning why.

ARMOR LOCK - this armor ability is a pretty cool idea. the problem with it is that, at a 2 second max duration it does EVERYTHING it was intended to do (block a melee, block a rocket, block a grenade, etc.) without being BLATANTLY OVERPOWERED like it currently is. armor lock is currently, straight up, the most rage inducing thing to have EVER landed in a halo game, WIDELY hated by the VAST MAJORITY of the community. the reason its hated isnt because of its concept, its because of its implementation, i believe. if armor lock lasted only 2 seconds, or 3 seconds, and had a bit faster cooldown, it would NOT be so widely hated from the community. never in my life have i heard so many people straight up YELL into their mics ‘-insert obscenity-! ARMOR LOCK!’ change here is needed more than any other area.

SPRINT - the idea of sprint really shouldnt even be an AA. it should be default because it makes sense for it to be. the problem with sprint, however, is that if you are getting outplayed, or out shot, you can simply run away from danger. get down 1 shot in a DMR battle? -> run away. to fix this, make it so if a player is shot, he or she stops sprinting, and cannot sprint till 2 seconds after they have received ENEMY damage (so you cant just shoot your teammates to stop them from getting power weapons that you want). with this change, sprint does everything it was intended to do, increasing mobility, without giving players the option to simply run away at the slightest hint of danger.

JET PACK - jet pack is a pretty cool idea, dont get me wrong, but it simply does NOT have a place in non-joke playlists. in halos 1, 2, and 3, the concept of ‘map control’ has always been an important thing to strive for. with jet pack, a skilled player completely throws this concept out the window. currently, in the gametypes that it is featured in, you will see players constantly flying around. not only is this not fun for myself as a player, its also not fun for any of my friends from what ive heard either. when my friends want to play team slayer, they ask ‘wanna play some team jetpacks?’ because thats effectively what the playlist has boiled down into. halo with jet packs just seems extremely gimmicky, like it was made for children or something. this AA is fine as it is (maybe nerf the duration), but please DO NOT PUT THIS IN DEFAULT HALO, especially not in the NON-JOKE playlists.

(maybe make a smaller version of jet pack that works more as a ‘double jump’ than a constant epic fly-suit. this would be more acceptable, and would keep the concept of map control still in place, while breaking up problematic areas too.)

BUBBLE SHIELD - this is a pretty minor tweak, but the bubble needs to pop faster. it currently takes about a million bullets to pop a bubble, let alone 2 since more than 1 player can use it. it should not take a whopping 4 (your entire inventory) grenades to blow up a bubble shield. 3 i could see, but 4 is ridiculous. how about if you shoot the bubble with 2 entire clips from ANY weapon it will pop? seems more balanced, and less frustration - inducing. that, or MASSIVELY nerf the duration that the bubble lasts on the ground. something to nerf how effective this is (especially in objective gametypes).

EVADE - evade is easily the strongest AA, not close, when you are adept with it. my suggestion to tweak this down to more balanced levels would be to make the cooldown after 2 successive uses slower, but make the cooldown for 1 use faster. what i mean by this is, if i evade once, i will be able to evade twice faster than i would before, but if i evade twice, it will take longer before i can use the double evade again.

INVIS - simple change to this, make the radar jamming not have the invisible person in the direct center of it. instead, make the jamming move AROUND the player so its harder to tell where the player is. to balance this, make the size of said jamming MUCH smaller than it is (about half i’d say). this will make invis a bit more viable at higher levels of play where it basically says ‘IM RIGHT HERE!’, currently lol.

NEW AA 1
just a simple AA that would let players jump off of walls this would be VERY cool, especially at higher levels of play

NEW AA 2
a customizable AA (much like the custom powerup) that players can tweak to give it special settings. this would add a TREMENDOUS amount of replay value (and FUN value) to halo.

Speaking of which, customability levels should be OFF THE CHARTS in halo 4. the ability to change the individual traits for weapons should be built into the GAMETYPES, not the MAPS, so not only would tweaking guns not take a massive title update, they could be done by the COMMUNITY! if this had been done with reach, im 100% sure we would have seen a different version of the DMR being used currently

things to tweak would include
-all options from all halo games
-all gametypes from all halo games
-more options for the gametypes
-more options for custom powerups
-more options for a custom AA
-tweaking individual weapons (max bloom, bloom reset rate, rate of fire, damage, bloom expand rate after shooting)
-tweaking grenades
-tweaking vehicles

Anniversary: Something looks wrong with the new version of the master chief. Anyone else think that the helmet is more rectangular than round like the original?

