The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

so this is the official why did i get banned page huh. How about this i just got banned i quit some matches because im busy with my kids or am on a horrible team and just want to leave i payed good money for this fn game and should be allowed to play when the f i want so either lift my ban and stop banning people unless they continuously betray or suicide or give me back my money and take this game with you.If this does not stop ill just delete it and play Call of Duty where there are no idiotic rules like this. i dont pay to play this game just to be told i can’t over something as moronic as this.Thank you

Ok so this has happened a few times now, at the end of the game my console says its lost connection to the servers and this is when I’ve finished the game were you can see the spartans at the end of an arena match, I’ve had this happen before at it was ok because my ban was only 30 minutes, but now its 8 hours… So does this happen to anyone else, can I raise a support ticket to get unbanned?

I was kicked out of a game this morning.

> The following FAQ should answer some of your questions about Halo 5 bans. We will update this FAQ as necessary.
>
> I received an in-game message saying I have been banned. Why?
> If you are checking this page because of an in-game message, it is likely that you have been banned for violating the terms of use and/or committing a code of conduct violation. It is also possible, in the case of an especially egregious violation, that your Xbox One system itself is now banned from Matchmaking. The duration of this ban is based on the type, frequency or nature of the committed violation. In most cases, Custom Games will still be available. In extreme cases, they will not.
>
> How can I tell how long I was banned for?
> Ban duration will be shown on the red ban screen as the ban hammer strikes. First offences are generally low and last only a few minutes, but will increase in duration incrementally with each subsequent ban. The ban timer itself displays times as follows - Days : Hours : Minutes : Seconds
>
> What types of actions can result in a ban?
> Types of violation include, but are not limited to, the following example actions:
>
> - Modifying your Xbox One hardware or game software and services in any way.
> - Idling through games, habitual quitting/suiciding/betraying, or any other type of unsociable and unsportsmanlike behavior.
> - Impersonating a 343 Industries or Microsoft employee on Xbox LIVE with intent to defraud or cause harm to other players.
> I shouldn’t be banned. My brother/sister/cousin/dad/mom/friend must’ve logged on with my account and done bad things. Will you please reverse my ban?
> If this is indeed the case, we do understand your frustration. However, it is your sole responsibility to keep your account information secure and not share it with others who would abuse it. We have no way of detecting who is playing with your account, and if your gamertag is caught making naughty, you will be banned. Those are the rules.
>
> I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?
> Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.
>
> Will posting in this thread guarantee my ban will be lifted and that someone will respond personally to every post?
> Unfortunately, no. We simply don’t have enough eyes, ears and typing hands to respond to every single post. However, the community will help keep you honest. You have a public game history for everyone to see. If you post you were banned unjustly, the community is in their rights to check out your history to confirm or deny your claims. Please, just keep it clean.
>
> The purpose of this thread is to keep all questions pertaining to bans in one place. Without a megathread for such questions, the rest of the forum will almost certainly turn into a cavalcade of ban questions.
>
> If you were banned and think you have a case, this is the ONLY thread you should post in. If other moderators see posts pertaining to bans in other threads, they will either be deleted outright or a kind-hearted mod might just move the posts to this thread.
>
> If any users are caught habitually spamming ban threads in other threads, we will consider that a violation of the forum Terms of Use. You will risk being banned here as well. We don’t want to have to ban anyone, but we do want an open, honest and positive place to post about all things Halo, so a thread like this is necessary.

I disconnected from the server once and got banned for 2 Whole hours from arena. Why?

I’d like to know when the banhammer timer resets, and how does it decide on the duration of a ban? I’ve seen bans for anywhere between 2 and a half minutes, right through to over two hours. Yeah, I’ve quit out of games recently, and I’ve lagged out of others. So why should I cop multiple bans in successive days? There should be bans for those who are spawn killing in griftball and not finishing the flipping game. Ridiculous to think I’m going to stay there and get screwed over by jerks.

