The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

I got banned for 24 hrs just because I was busy and that was my third match that I have ever idled through. Why was I banned?

Idling, I can post the video if you’d like? Idling is against the rules set out by 343 (and bungie before them.) This was made clear prior to the release of the game. There isn’t a grace period or a point where you are allowed to break this many rules before the system puts you on a cool down. If this is your first ban than it is likely to be short. You may want to reread the first post in this thread as it has instructions on how to read the ban timer.

You were also idle from the beginning of the match, which means you easily could have backed out of matchmaking rather than idle through the match. Hope this clears things up.

I agree with the people who think the bans are too severe. It’s limiting Halo enjoyment for me. I’m about to just switch to other online fps because it’s too bad. I don’t take the game too serious. It’s fine that some people do. That’s why there should be separate playlists. Seems like ranked and social could be separated with ranked enforcing strict rules and less so on social. The ban rules are wrong. But I don’t expect anyone at 343 to really care. They ruined Halo far worse in so many other ways. I mainly play it for nostalgia now. If I keep getting banned every time I idle out then I’m just going to quit playing for good. It hasn’t fixed much of the problems it’s trying to. People still constantly quit and idle out of games. Probably half of the games I play someone idles out or quits. Makes me wonder, do people just constantly get banned in Halo now? Do people just not care when they get banned? It’s such an inconvenience to me, I’d just rather pop in another game and erase Halo 5: Garbagians.

so i came back after a couple weeks off halo and i come back to find “Matchmaking rules in effect for misconduct”. what does this mean and how could i have a ban that long if i had done nothing wrong in the first place?. need someone to clarify what i could have done to get this.

You most likely done something wrong, like betrayng, ideling or griefing.
The ban system has an delay,so you recived the ban last time you played, but you turned of your console, what resulted that the delay got stopped and the next time you started H5 you recived your ban.

Don’t worry, you’re not banned. Every playlist, even the social ones, has that message (“Matchmaking rules in effect for misconduct”) as a warning to players to not break the rules. Seeing that message does not mean you are banned; it doesn’t even mean you’re in trouble. Every player sees that message on every playlist, whether they are banned or not.

You can tell if you are truly banned because the playlists will be grayed out and unselectable; also, you get a notification saying very clearly that you’ve been banned, along with a timer that tells you the length of the ban.

Getting booted should get u banned. But just leaving for whatever reason shouldn’t. 343 needs to change this bad policy!

Should it not be other way round?
And can you stop spamming in this forum?

A missunderstanding from my side.
But no,you should get punished if you leave,no matter what, you let your team alone and ruin the fun for others,so a ban is okay.

This really helped Thx

> The following FAQ should answer some of your questions about Halo 5 bans. We will update this FAQ as necessary.
>
> **I received an in-game message saying I have been banned. Why?**If you are checking this page because of an in-game message, it is likely that you have been banned for violating the terms of use and/or committing a code of conduct violation. It is also possible, in the case of an especially egregious violation, that your Xbox One system itself is now banned from Matchmaking. The duration of this ban is based on the type, frequency or nature of the committed violation. In most cases, Custom Games will still be available. In extreme cases, they will not.
>
> **How can I tell how long I was banned for?**Ban duration will be shown on the red ban screen as the ban hammer strikes. First offences are generally low and last only a few minutes, but will increase in duration incrementally with each subsequent ban. The ban timer itself displays times as follows -
> **Days : Hours : Minutes : Seconds****What types of actions can result in a ban?**Types of violation include, but are not limited to, the following example actions:
> - Modifying your Xbox One hardware or game software and services in any way. - Idling through games, habitual quitting/suiciding/betraying, or any other type of unsociable and unsportsmanlike behavior. - Impersonating a 343 Industries or Microsoft employee on Xbox LIVE with intent to defraud or cause harm to other players. Why was I banned for winning a match / quitting one match / quitting a custom game? __You weren’t. The ban system runs at least 1 game behind so your ban will have been placed for a previous offence. After completing your next event, whether it is a matchmaking game, custom game, forge session, spectating a friend or viewing theatre, the system will then show you a message telling you that you have been banned. As it takes more than a single offence to earn a ban you will never be banned for leaving one match, it will be multiple offences that have led to a ban being placed on your account.
>
> **I shouldn’t be banned. My brother/sister/cousin/dad/mom/friend must’ve logged on with my account and done bad things. Will you please reverse my ban?**If this is indeed the case, we do understand your frustration. However, it is your sole responsibility to keep your account information secure and not share it with others who would abuse it. We have no way of detecting who is playing with your account, and if your gamertag is caught making naughty, you will be banned. Those are the rules.
>
> **I didn’t do anything wrong, and you can’t prove it. Will you please reverse my ban?**Our automated system builds up a digital case of wrongdoing before any ban is enacted. If you accidentally disconnect a time or two, you won’t get banned. Instead the system looks for patterns that can’t happen accidentally. If the banhammer detects enough wrongdoing, you were doing wrong.

When is this section going to be updated to include FAQ pertaining to the random server hiccups that cause mid game disconnects that result in banhammers?

Excessive disconnects are on the list of ban hammer worthy offenses.

It’s important to us that everyone enjoys their experiences in Arena play. To maintain the quality of the Arena experience and sanctity of competition, a number of rules are in place for all Arena playlists. Halo 5: Guardians is engineered to detect and track the following behavior: - Quitting matches - Betrayals or team killing - Idling (AFK) - Intentional suicides - Excessive disconnectsIf you repeatedly engage in negative behaviors such as the ones listed above, you will receive a ban and be prevented from entering matchmaking. The duration of each ban is dependent on the offense and becomes more severe with each successive infraction, so continually killing your teammates to steal the Sniper Rifle will quickly lead to long timeouts from matchmade play.

If it is an actual hiccup with the server everyone drops from the game. If only you drop from the game it’s on your end.

Really isn’t fair to me when my team quits completely and I am slaughtered the whole match but I stick it out till the last 2 minutes and then I just start jumping off a ledge because I find that more enjoyable than being repeatedly sniped and rocketed to death only to be booted 30 seconds from the end of the round and get banned for griefing myself

On a side note: If I was doing this during a regular match i’d support it fully but when I’m alone vs 4 players…oh well

I have only owned my Xbox and Halo 5 game for 6 days and I have spent the last 2 days banned from playing online. I know I am rubbish at Halo but I do not know what I have done wrong. I cannot find the red ‘banhammer’ to see how long I am banned for. It is very frustrating and frankly, unfair.
How can I find out what caused the ban? And where is the banhammer?

If you didn’t receive a ‘banhammer strikes’ message you haven’t been banned. Try hard resetting your console by pressing and holding down the button on the front of your console until it completely shuts down, wait a few minutes and then boot up the game. You can also try power cycling your router.

Occasionally, when the banhammer strikes., at least for myself. The message appears for one second then just disappears without me even seeing it. Perhaps this happened to Cool Cucumber40.