Just thinking that if 343 is going to use Reach multiplayer in Anniversary why not go all the way and use all the maps from reach by doing what they did with ODST. Also I would like it if my proggresion in Reach is kept for Anniversary’s multiplayer.

> Anniversary: Something looks wrong with the new version of the master chief. Anyone else think that the helmet is more rectangular than round like the original?

The helmet is being worked on. They didn’t have time to finish it before the trailer, but rest assured.

> Anniversary: Something looks wrong with the new version of the master chief. Anyone else think that the helmet is more rectangular than round like the original?

I also think so, so why not use the Mk V helmet from reach (since its the same graphix engine). It would look way better if they did that.

  4. Bloom

  5. Armor Abilities

  6. Theater Mode

  7. Forge/exploring maps

  8. Helping out the Community

  9. Weapons

  10. Gameplay/Players Movement: You probably don’t notice because you are used to Reach, but you walk about 25% slower than any other Halo game. This makes strafing hard, trying to help out opponents around the map is impossible, you literally have to “sprint” away from enemies and even that doesn’t work, and makes the game slower pace/less interesting. The speed needs to be increased as well as the gravity, for Reach seems slow and sluggish compared to the rest of Halo. If you also haven’t noticed, the reload time on most weapons take longer than any other Halo game. Certain guns have an extra animation if you have to reload from an empty magazine, which makes NO sense, because reloading an empty or half-full magazine is the same.

  11. Campaign: If anyone remembers Halo: CE, then if you asked what level they had the most trouble with, they would say “The Library”. If you asked people which level they had the most fun on, they would say “The Library”. It had fear, excitement, sitting on the edge of your seat action, you had to save shotgun ammo because you had no idea if the Flood would be flocking in hundreds at a time or if a few carriers were going to come around the corner. I did not feel that once when I was playing Reach Legendary Campaign. Halo 3 had its moments, but when I completed Halo CE on legendary, that was like beating “The Ocarina of Time”. Campaigns aren’t supposed to be the easy, fun, walking through part of the game, it should be the hardest part, taking at least 2 full days to finish, and you should die on normal at least ONCE on your first run through. If you don’t fix the campaign, and make it longer, more interesting, and not the SECOND thing I do after buying the game, then that doesn’t make it Halo.

  12. Mutliplayer: Halo 2 Multiplayer was the best online multiplayer game of all time, creating the first friends list (at least from what I remember) and community of people/fans that were dedicated to a game. The leveling system was accurate (besides the few boosters) and you would never be facing enemies that haven’t even played the game before. Getting a 40 in Halo 2 was HARD, if you were a 45 you were considered pro. The ONLY flaw in Reach’s matchmaking is that there is no level system. Finding games is faster, having the option to vote for three maps is amazing, but me playing with 3 random teammates who only get 5 kills when I get 32? If you don’t fix the leveling system so that people will be playing with teammates at their same skill level, then that doesn’t make it Halo.

  13. Bloom: This isn’t ODST, we’re not playing as humans, we are super humans able to flip tanks, run at speeds greater than 70 MPH, but we can’t shoot a gun straight and there’s recoil? I do not think that the Assault Rifle should have no bloom, but any gun that is a one shot/burst shot/fires a single bullet, then it should have no recoil. I don’t think people like the BR more than the DMR, they just liked that the BR had no bloom. I understand that Bungie wanted to use bloom to let the game be more random, but the fact is, HALO’S NEVER RANDOM! (Besides random bank shots of a sniper rifle getting an overkill extermination with one shot first strike on the Pit Team snipers, but that takes some skill to think that out first). If bloom isn’t removed from any one shot gun, then that doesn’t make it Halo.

  1. Armor Abilities/Loadouts: I don’t need to discuss these. Remove them. That’s all. In Halo, you not supposed to have an advantage over someone because they chose the wrong Armor Ability. Everyone starts with the same weapon, the same speed, the same EVERYTHING, because that’s how Halo has always been. It’s not CoD where you can have sprint/Marathon to run longer, or move faster, it’s a game that the reason why you are better is because of how you play as soon as the game starts, not getting lucky from having the right choice in an Armor Ability. If you don’t remove Armor Abilities, then this game will be a joke, again. Not even Halo, a Joke.
    WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
  • Make Active Camo ALWAYS invisible.
  • Bring back Over Shield.
  1. Theater Mode: What happened? Now you can’t watch Halo clips at the same time with other people? Fix this. Allow us to watch movies together in theater mode.

