This this was introduced quite recently. As long as you’re not the first to quit you won’t be penalized.

I believe this rule is only in ranked playlists.
Trying to figure out why my son keeps getting banned for “idling.” He plays every match all the way to the end. Has happened twice. What is the definition of idling?
I was banned 2 hours for idling but was playing all the games so I played after the ban made sure I wasn’t idling to avoid being banned again I turn on halo and I’m banned for a day and a half for idling? What is going on?

Idling literally means idling during matches. Remaining completely still (I.E. No controller input) during a match for a period of three minutes will cause the player to be booted from the match and may result in a ban.

You were idle during your last match on Molten. I can post a link to the video if you’d like.
Was I playing? Or did my character just stay still until till he was kicked because the only thing I can think happens would be im leaving halo by finishing a game and immediately hitting the x box home button and going to movies and may be it’s somehow putting me in a game like I never left which sounds ridiculous but so does me idling in a game while not being aware of it because I’ve never had this problem before I defenetly don’t get into a game and not touch the controller for 3 minutes or even 1 really? May be its happened once in a thousand games so please post the video link or you could just tell me if my character sat still till booted?

You were in the match. You either didn’t quit matchmaking after you were ‘done’ or you intentionally idled. The system doesn’t care which. You were idle during a match therefore your got booted and banned. If this was accidental then I’d suggest backing out of matchmaking when you no longer wish to play or closing Halo 5 or shutting off your xbox.

Then the banning system is flawed. He is continually playing and moving around the whole match. He may idle for a few seconds at a time, but 3 minutes…No. just check moknkeyman

Link the GT and give approximate time of the ban I’ve yet to see anyone who was bannned inappropriately for idling.

So if my entire team quits, which seems to be happening quite frequently as of late, and I quit, because being the last man or two standing and getting slayed to all hell sucks, I get the hammer dropped? That’s not cool

The “soft forfeit” feature (feature that means if you quit after someone else has already quit, you won’t get banned) only applies to ranked playlists. Social playlists and Warzone are still subject to normal matchmaking rules.

Not that I care too much(I try to never leave matches), but why does it only work in ranked?

Dunno. That’s just how it is. You could try tweeting @joshua_menke, the matchmaking guy, to see if he could tell you the reason.
Hi guys, i am new to the halo forums but i am a halo fan, i played halo 3 and reach for a long time and only just got into halo 5, i have to say, i am happy with how you guys made halo 5 multiplayer, with the boosting, thrust jumping and all the little things add to make this multiplayer very good. However i am not a fan of the increasing in time temp bans for leaving matches, i understand that it is not good sportsmanship to leave a match mid way through for one reason or another and i understand that multiple games left are required to get tempowary banned so the occasional mid way leave wont hurt but sometimes i rage lol, as stupid as it sounds, i rage if i die in a stupid way in infection or if the other team is way too good in big team battle and i leave the match, another reason might be if i’m playing on a map i dont like, as there is no way to back out if you’ve already found the players, and the result of me raging and leaving is me getting tempowarily banned, and at was confused why i was getting banned but them i remember that back in halo reach you would get banned for leaving too many games, and the bans only lasted 10-15 minutes, so it was fine, so i waited the time in halo 5 and kept playing, a couple hours later i left some games some more and got banned again, this time it said 45 minutes, thats a long time i thought and i thought that the tempowary bans must be at 45 minutes the longest time you can be tempowarily banned for, the next day, i’m playing and i quit some more games over the space of about an hour or two and then i was banned again for 3 hours!!! I was worried when i saw that message, seeing if it was right but i waited it out and got back to playing again, now today i was searching for an infection match and saw it was on a map i hated: freakshow so i left the match, i was hoping the dreaded “the banhammer strikes” message wouldnt show up and it didnt to my suprise, about an hour later (i dont remember leaving matches in this time) i accidentally searched for action sack instead of infection, so i left the match and i was hoping so bad that i wouldnt get tempowarily banned again but ofcourse, i was, this ban was a massive 8 hours, and in my opinion a temp ban 30 mins or more is ALOT for a minor non-sportsmanship thing such as leaving matches, save the 8 hour bans for hackers, or people boosing for xp or something, but basically i feel that the bans should be alot less time, i understand the reasoning for the bans and that the bans are trying to stop players from leaving games mid way through but the message still gets across with smaller bans such as 30 minute ones, i love halo, and waiting 8 hours to play it again sucks, why are you making your players who bought the game wait 8 hours for doing something as small as leaving games midwaythrough! Another question i have is does the tempowary ban time ever reset back down to 15 minutes or so, what i mean by that is if i get banned today for 15 minutes, the following ban that i get will increase in time to something like 45 minutes but if i don’t get tempowarily banned for a period of time for example a month, does it reset down to the starting time again?
I can imagine many people have already brought this up but i’m hoping with all the effort i put into this long, long forum post, you guys take this into consideration.

When you quit, you leave your team to play shorthanded. I don’t call that a minor thing. When you quit a lot, then you are making a lot of people upset. The bans are accumulative, the more you quit, the longer the ban. I have not herd of the slate getting wiped clean. Best solution, don’t quit!
