The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

Hi there!

My gamertag: Axcalibur
My son’s gamertag: Super Waffle 25
My son plays Halo 5 online using my Xbox Live account (he’s attached via family account - on same Xbox One).
He brought it to my attention tonight that he couldn’t play certain modes.
I looked and he’s banned from all Social and Ranked modes (but still has access to Warzone).

This ban is not the result of communication - because I’ve set his account to block all forms of communication.
I’ve contacted Microsoft Support and reviewed their Enforcement page and he has no infractions on there - so it’s definitely an in-game ban specific to Halo 5.

I imagine the reason for this ban is one of two reasons:

 1. Quitting matches - this would be a result of him not actually turning off the Xbox and just leaving it on, so he’s put in a match, then kicked for inactivity.
 2. Not playing well - he’s a young gamer and maybe other players get annoyed and report him.

I would like to know what the ban was caused by so that I can teach him proper online etiquette and I’d like the ban reversed so that he can have an opportunity to learn from his mistakes. Keep in mind that this is a young gamer but loves Halo (it’s the only shooter we let him play in our household).

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Hi there.
I took a look at your son’s game history and found a number of DNF matches. This is most likely the source of the matchmaking ban. The reason of DNFs can vary, from actively quitting, to getting booted for inactivity/betraying/suiciding, to disconnects. All those reasons can lead to matchmaking bans.
As for the reversal of the ban, that is probably not in the cards. It’s an automated system, but beyond that all cases must be treated equally. Your son will need to wait out the ban. If it’s the first time being banned, the ban shouldn’t last long.

Hello Chimera30!

Thank you for the reply (and quick one too!). I appreciate you looking into the matter - I couldn’t find where to look for his DNF matches and so it’s good to know that’s the reason for it. He’s a young gamer who just doesn’t know any better, so this will be a teachable moment.

I didn’t realize the banhammer was timed - as it didn’t indicate as such when he showed me he couldn’t play, however when I started his game this morning, I see it shows a message at the start of the screen with the countdown. I was worried it was a permanent ban at first, but fortunately, since it’s a timed ban so it’s not “too late” and he’ll get access to his game again.

Thanks again for the response!

Hello fellow Spartans.

My Gamertag is: Lyzer401

I received a ban while i was playing a match on Ranked arena and i feel it was unjust/wrong and xbox at support told me to come here so here is the story.

I joined Ranked arena, I was paired up with other players, and the match started.

The very first thing that happend was one of the teammates disconnected/left the game, Meaning my team only had three players while the opposing team had a full team of four. I understand this happens from time to time, not complaining about that.

One player on my team, started to open fire on fellow teammates including myself. The player who was team-killing killed me a few times. I sent xbox a report of unsportsmanlike behavior/team killing on that account. So the next time i spawned, the player started to open fire on me again. At this point all i wanted to do was defend myself from him, i did not fire upon my other team mate only the one who fired upon on me on purpose. I say on purpose because no member of the enemy team was present when he fired upon me. So clearly was not a case of friendly fire. After successfully defending myself from getting killed from this team killer i got banned.

I understand team killing or betrayal is a bannable offense, but in my case i was only trying to defend myself, the other player on my team i had no problems with and we worked together.

I know it’s a really crappy thing to have happen. But if you had not fought back and he had killed you, the the ban would have been given to him. Not much you can do about those type of people. If this was your first ban, then the wait time will not be long.

There should be some sort of function in the ban system where if a teammate betrays you too many times, he’s fair game, and you don’t lose any points or get banned for killing in self defense.

There is. When your teammate betrays you, enough, they get banned. But not points. I feel your pain!

First you keep dropping me into losing games half way through, then punish me for quitting. Quit vs stats…any gamer would choose to protect their stats.

Surely this banning system is against consumer rights. Paying for a service that I am banned to use… how is that legal? IMHO a class action suite should be brought against you. In doing my research in entire history of corporate business Microsoft ranks in the top 5 global organizations when it comes to egregious business practices and legal suites. Go figure. Will never buy an Microsoft product again. Selling this crappy XBox experience and moving on.

Anyone interested in exploring a class action suit against Microsoft for breaching the Federal Consumer Act and your rights to be provided the services that you have paid for, please email me through this forum or REDACTED

You do realize that you agree to the terms of service when you buy xbox live? Waste your time and money if you want, but it will get you nothing.

Thrown out of a match earlier and banned for literally no reason. Why?
Disregard apparently xbox live subscription ended during the match. Wow theres no warning at all and still a ban! Thanks anyways.

I literal got banned because i didn’t know a map and kept falling off then it banned me for “Griefing My Teamates”

Hello everyone, quite a while ago I was banned from my halo 5 game, so I came on just recently to hoping it had gone away, it hadn’t (I’m assuming I have been permanently banned). The only reason I think I could have been banned in this way is because I have quit the game around 20 times over a 3 month period, but most of these were due to server lag. I was hoping that someone could help me get my account back and perhaps lift the ban?

If it was simply from quitting/dnfs than you almost certainly weren’t permabanned; those tend to be for more serious or extreme and frequent violations. Now I have a few questions; Did you receive a ‘banhammer strikes’ message?" What kind of message do you receive when you attempt to join a matchmaking playlist? Is this both for Warzone and Arena?

You aren’t likely to be unbanned; I’ve yet to see a ban overturned. You’ll most likely have to wait for your ban to be over (if you are in fact banned.)

Also for future reference; please avoid post bumping/multiposting (particularly if you’re posting the same thing.) You can edit posts to add more information and respond to multiple people in a single post. It also isn’t going to get you an answer any faster.

Was this edited for posting a link? I read through the forum rules and the only thing that I see this possibly falling under is a rant. Also, to be fair, I’m “quoting” this as a citation for my query- not reposting edited content. Also, if posting links/personal information is against the rules, is it going to be added to the list?

As you’ve PM’d me already I’ll folllow up there, but as a note for the future we don’t discuss moderator decisions in public. If you have a question, PM is always the way to go

It says the ban hammer strikes for any matchmaking playlist I try to join. Also it’s like they’ve disconnected me from the servers because when I first go onto the game it says “Attention unable to connect to the halo 5 guardians lobby service” and I click ok then all of my service record is gone I have nothing left of my old profile, and it says I’ve just started the game, however you can see that’s not true if you look at my halo 5 profile on the waypoint.

That isn’t a ban. There were some xbox live issue earlier this evening, I’m not sure if they’ve cleared up now. You should give your console a hard reset and make sure your live connection is working properly

Are you sure that bad connection would delete my profile data?

A poor connection could prevent your profile from updating. If you were banned when you attempted to join a playlist it would read something along the lines of “one or more of your fireteam members are banned.”
