The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

**“I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?**Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.”

This is completely wrong, I didn’t do anything, and somehow I’m banned?! I didn’t leave the game early, I didn’t commit suicide at all, or anything unsportsmanlike. Just randomly a few seconds after the game ended I was taken back to the home screen, no ban message, but for some reason I’m not able to play any online games. So clearly I was banned and I don’t know why, and for how long.

Its my second offense apparently, (the first one was probably my fault, but that’s mostly because of my awful internet) and I’ve been banned for over 2 days now. How long is this ban supposed to last? Is there anyway I can lift it?

I don’t see a ban on FireFox7227, so you are likely experiencing a different issue.

This is dumb I get banned bc I left a match of infection to go make food and some toxic lil brat reported me bc I killed him a few times a banning system shouldn’t take effect over such trivial things if I was in ranked yeah sure whatever but even if I leave there it’s to protect my kd I only leave if I’m just having a -Yoink- match and changes are if I’m having that bad of a match you have a better chance of winning without me I’m done with this it’s a joke I’ve played a day and im a plat 3 and banned for a match of infection fornite dont banned for leaving a match that might be why its having way more success these days

From your service record you have 8 DNFs between yesterday and today. Your ban wasn’t for leaving one match, it was because you left multiple matches and finally hit a cooldown.

Yes, a 10 minute cooldown was issued for too many quits. If you do it again too soon it goes up to 20 minutes, and keeps escalating after that.

Unlike fortnite, when you leave a match, you ruin it for everyone in the match. Your team has a much better chance of winning 4v4 than 4v3, even if you are having a bad match.

There’s no point in protecting KD since it is not an accurate measure of skill in the presence of matchmaking, only your rank (CSR) is, and that will be penalized as well if you leave matches.

So, i bought the game when it was released. Loaned the disc to a friend and never got it back. Now i have downloaded the game from Gamepass and i can’t play online or co-op or even a custom match. I haven’t played the game since sometime in 2016. Every time i try, when going to multiplayer it says “Could not find a server that was suitable for all members of your fireteam” and when i try to go to coop and start a game it says “Error retrieving data center connection quality information”.

I have an Open nat, i have reset the operating system on my xbox, i have uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Halo Support has been ZERO help, as no one has answered my question about what is going on. So i was hoping someone could tell me if i’ve been banned and just don’t know it and if so why. Is it because i downloaded it from Gamepass? I have zero problems on any other online games

This is for Halo 5…

Those messages indicate that you are not banned. Your issues are something else, likely connection issues.

That’s where my conundrum lies…i have no connection issues on any other game except Halo 5. Any ideas of what i could possibly do to fix it? I’m an I.T. person by trade, so i’ve already performed the typical turning on and off stuff. IF anyone can think of anything deeper than that, please lemmie know i’d appreciate it  and thankyou for answering my first question

That would be something to create a thread for in the support section. This thread is specifically for bans.

I tried that. That’s specifically why i posted here thinking i may have been banned. I posted in Support over a week ago and not a single person has responded…i’ll try again i guess…

I will admit I get a little hot headed at times and end up quitting matches, but more often then not I have gotten bans due to factors besides physically quitting matches. One is connection, and thats on me, but I have another case that has happened time and time again. upon completing matches, the screen will freeze and I will end up having to restart the whole game- I will load back in and get a message saying I have been temporarly banned from arena playlists, and I have been able to rack up large timers due to this combined with connection.

Honestly I have very little faith that the algorithm works how it is described, because I would have hoped it recognized this reoccuring pattern.

If you freeze postgame, you shouldn’t be loaded into the next game. Even if somehow that was happening to you, if you restart as soon as you notice it’s freezing you won’t be in matchmaking anymore.

I see 10 DNFs in your last 30 games which is quite a bit and will definitely start leading to some escalating bans.

Like I said I have a lot of reoccuring issues with matchmaking, and maybe 2 of those 10 were intentional quitting. Its been a lot worse lately too- I just switched to spectrum not too long ago so I could see that as the source of the connection issues. But as for the freezing, I have no idea. I usually listen for the game sounds to stop before restarting (because if the game sounds stop it usually means its 100% frozen)

I get a ban for falling off the Sleipnir map?! Are you serious?!
I commit suicide (always accidently) a couple times a day… Maybe once every 3-4 games! And I fall off the narrowest -Yoinking!- map in the entire Halo series and get a ban?

Hello,I am currently banned for all multiplayer game modes. Although this is a temporary ban lasting only 8 minutes, it was not caused by inappropriate gameplay. I have continuously “lost connection” or randomly booted due due to connections. I would like some feed back on this due to the frequency and possibility of getting banned again due to this issue. Thank you for your time!

In order to be booted/banned for excessive suicides you have to commit suicde 3 or 4 times in a match usually with them in close proximity to each other.

Failure to maintain connection is on the list of bannable offenses and is treated the same as any other dnf.

I just got banned for disconnecting mid-game, this happened a couple times in a row but it was due to my internet going out which has been happening a lot in my area lately. This wasn’t my fault but judging from the post above it’s still a valid ban…

Unfortunately, yes. Disconnects have to be treated as quits, if they weren’t then the system would be open to abuse. Players would be able to switch off their WiFi, pull their LAN cable or switch off their Xbox and easily escape a loss without penalty. If it’s only something that happens on occasion then it’s nothing to worry about, ban times will be short and it takes a few actions to trigger a ban in Halo 5. if you find that you are frequently disconnecting then that may be something worth looking into.

Ok, thanks for the info. Unfortunately it’s not a problem with my xbox, but rather my internet itself constantly going in and out. I figured I’d play some Halo and it just happened to go out one too many times while I was in a game/s. I’m unbanned now but does this count as a “strike” on my account or is that not something you guys do?

In-game bans don’t affect anything here and moderators here don’t have any effect on in-game bans (we don’t work for 343). Halo 5’s bans track over time, but are fairly forgiving from my experience