But anyway. The ban timer - does it reset? How does it decide on your ban time?

i pay, i play.
i cant believe u can ban somone from a game that have PAYED with MY money

remove this stupid banhamer… just decrese the rank who viole rules

edit::
i MUST play because i SPENT my MONEY…
guys this is real… just ban me in ranked matchmaking, let me play fiesta ir griftball… incredible… i ll never buy halo in future

> I quit 1 ****ing game tonight! 1 and I get banned for 52 minutes! Stop banning people you morons… Seriously…Fix the damn system. -_-

1 quit does not cause a ban, it takes multiple unfinished matches which you have in your service record

> I keep getting banned for no reason almost every time I play. The other day I got banned in the middle of an FFA game (where I was very close to winning). I haven’t violated the rules, but for some reason I keep getting banned.

You have multiple unfinished games in your service record which will add up to your bans.

When you buy the game you agree to abide by the terms set out by the developers.

As above. Decreasing rank will do nothing but enourage more people to quit, then we’ll be back to the Halo 3 days when it was rife with boosters and de-rankers.

Ban system is incremental, it starts at a few minutes and increases on each subsequent ban. It will only ever reach ban lengths of days if there is a significant history of quitting, betraying or idling.

> I disconnected from the server once and got banned for 2 Whole hours from arena. Why?

You have multiple unfinished matches in your service recrod which will count towards your ban

I think the system is a bit too ban happy. I got banned because I had a few unfinished games, but it was only 4 DNFs since my last ban over the course of almost a week.

Hi.
I keep getting random banned. I have two videos on my Xbox account of me seeing the end game cinematic of the wining team’s Spartans when all of a sudden it brings me to the arena mode select screen. It then says 1 or more players in your fire team have been banned, and then I go back and it says I got banned for quitting too many games. Please help, this is very aggravating and given the fact it happened twice in a day soon I wont be able to play halo at all.

Yes, I’ve had this same thing happen a lot recently. The game crashes out during the closing animation of a match and than I get banned. Only for the last week or so.

Wow. I was banned for 42 minutes… 42 MINUTES!!! For leaving ONE -Yoinking!- GAME. JUST ONE. And the only reason I left is because another teammate left at the very start of the match which -Yoinked!- us over and they just spawn camped us for the rest of the game. it ended up being 2 to 21 by the time I quit and I’m the one that had the 2 kills on the team. Is this -Yoink- serious? For one game I get banned? That’s totally fair.

Ok, so I bought an Xbox one just to play halo 5. I have been banned for over 24 hours now and still cant access matchmaking or community. Really disappointed with halo 5 and 343 industries and I am thinking of returning my entire xbox due to this stupid ban problem. Please unban me. This is ridiculous! Its saturday night and I cant relax and play video games during my spring break! WTF!?

To quote the Mods: ā€œYou have multiple unfinished matches on your service record.ā€
Here’s the thing: while you do have multiple DNFs on your service records, the span of time between your most recent and your previous DNF was literally months. IMO this ban was clearly unjust.

I’ll be honest, I think that the banhamer is flawed and this just proves my point. I had a hunch that the system didn’t care how long it’s been between DNFs. This just confirms that in my eyes/

I was kicked out of another warzone game this morning.

Did you quit at all though?

Isn’t there a way to tell between a disconnection and a quit? I understand that disconnections, according to the rules, are treated like a quit. There must be a way to differentiate the two.

At the moment there is not - anyone can simply turn off their xbox / wif or pull their cable out and say they got disconnected.

You have multiple unfinished matches over the past week. To reach a ban length of 24 hours means that you need to have been banned multiple times already. All bans are handled by automated systems, they generally won’t be reversed.

I would like to know why I was banned from arena for 24 hours after winning a arena slayer game type?

So how long does a ban stay on your record? Forever? I just went through my game history, and I only bothered to count up to my last 115 matches because it give a plenty clear picture. I just received an hour ban for quitting my 2nd game in 115 matches. I got banned a couple weeks ago for 20 minutes and didn’t want to push it, so I haven’t quit since until today when I was placed on 3 of the worst teams I’ve ever been a part of on social slayer and I just couldn’t take it. I figured my record would be cleaned after not quitting for over 100 matches, but NOPE! 1 hour ban. Give me a break. So you’re telling me I can never quit a game again for the rest of the life of this game otherwise I’m going to be banned for it?

EDIT: Decided to look up to 5 quits. 5 quits in 161 games. That’s what’s considered ā€œhabitualā€ quitting?