  2. Forge/exploring maps: Why create Forge World if there are boundaries? Let us go outside the map, that was the greatest part of Halo, trying to find little glitches/things that the developers made. How can people say that finding the Scarab gun in Halo 2 was not the greatest Campaign experience you’ve had with friends? Also, why is there a limit to how much we can spend, is there a certain amount of data that can be used till you xbox overheats? Give us unlimited of each wall, of each color, of everything, because I can’t remember how many times in Reach where I want to make 4 bases with lights and they only allow 2 lights. Make Forge unlimited. No purchase limit, no number of pieces limit, just everything and anything you want is yours.

IDEAS:

  • Say you wanted a 10x1x3 piece, there should be an option to build a block, put in the certain dimensions, and it spits out a block that exact size you asked. (I remember using a 5x5 Large block and wanting it to be a tiny bit bigger and using 10 other pieces to make it perfect)
  • LET THE GREY BE COLORED! Instead of just the lights changing color, make the GREY change color. I would Forge more if you could actually have different colors and if everything wasn’t grey.
  • Covenant pieces! Let us Forge a map like Midship without having to use the grey block pieces. I want some things with curves, angles, not everything right angled, etc
  1. Helping out the Community: Why can you only have 6 things in your file share if you’re not Bungie Pro? That’s unfair to so many people. Why does it cost 5 bucks to render clips to watch, and if you want a 1 minute clip in HD, then it uses 5 minutes! Bungie scammed us very hard with Halo Reach because they knew they were done with Halo. I don’t know how expensive it is to let us upload clips, but if Treyarch can do it with CoD for free, you should be able too, right?

  2. Weapons: Where’s the beam rifle/mauler/carbine/brute launcher/flamethrower?

Beam Rifle Replacement - Focus Rifle - Doesn’t even compared, not the same guns, bring back a Covenant sniper, a REAL one.
Mauler Replacement - Nothing - They nerfed the shot gun, removed the maulers, fix this somehow?
Carbine Replacement - Needle Rifle - Needle rifle explodes compared to a less powerful/accurate but rapid fire gun? These are not the same weapon in the slightest. If anything the Carbine is a faster/less powerful version of the DMR.
Brute Launcher Replacement - Concussion Rifle - This is the only gun that is accurate, and they look/shoot completely different ammo.

I love playing halo, it is my favorite game series for the Xbox.
I would enjoy having more things in game though (especially after reach)
There weren’t enough weapons or vehicles. When I was making my custom games I felt like everything was the same, they didn’t bring back any of the old, cool vehicles like the prowler, chopper, specter and the like.
After seeing forge worlds I was a little unhappy that it also happened to be the ONLY forge-able map. It got very boring to keep using the same map (albeit big but not big enough to keep using over and over and over) with the same small selection of vehicles and weapons.

I’d love to see
Oodles of vehicles to drive around in
More flying vehicles like the phantom and pelican
Bigger maps
More forge-able maps
Civilian vehicles
(What do you mean you made this awesome forklift of hilarity but I can’t use it in forge??? WHY BUNGIE?)
more weapons
more armor choices (and actually being able to edit my elite’s armor would be excellent)
More playable races like the brutes would add lots more fun and diversity to the game as opposed to seeing a whole lot of the same 2 races.

I love the games so far, hopefully you can make them better!

*Edit:

FIRE. I would love to express my pyromaniac tendencies in game again, burning my enemies was so much fun.

Also, firefight was great but how come there was no option to put bugs in? (The flood would also be excellent)

Please take out Bloom and AA’s, just put it back to the perfect Halo 3 gameplay that everybody loved, other than that I think the games are great  oh yeah, bring back the old weapons from Halo 3, they were also great

Halo 4 needs to have modifiers for Individual Weapon Damage and Bloom.

If you include these options, you guys can make all the design decisions you want in regards to how many shots it takes to kill, or how punishing the bloom is, and all of that rot without disrupting what some of us believe to be that core gameplay feel.

You will never see complaints about long kill times, unfair bloom, or anything like that ever again because players can simply create their own gametypes with or without bloom, and tweak the damage settings on the guns so they kill in the amount of time THEY want them to. If a gametype is popular enough, then I am convinced you guys will put it in matchmaking.

What does this mean? Well, this means you guys can put in AAs, Bloom, and whatever kill times you want without upsetting fans. You can be creative how you want. You can DO what you want, and not upset anyone in the process…Because we’ll have the tools to play how WE want.

One could argue that the damage modifier already does this…But it doesn’t. Classic is a perfect example. While weapon damage is up, so is grenade damage. Grenades are now insta-kill weapons, whereas if we had Individual Weapon Damage modifiers and a Bloom modifier…We could simply up the damage of the DMR, remove the bloom, and the sandbox would remain balanced.

Please…PLEASE 343…Do this for Halo 4. It WILL make your fans happy. It WILL. Guarantee it.

