The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

So i was just banned, got the banhammer message and everything. I waited like 5 minutes and it was lifted. Can anyone share why this may have happened? I did quit a game right before but was just wondering why it would appear and then be lifted.

Social games shouldn’t cause bans, thats -Yoinking!- stupid.

> The following FAQ should answer some of your questions about Halo 5 bans. We will update this FAQ as necessary.
>
> I received an in-game message saying I have been banned. Why?
> If you are checking this page because of an in-game message, it is likely that you have been banned for violating the terms of use and/or committing a code of conduct violation. It is also possible, in the case of an especially egregious violation, that your Xbox One system itself is now banned from Matchmaking. The duration of this ban is based on the type, frequency or nature of the committed violation. In most cases, Custom Games will still be available. In extreme cases, they will not.
>
> How can I tell how long I was banned for?
> Ban duration will be shown on the red ban screen as the ban hammer strikes. First offences are generally low and last only a few minutes, but will increase in duration incrementally with each subsequent ban. The ban timer itself displays times as follows - Days : Hours : Minutes : Seconds
>
> What types of actions can result in a ban?
> Types of violation include, but are not limited to, the following example actions:
>
> - Modifying your Xbox One hardware or game software and services in any way.
> - Idling through games, habitual quitting/suiciding/betraying, or any other type of unsociable and unsportsmanlike behavior.
> - Impersonating a 343 Industries or Microsoft employee on Xbox LIVE with intent to defraud or cause harm to other players.
> I shouldn’t be banned. My brother/sister/cousin/dad/mom/friend must’ve logged on with my account and done bad things. Will you please reverse my ban?
> If this is indeed the case, we do understand your frustration. However, it is your sole responsibility to keep your account information secure and not share it with others who would abuse it. We have no way of detecting who is playing with your account, and if your gamertag is caught making naughty, you will be banned. Those are the rules.
>
> I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?
> Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.
>
> Will posting in this thread guarantee my ban will be lifted and that someone will respond personally to every post?
> Unfortunately, no. We simply don’t have enough eyes, ears and typing hands to respond to every single post. However, the community will help keep you honest. You have a public game history for everyone to see. If you post you were banned unjustly, the community is in their rights to check out your history to confirm or deny your claims. Please, just keep it clean.
>
> The purpose of this thread is to keep all questions pertaining to bans in one place. Without a megathread for such questions, the rest of the forum will almost certainly turn into a cavalcade of ban questions.
>
> If you were banned and think you have a case, this is the ONLY thread you should post in. If other moderators see posts pertaining to bans in other threads, they will either be deleted outright or a kind-hearted mod might just move the posts to this thread.
>
> If any users are caught habitually spamming ban threads in other threads, we will consider that a violation of the forum Terms of Use. You will risk being banned here as well. We don’t want to have to ban anyone, but we do want an open, honest and positive place to post about all things Halo, so a thread like this is necessary.
>
> Thanks in advance!

I take offence to this because there are many people that false report people and the so called “moderators” don’t even investigate it. So if someone is false reported they are just banned instantly in most cases. So if you plan to impliment something like this then make sure your moderators do their job and actually investigate before just going with what someone says, thank you.

I see a lot of people complaining about getting banned because they get disconnected at the end of a game, before the stats come out, it happened to me too. So are we all having connection issue? Or is it a server problem? Did anyone in 343i answer that question already?

Also, if it’s a connection problem, why do we get kicked out only at the end of the game and have no issue during the game?

Just so I understand correctly, are you talking about bans here on Waypoint or bans in Halo 5 itself? If it’s in Halo 5 itself then the ban system is automated, it’s not that case that moderators are reviewing every player and placing bans on their accounts. If it’s about bans here on Waypoint, please feel free to contact one of the moderation team if you have any questions.

> So if I quit one arena game, would I be banned the next match that I complete?

No, it takes multiple offences or a patterned history of offences to place a ban on your account

It was here on waypoint and I did attempt to follow it up with one of them and he said “he doesn’t have time”.

I never really understood why the Halo 5 ban system is automated, automated ban systems in my opinion seem a bit like they are in control of our lives. If someone wants to drop out of a match, let them. Nobody has the right to control anybody, not like that anyhow. I haven’t been banned once, no. But a ban that is automated is completely unfair. We are supposed to let a machine control how we play an online game?

Yes they absolutely do. Its their game and they are allowed to control that type of thing.

When quitting a game is either a 1 or a 0, a machine is perfect for the job.

Having a team manually reviewing and placing bans on players would horrible, horrible, horrible, monotonous task that I wouldn’t wish on my first enemy. Over-dramatacism aside ;), for the amount of players that Halo and other games have, it really would be a momentous task for any team to sift through and manage bans manually. Having a primarily automated system alleviates the grunt work involved in that. I’m sure that in certain circumstances, it can be intervened if something serious has gone wrong

Yea, it this thread doesn’t do a whole lot but its better than clogging up the forum with pointless posts.

The reason you don’t get any help here is because its the same story every time. You quit too much, then you got banned and claim to not know why. Rinse. Repeat.

I shouldn’t be banned my internet has been going on and off all day, I tried fixing it reset my dmz, reset router… changed Ethernet cables… ! wtf ive never been banned from any halo in my life…

True, but the reason people are posting so much is because it gets seen more than comments on here. People want something done about it because its not all that cut and dry. People are being banned for leaving single matches, and that’s a fact, not just one giant ruse made up by quitting -Yoink–nozzles. My game playing hasn’t changed since H3, and I’ve never been banned like this. It’s just Guardians. Every Halo before this one has been fine.

There are still rules against making those posts, but I get it. I think its one of those things were very few people are actually in the right.

My brother, 3 friends and i haven’t quit any games in weeks, we all left 1 game and all of us got a ban.

Even though it was a 15 minute ban, it was still a ban, so the next time that I actually disconnect, we might end up with a 1-3 hour ban, for no reason whatsoever.

I just lagged out again. For the record, the reason I made a thread a little while ago was from an intentional quit due to betrayers on my team. I haven’t lagged out in about a month. That being said… These games should not count towards a ban! I think this is something like my 6th total “quit” on this account and three of them are lag outs, the other 3 are 1v4s and people killing themselves.

They need to fix these servers because I kid you not, look at my internet speed test I just ran: http://www.speedtest.net/result/5160345383.png
It’s definitely not me! Haha… I’m usually around 100 down and 10 up at all times but yet I’m getting games like this:

(Yes this is the game I just lagged out of at the end of the clip). As you can see from the clip, I did not quit, the score was 12-15 and it just started being screwing up.

These servers are stupid.

I was just about to start playing MP in Halo 5 when I saw all of those complaints. Bad servers and a poorly programmed ban bot. That’s pretty serious. If you want to get Microsoft’s attention, take it to Twitter. Both Phil Spencer and Larry Hryb watch for any & all direct messages. And if this problem is as serious as it sounds, they can & will force 343 Studios to take action.

Their contacts are, Phil Spencer @XboxP3 and Larry Hryb @majornelson. You can message them both at the same time.

I was banned for idling, but I wasn’t! I admit I’ve quit games in the past, but I did not quit, idle, commit suicide, etc.
What can I do?

Quit a game in the few months of owning it because my HDMI cable disconnected(long story) so I couldn’t see the game so I turned off my Xbox and got back on to find out I have a 40 minute ban. claps wow 343, your ban system sucks

Check out the amount of DNF’s you have in Arena and Warzone, maybe you idled, AFK’d,or Betrayed aswell, all of that can add up to your ban.
claps wow HeavyWeapons057, the ban system got it right.
