The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

I got banned for 30 minutes because I accidentally fell off of the map three times. I’m new to this game and some of the maps are pretty easy to fall off of. It’s not intuitive whether a particular pit will kill you or whether it will lead you to another part of the map.

This is ridiculous. I understand booting people who repeatedly commit suicide because it hurts your team. However, handing out a ban after one offense is brutal.

Back to Master Chief Collection!

I was banned for leaving a match to go to work on time? What kind of bird brain crap is that? I also just started playing and my “ban” doesn’t say how long. Might as well just get into FortNite if this is how you treat your PAYING customers

You’ve DNF’d (DNF = did not finish) 10/47 matches. To put that in different statistical terms you quit on average 1/5 matches, or 21.28% percent of the time. In terms of time frame, you started playing on the 15th so you’ve quit 10 matches in 5 days.

> I was banned for leaving a match to go to work on time?

If you’re old enough to hold a job, you should probably understand how long matches take and the fact that you’re gambling if you choose to play a match close to when you need to leave for your shift. If you choose to start a match near your departure time, you are committing your time to the match. If you break that commitment, there can be consequences like this.

> What kind of bird brain crap is that?

Yeah it is, but you’re being a little hard on yourself.

> I also just started playing and my “ban” doesn’t say how long.

If I understand correctly, there is a message that pops up that shows you how long you are banned for, and once that message has been dismissed you cannot find that information again. If this is your first ban I’d wager it will be less than 24 hours. Just try not to DNF in the future.

> Might as well just get into FortNite if this is how you treat your PAYING customers

Ok! Have fun with Fortnite! It’s pretty fun. It doesn’t scratch my Halo itch, or arena-shooter itch, but it’s certainly some good fun

PLEASE LIFT MY 24 hour ban!!! You can check my recent games and see it was done out of complete accident all that I’ve done was be playing halo then I receive a phone call or place one after the match and forget to leave the lobby resulting in me joining the game but sitting idle so I get kicked out and then banned for confusion of quoting please help !!! At the very least take it from 24 hours to 6 or so I jumped up from 2 hour band to 6 hour band straight to 24 IM OFF THE NEXT 2 DAYS I CANT BE BANNED :frowning:

So after review my game history I see that this has happened in the past I have 9 DNF’s and have played either 80 or 90 games it’s obvious there unknown accidents to me though because I play so repetitiously then I have a DNF out of no where please HELP

So you were idling and were banned? You get a 'DNF" for every game you don’t finish. That includes the ones where you were booted for idling. The ban system is automated. It monitors your behavior and enacts a ban when it is appropriate. I’ve yet to hear about a ban being overturned. Bans get progressively longer with repeated offenses.

I turned my xbox off last night around 8 pm. I turned it back on today around 4:15 pm and started up Halo. I got a red and black banner saying " THE BANHAMMER STRIKES you have been placed on a cool down from Arena matchmaking for joining matches then idling. Cool down duration 5:24:31"
I just payed $60 for a year of this service to play online and I cant even play the next day after turning it off? What gives?!

On your record you do have a few DNF’s. You must exit out of the lobby, so the game does not put you into another match. Quitting, idling, and griefing can get you banned. The system looks for patterns and dolls out punishment accordingly.

So I was banned for idk how long…but it doesn’t say on the red “attention” screen. Just got banned. Did somebody hack me?

as a side note I’ve been playing halo since it’s been around connecting through lan. I know u can get banned for various reasons. However I can’t seem to figure out why I have been banned. Are other people experiencing this problem? And am I missing the ban duration info?

Are you certain you’re banned? What do you see when you attempt to join a playlist?

> Did somebody hack me?

No.

> as a side note I’ve been playing halo since it’s been around connecting through lan

In H5?

> . I know u can get banned for various reasons.

The most common reasons are griefing/excessive DNFS/Idling. Some others include network or matchmaking manipulation. Have you done any of these?

> However I can’t seem to figure out why I have been banned. Are other people experiencing this problem? And am I missing the ban duration info?

When you’re banned you receive a notification to your console stating you’ve been banned, why, and for how long. If you dismiss it to quickly than the ban time isn’t viewable otherwise. Bans start off short and effectively double with each continued misbehavior.

I do apologize for any lack of ettiequte I conduct here in the forum but I will say I now believe their is a problem with the “ban hammer” system. While I was attempting to reset my modem and reinstall factory settings to my xbox the computer detected the trouble shooting as network manipulation and/or idling. perhaps due to the amount of time the software is disconnected from your modem or alerts set to recognize suspicious network activity. This is a problem as there are strict guidelines for permanent bans and for those who don’t know how long they are suspended for and there is no resolution center.

Thank you for your responses and although again I am uncertain and apologize for that to answer your questions.

  • Are you certain you’re banned? What do you see when you attempt to join a playlist?
it just says at least one player in your fireteam is not permitted to play xbox live multiplayer games

  • in H5?
in the original halo games playlists were operated on a pc and you hooked your xbox up to the pc and then the pc connected to the live game

  • The most common reasons are griefing/excessive DNFS/Idling. Some others include network or matchmaking manipulation. Have you done any of these?
just reinstalled system settings and restarted my modem

This sounds more like your Gold subscription is dead. This is also a thread for dealing with bans from Halo 5.

Just trying to figure out why I was banned so I can go forward not doing whatever it was again. I wasn’t speaking as I didn’t have my mic in, I’ve never cheated in my halo career, I hadn’t left any games, and I wasn’t killing my teammates. I just want to know what caused my ban.

I was banned because I was away for 1minite

Your last three matches were DNFs and you were idle for more than a minute

So, uh, my game literally froze during a game of team slayer and I had to force quit the application. I imagine that will count as a disconnect? Can I get into trouble for this? (I haven’t tried reconnecting as I do need to get food items; I guess I’ll know for sure when I log back in).

If you have excessive disconnects you can be banned for it; the occasional one isn’t going to be an issue.

I was playing quick play on Coliseum and every time i would use the splinter grenades that spawn on those two pedestals my teamates would run into/ back into the fragments and kill themselves, this happened 3 times and 2 other times teamates spartan charged/ground pounded enemies from out of frame as i fired a missile at said enemy, couldn’t have been more unfortunate, i even messaged a few of my teamates to apologize but bad luck just kept coming my way. it was completely unintentional. I always return someones weapon in warzone and try my damndest to never be afk or quit.

But if i love connection to my wifi once every 2 to 3 hours to 1 to 15 minutes then the system will count about 20 disconnected per week and say not an accident itll be better when i get better wifi

I realize that some betrayals are unintentional, but most of them are preventable and if you’re betraying the three people it takes for automatic boot than you should probably be a little more careful in the future. Even if you’re incidents were accidental the system has no way of telling an accidental betrayal from an intentional one and betraying is one of the more common form of griefing.

I assume you meant, 'Lose connection."
Excessive disconnections from the servers are on the list of ban worthy offenses. You can take steps to improve your connection to prevent this. There have been a few threads detailing methods to decrease disconnects that you can easily view using the search feature.
