The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

I just got banned after getting a notification saying my console had lost connection. This was after the end of a game on one of the end-game loading screen things. Then I go and try to play and it says I’m banned for 30 minutes for “quitting too many matches.” Obviously halo knows I lost connection and didn’t quit if they were the ones that sent me the notification saying that I lost connection! And I don’t even see how I lost connection cuz after exiting the notification I was still completely connected. I quit one match earlier today cuz I had to go to the bathroom urgently and this “connection issue” also happened one other time today, and now I’m banned for 30 minutes. I really wouldn’t care if it was 10 minutes, but it’s so frustrating to be WRONGFULLY banned for so long. Microsoft, please don’t claim that the banhammer is always accurate and doesn’t ban people for connectivity issues, because you literally just did it to me, and to countless other people as this thread proves! Obviously losing connection is completely out of my control so I shouldn’t be banned for it. Now I’m afraid to play because I’m scared this will happen again and I’ll be banned for more than 30 minutes or banned indefinitely.

The “lost connection message” that immediately precedes the ‘banhammer strikes message’ is how your ban is implemented it is not the cause of your ban. In your case you were likely banned due to the fact that 7 of your last 30 matches are DNFs.

But that doesn’t make sense because I got the lost connection message earlier that day without getting banned and many times in the past. I didn’t leave the game or do anything wrong in it, and as I said this happened after the game was finished(in the ending little video) so I wouldn’t even have had the opportunity to be doing anything bad to get me banned lol, so why would they randomly disconnect and ban me? And the reason I have so many of those is cuz I’ve been having connectivity issues. So if I lose connection it gets counted as a DNF and I can get banned for having too many DNFs? My issue is that they specifically claimed I won’t get banned for connectivity issues and only will get banned if I intentionally manipulate things in the game or whatever, but clearly that’s not right

That isn’t correct poor connection is on the list of ban worthy offenses and has been since prior to the release of the game. I was only speaking to the “lost commection” message which immediately precedes the “banhammer strikes” message. Otherwise every dnf counts. If you feel you are having connection issues than you may wish to use the search feature to find tips on improving your connection.

So I got banned for 24 hours for a couple games crapping out on me? - I didn’t go idle the game just quit and kicked me to the menu. This is insane. What happened to Halo? It used to be a fun game.

Funny how the connection concerns ALWAYS falls on the player. wtf

So his lost connections lead to his DNFs - your point? I have a 300MBps download : 25MBps upload internet service and have had many lost connections playing Halo 5 for a couple days. I do not get lost connection messages from any other game.

The occasional disconnect generally won’t trigger a ban. If you disconnect alot, or if you have been banned before for other reasons, then the system may be more sensitive towards you.
If you are disconnecting so often that it and it alone is triggering bans for you, then you need to troubleshoot your connection. It’s not always the player’s fault when their connection goes wonky, but more often than not it is not a 343i server error. Server errors affect more than just one player; if a dedicated server crashes or blips, everyone connected to it would be affected. In the case of your most recent DNFs, they were all cases where not everyone in the game was disconnected, and they were all cases where your performance was not too good. While this doesn’t necessarily mean you quit those games, it is a trend generally correlated with rage quitting or quitting to prevent damage to one’s stats. The behavior that can contribute to bans include: quitting, idling, betraying, suiciding, and excessive disconnecting.
If it truly is just unintentional disconnects causing your DNFs, I recommend doing some basic testing to see what is going on with your connection:
Current ISP (is your ISP the only one in your area? Is it known to have issues connecting to Halo 5 servers?)
Up/down speeds (what does your ISP say it should be, and what does speedtest say it actually is?)
Ping & Packet loss (measure here, and note that you’ll need to update Flash Player and Java, and don’t use Chrome)
Latency with Microsoft Azure servers (probably where the Halo 5 servers are; you can check here, and you can also test up/down speeds to the Azure servers if you want)

Also, don’t post multiple times in a row; that’s considered spamming. You can edit your posts if you feel like adding additional thoughts before someone else has posted.

I believe you are referencing this match. You have 7 deaths and 0 kills. In order to be kicked for idling you have to have no controller input for about three minutes. Idling has been a ban worthy offense for quite a long time going back to bungie days. I’ve bookmarked the film for that match and I’ll review it when I can. I’ll edit the post if an when I determine if you were idle.

In order to receive a 24 hour ban you would need to have been banned quite a few times. Initial bans are short and they increase with each further offense. If you think you misread the ban hammer messages time you should review the first post in this thread as it has a guide to how the time is displayed.

The player losing connection to the server can be a DNF which will contribute to the possibility of getting a ban. However, a lot of people are confused by the method bans are implemented. They are generally on a 1 match delay. It tends to work something like this.

