The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

  • Sorry, I didn’t know it wasn’t for both of them - I was just curious because it doesn’t make sense to an outsider how you do it. They can speculate, but that means nothing.I will now refrain from talking about halo waypoint bans on this thread.

Being ban cause you had something to do in rl is stupid like the 36 second ban i got today

I agree, but if it’s that urgent and you have to quit right away you probably shouldn’t be playing an online game anyways.

I came back from college a few days ago and I just got on my account to figure out it was banned permanently from matchmaking. Halo is the only video game I play. Little to say I have no excuses for not changing my auto sign in before I left, but I’m in need of your help to resolve this. I’ve been a competitive halo player for almost 10****years now and have been to events and competed**.** This is my original tag and I worked hard to keep it with good feedback, but my little cousins demolished my record and I’m on “avoid****me” now. If there is anyone that can help me please notify me ASAP.

Your ban was for idling through a match (I can post a video if you’d like.) If you had something to do, you could have easily quit the match. The occasional quit will not result in a ban; it requires a pattern of DNFs for that. A better solution since you were idle for the first second of the match would have been for you to not enter the match however. You can easily back out of matchmaking after a completed match and that way you won’t be a hindrance to your teammates in the following match.

The Halo 5 ban system has nothing to do with the Xbox live reputation system. If you have questions about your reputation; you can find answers to that here. As a reminder you are responsible for what occurs on your account.

No exception. The rules are in place for all of us.No matter the reason-legimate or not.If the rules are bent for one. Then they would have to be bent for all. That’s not right.

We’re just saying it’s annoying to get banned because you had something to do. I personally have never been banned, so it doesn’t affect me much.

How long will a ban be placed on my account then? I got no message from Xbox and I’ve been unable to play all day yesterday continuing on today. Please I need to figure out what is going on with my account! Thanks!

If it’s a reputation issue; it wasn’t a halo 5 ban. You’ll have to follow the link I provided and you should find your answers there.

Would having a bad rep be the cause of me unable to find any multiplayer matchmaking games? Last one, thanks!

Having red reputation does make it harder to find matches; however that has nothing to do with the ban system for Halo 5. It’s simply a consequence of repeated misbehavior on the account.

Thanks a lot! This was a huge help! I’m on my way getting a good rep! Don’t be afraid to shoot me an FR on Xbox live we can game anytime!

> The following FAQ should answer some of your questions about Halo 5 bans. We will update this FAQ as necessary.
>
> **I received an in-game message saying I have been banned. Why?**If you are checking this page because of an in-game message, it is likely that you have been banned for violating the terms of use and/or committing a code of conduct violation. It is also possible, in the case of an especially egregious violation, that your Xbox One system itself is now banned from Matchmaking. The duration of this ban is based on the type, frequency or nature of the committed violation. In most cases, Custom Games will still be available. In extreme cases, they will not.
>
> **How can I tell how long I was banned for?**Ban duration will be shown on the red ban screen as the ban hammer strikes. First offences are generally low and last only a few minutes, but will increase in duration incrementally with each subsequent ban. The ban timer itself displays times as follows -
> **Days : Hours : Minutes : Seconds****What types of actions can result in a ban?**Types of violation include, but are not limited to, the following example actions:
> - Modifying your Xbox One hardware or game software and services in any way. - Idling through games, habitual quitting/suiciding/betraying, or any other type of unsociable and unsportsmanlike behavior. - Impersonating a 343 Industries or Microsoft employee on Xbox LIVE with intent to defraud or cause harm to other players. Why was I banned for winning a match / quitting one match / quitting a custom game? __You weren’t. The ban system runs at least 1 game behind so your ban will have been placed for a previous offence. After completing your next event, whether it is a matchmaking game, custom game, forge session, spectating a friend or viewing theatre, the system will then show you a message telling you that you have been banned. As it takes more than a single offence to earn a ban you will never be banned for leaving one match, it will be multiple offences that have led to a ban being placed on your account.
>
> **I shouldn’t be banned. My brother/sister/cousin/dad/mom/friend must’ve logged on with my account and done bad things. Will you please reverse my ban?**If this is indeed the case, we do understand your frustration. However, it is your sole responsibility to keep your account information secure and not share it with others who would abuse it. We have no way of detecting who is playing with your account, and if your gamertag is caught making naughty, you will be banned. Those are the rules.
>
> **I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?**Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.
>
> **Will posting in this thread guarantee my ban will be lifted and that someone will respond personally to every post?**Unfortunately, no. We simply don’t have enough eyes, ears and typing hands to respond to every single post. However, the community will help keep you honest. You have a public game history for everyone to see. If you post you were banned unjustly, the community is in their rights to check out your history to confirm or deny your claims. Please, just keep it clean.
>
> The purpose of this thread is to keep all questions pertaining to bans in one place. Without a megathread for such questions, the rest of the forum will almost certainly turn into a cavalcade of ban questions.
>
> If you were banned and think you have a case, this is the ONLY thread you should post in. If other moderators see posts pertaining to bans in other threads, they will either be deleted outright or a kind-hearted mod might just move the posts to this thread.
>
> If any users are caught habitually spamming ban threads in other threads, we will consider that a violation of the forum Terms of Use. You will risk being banned here as well. We don’t want to have to ban anyone, but we do want an open, honest and positive place to post about all things Halo, so a thread like this is necessary.

Is there any way to access or view the collated data of offences. I have been banned for a very short period of time however I would like to see what led up to my ban so I can not repeat these actions. I do not count myself as a toxic player or one whom would go out of my way to troll or do something against the terms of service so I am just curious as to why I was banned.

You should have received a "banhammer strikes’ directly to your console which stated the reason for you ban and the length of it. The most common reasons for bans are excessive or a pattern of DNFS (you have 3 in your last 10 so that would be my bet), griefing (excessive suicides, team killing, blocking the path in race), network or matchmaking manipulation, and idling through matches.

I just got DC’d for no reason, and then not even given a ban time, it just says I am. I have no idea how long it is, but this happens all the time for no reason and I hate it

So what i dont understand is why to 2 bans i got were for. Was it for the 2 dnf i got? If so then i should have one for every dnf i got…

Thank you fro replying and answering my question, however I still have one more question. What do you mean by a DNF? does it mean that I left the game? Was kicked? or did not get any kills/bother with the objective? Additionally I did get the ban-hammer strikes message however I received no explanation or reason why just a timer and message saying I was banned. Thank you for responding much appreciated.

DNF means “Did not finish.” The reason or method of leaving the match is irrelevant. The system looks for patterns of behavior when it comes to DNFs.

The message you received would have stated why you were banned. I’d hazard to guess that you dismissed the message without reading it in it’s entirety.

I know that it means did not finish but what I meant by my question was how do that apply to Halo as in what is classed as a DNF.

Any time you do not finish a game it counts as a Dnf.