I want all future games to be like Halo 3. Armor Abilities messed things up. It made gameplay too random. It was less about who is better and turned into who is more lucky. Health was a big no no, along with bloom.

> Halo 4: Imo Do’s & Don’ts (Multiplayer)
>
> Subtle changes please. (In Multiplayer)
> Jetpacks and armour abilitys are cool but in solo only. In multiplayer they just make people angry and cheap. If sticking someone across map only to have them armour lock is fun kill me now.
> Bloom: No. Silly attempt to make halo More realistic or maybe skillful, all it did was slow the Pace down and incorperate a element of luck.
> Br: Everyone loves this gun and are devistated it was left out of halo reach
> Classic Playlist: The playlist In halo 3 are far less but far better then that of reach
> Skill Ranking system: Halo 3 system all the way. Reach Was sucky and virtually meant nothing, a major reason why so few play it compared to even halo 3 3 years after release.
> Guns: Dont start adding things in that are idiotic like a needle rifle
>
> Thats all I can think of for now hehe.
> Storymode Just keep it as good as all the rest and ill be happy. Please Listen to this post, I love halo but it sickens me that reach was… Numbers speak for them selves only like 60k people play it. 100k played halo 3 after 3 years.
>
> Thanks 343. <3 Halo

^ I disagree…armor abilities keep the game fresh & fun. Also, the Needle rifle is an amazing gun…better than the DMR…& far better than the BR. The Needle rifle is deathly accurate.

Also to address the guy from the last page…the activity numbers do matter. You might not care, but those numbers mean money…& trust me when I say 343 cares.

Not to sound rude or anything but the next time you guys decide to have halo animated short films made, have stricter guidelines. As good as those guys may be at what they do, they try to incorporate too much of their own styles into it and it is essentially no longer halo. So in closing, developing and maintaining the halo lore is now your responsibility, don’t sell it out to the highest bidder.

I’m not used to this site so I can’t quote. Armor Abilities deviated away from what Halo was. It made the game too random. If you stick someone and they armor lock then they are rewarded for not paying attention. Halo was about who is better, and who wasn’t. If you lost a fight it was your own fault. Not that there was some derpy armor ability getting in your way.

> Dear Admin,

> Please pass this on to the artists @ 343. What in THE HELL happened to the look of the Master Chief. Shouldn’t he look at least as cool as the people from Noble Team? He looks like he was drawn by somebody who never played the original game? Please look at the MC Helmet from H3 as a Model, or look at the Spartans from Halo Wars. I don’t know what happened to the MC in the E3 Anniversary Trailer…but he looked like a goob. Please resolve this so he atleast looks like he did in the original game, but w/ more detail. Also what’s with the box art of the MC w/ the Pistol? Is he supposed to look like the MC or Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat???

Yeah…MC did look a bit off in the CE remake…looked like they pulled him straight out of a N64 game or something :-(. This does need fixed…

YES PLEASE!!! ^^

You know what would make Halo better?

Keyboard and mouse support.

Feedback eh?

well one of the biggest reasons I like halo is that it gives me a chance to survive. What I mean is, in multiplayer, if I start getting shot, I’m not dead before I can react. I have a chance to shoot back or find cover.
Which is another thing, I like being able to put a wall or something between me and the bullets, and not have the bullets follow me through it, I don’t care for the realistic aspect of that whole mechanic. I’m playing a game, if I want to get shot at through walls I’ll go to Lybia or something.

Custom games have always been the best part of Halo. I can’t really put my finger on it, but Reach didn’t really deliver in that area.
Maybe I’ll get back to that one later.

Firefight, as it stands now, is what I enjoy the most. it’s not perfect. I almost like ODST firefight more. Needs more SMG I think.

I think drones are actually fun to fight.

DMR is not fun for me. I have more fun using the AR.

Forge is great. Needs more stuff though. Not just blocks. Even a Lego castle has flags.

Theater…it’s great. Maybe have a skip forward button, but that’s it.

Campaign: Okay so It’s typical to say Halo CE and Halo 2 had the best campaigns. But seriously. It’s true.

Why? Because you start in space. (JK maybe) One thing I think of is how many teammates you have. In Reach you always had another spartan. who was useless. Kat Drives off cliffs, Jun doesn’t know how to sneak around and team kills. Emile has no depth perception. Jorge…well he’s cool. Carter actually saved me a few times, so he’s okay.

But in H2 you sometimes have a few marines, and that’s it. And they were ammo carriers and distractions.

I can’t really explain why I liked the older Halos. Unless it’s that there was always a gun with 60 rounds.

Keep it simple.