  • Player has ‘last straw’ match where he does something ban worthy. (quitting, losing connection, griefing, idling etc.) - Player plays another match. - At the end of that match player is forcibly disconnected from the server and notified of that. “Lost connection message” - “Ban hammer strikes” message with the cause and the length of the players ban is received. This leads to a lot of people who aren’t familiar with the way the ban system assuming that the ‘lost connection message’ they received immediately prior to the ‘ban hammer strikes’ message is the source of their ban rather than a step in its implementation. I was attempting to clarify that.

Hello 343…

I have never cheated in my life, I am on the halo feedback panel for Halo5 and I have been an avid fan of Halo since the beginning.
Due to random disconnects (server issues / no other games have this problem) I have been subject to matchmaking rules put in place for alleged misconduct.

Please can you review my account? I do not understand why I am being penalised for issues outside my control.
To confirm I am getting disconnected through no fault of my own.

Thanks
Kbone27

Matchmaking misconduct does not necessarily mean cheating. Matchmaking misconduct includes all of the following: quitting, idling, betraying, too much suiciding, too much disconnecting.
Considering that your last 5 games (Warzone and Arena) are all DNFs, it seems like you are having some major connection issues today. Players who disconnect too often are issued temp bans in order to help keep the multiplayer experience consistent for the majority of players. Even if the disconnects are beyond your control, if your connection cannot be maintained then it is better for the general player population that you get a timeout, during which time whatever connection trouble you have subsides. Disconnects also lead to a ban because the system cannot necessarily tell the difference between someone who disconnects unintentionally and someone who pulls their ethernet cable to get out of a bad game without quitting normally.
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take:
Current ISP (is your ISP the only one in your area? Is it known to have issues connecting to Halo 5 servers?)
Up/down speeds (what does your ISP say it should be, and what does speedtest say it actually is?)
Ping & Packet loss (measure here, and note that you’ll need to update Flash Player and Java, and don’t use Chrome)
Latency with Microsoft Azure servers (probably where the Halo 5 servers are; you can check here, and you can also test up/down speeds to the Azure servers if you want)

I have been unable to play any halo 5 multiplayer or coop with “Matchmaking rules in effect for misconduct” present for what I think has almost been a week. From what I read the first time ban should have only been a few minutes. I have played something around 15-16 games in all and yet I have not been able to play for almost a week now. What the Heck! Only 5 of the 16 matches were in the last few months and I have maybe accidentally killed one of my teammates when a grenade bounced off the wrong wall, I don’t purposefully suicide, and I may have idled for a total of a 1 minute to take a picture of a cool energy sword I got, but even then I wasn’t killed of feeding kills. I am almost positive that I haven’t quit any of the games. Where do I go to talk to someone about this completely unreasonable ban that I have gotten. Do kill steals count toward a ban? Because if they do I might as well return this game since I’m good and my teammates always suck.

Your problem sounds less like a ban and more like your Xbox Live ran out. However, I find it interesting that as I’m writing this post, your gamertag is listed as in a co-op campaign game in Halo 5. Also, 19 hours before this post, you unlocked a co-op campaign achievement. So it looks like you are at least able to play co-op.
Did you get a message specifically saying you’ve been banned? The “Matchmaking rules in effect for misconduct” message appears on every playlist all the time as a warning to people not to make trouble. Your game history doesn’t seem indicative of any overt rule breaking, so I’m thinking it’s something other than a ban. Can you get into Forge or Custom games? How have you done recent co-op campaign when before you said you could play matchmaking or co-op for almost a week?

@Chimera30
Respectfully this is a disconnection issue that has nothing to do with my xbox, my ISP, my router.
I know this because it happened at my old address (different ISP and router) and no other games are affected.
I like halo, I like playing halo normally. I have never done any of the following intentionally: quitting, idling, betraying, too much suiciding.

This is a problem with the Halo servers period - that is affecting (for whatever reason) a small group of players.
Strangely in the evening yesterday I had a good 3 hours of playing with no problem. The servers are crap, or there is a bug in the code that exploits certain ISP’s.
Either way, I think the majority of people affected are being pretty calm considering.

I thank you for your response and your input, but ultimately this is not my end. This is 343 / Microsofts problem and it really needs sorting out.

The xbox live reporting system doesn’t have any effect on the ban system implemented specifically in Halo 5. Reports on xbox live can lead to bans from Microsoft, but that is a whole other ball of wax.

My banned screen says:
At least one player in your fire team has been banned from Halo 5:Gaurdians
Can someone tell me what this means, and how long I am banned? It doesn’t give a time.
Thanks!
I’m not sure why it’s showing my brother’s gamer tag instead of mine. I’m Gloomyriver84

If Waypoint is showing someone else’s gamertag, it means they are currently logged in. You should log out and log in with your own credentials.

You don’t know how to sign out? In the top right corner of the site, you should see your profile icon and gamertag. Click on it to reveal a drop down menu. At the bottom of the menu, it says “Sign Out”. Click that to sign out, then you can log back in with your own gamertag.
