The official Halo 5 "Why was I banned?" thread

> Hi, I’ve been banned for at least 48 hours and I can’t see how long I have left. My gamertag is Vicero, can you at least tell me how long I have to wait?

As far as I know the only the ban time is stated is during the initial "Banhammer Strikes’ message.

I keep getting banned? First I just left a few games cause I couldn’t figure out how to mute players… OK lesson learned then today someone starts lagging don’t think it was me but OK, game ended and all the sudden I’m banned for an hour… This is a bit excessive I didn’t get much of a warning this would happen yesterday and today I got none what the hell… Please stop or change this policy… Seriously not cool

You have 17 DNFS in 116 matches. That is the reason you have been banned. I’m not sure what kind of warning you were expecting as there is already a ‘matchmaking rules are in effect for misconduct’ warning whenever you select a playlist and the offenses that were deemed ban worthy (Afking/Griefing/Quitting/Poor Connection) were set forth prior to the release of the game. If you finish your matches, don’t grief, or afk then you won’t get banned.

I am not banned, but I am worried that I eventually will be due to situations outside of my control. I was playing Grifball with my squad last night, against other players, and after three matches I got kicked out of the match with the message “Et tu, Brute?”. Now, I know what that means. But what I don’t understand is how anyone expects no one to never accidentally kill their own teammates in Grifball. It’s an unrealistic expectation. I completely understand the rules against betrayals. I just don’t think that it should apply to Grifball due to how easy it is to make that mistake. I even apologized every single time I accidentally killed a teammate, and no one was upset. There were even times when I swung at an enemy while my teammates were rushing in as well and I kept worrying that I had hit one of them by accident. Now, I am not just mindlessly swinging the hammer around. I really do try to pay attention to my surroundings. But the nature of Grifball puts all of us in really close proximity to each other.

I am now afraid of playing Grifball again, or something such as an internet disconnect or server issue elsewhere putting a ban on me. I’ve never once quit a game, only ever got kicked out due to internet or server issues (mostly server. My internet has been pretty stable lately, actually). And it’s sad, because I find Grifball to be really fun and amusing.

So…yeah, I’m really afraid I’ll get banned through no deliberate fault of my own. =(

How many teamkills do you have and have you played an other round after said round?

I really don’t know how many accidental kills I made. But after my teammates finished that match of Grifball, we moved on to one round of Warzone Firefight and then I went to bed. So it was a warning, but still kicked me out of that one Grifball match. I just didn’t want to exacerbate the issue by playing more Grifball. It’s gotten me really nervous, now, and I worry I will hesitate to swing my weapon in Grifball in the future for fear of getting more warnings and then a ban…

Nothing to worry be just carefull the next few times.
The system seems to be very forgivable for grifball.

Don’t let the constant claims of disconnections worry you to much. A few disconnections, quits, and power outages happen to us all and most of us never end up being banned. My hypothetical 10% model is still holding firm.

As for grifball I have mixed feeling about betrayal booting…but you do need to have quite a few betrayals before someone gets the option to boot (between 3 and 5 I believe) If you get booted multiple times you will get a short griefing ban. Personally I think it’s made me a more careful player when I am in the mood for grifball. The first one is only a couple minutes.

I did play about three Grifball matches in a row with my teammates, so I am unsure if the warning/boot was all of those games combined or just the last game. Either way, it worries me. I’m not intentionally trying to smack my allies.

I know in Reach the ban system was changed so that betrayals (and damage to your teammates in general) was tracked over a period and how much or how little you did made the boot option more or less likely to appear. I don’t know if that is the case now or not, however the system is allegedly the same so it seems likely.

My GT is : FromageOChips
I was banned for 9h but the game is telling me that I’m still banned. What is this?
Does it means that I was perma bann for bad connection?

I assume by bad connection you mean DNFS? Is that the case? What did your ‘banhammer strikes’ message say exactly? When did your ban take effect? I haven’t seen anyone be (or complain about being permanently banned for something like DNFS.

So I got a 9 hour bann alright, and every time I would reconnect the game would tell me how long I had to wait. So it was time for diner and the game told me “16:45” approximately. When I came back 20 minutes later I would not receive any message and the game would tell me " a member of your fireteam has been banned from the halo 5 guardians servers"

Give your console a hard rest and make sure you aren’t set to appear offline

I have never been banned in Halo 5, but I often wonder why all Halo devs ever to have existed have never removed friendly fire from certain game types like Griffball. I mean really, it’s almost as if they want to ban people.

Griffball should just be renamed Grief Ball because it can’t be played without betrayals galore. I only played it a few times because I had teammates purposely running in front of me when I slammed my hammer, trying to get me booted. This is exactly what made me sell Halo Reach when it first came out; when people learned of the new booting system (you get insta-banned for different durations based on amounts of betrayals and boots), they all started trolling in every single match made game trying to jump in front of their own teammates’ bullets and sword lunges in various game types, though Living Dead was like the #1 mode for betrayal trolls. In the first month of playing, I remember I got banned for like a week because two guys kept running in front of me when I was shooting at zombies. I remember coming to the forums and e-mailing the company about it and they literally did not care and basically said stop team killing. I even had vids to show what the trolls were doing and Bungie did not care. This honestly made me dislike Bungie forever because I had been one of the biggest Halo/Bungie fans forever and then they legit did not care that their broken system kept banning everyone for no reason.

I remember going onto the forums when Reach was the latest Halo and people were complaining that they weren’t able to find matches or were getting matched in super laggy lobbies and it was later determined that this was happening because so many people were getting banned daily that there was always a lack of people to match up with (some for minutes, some days, some way more). I remember playing big team and infection with friends and we all wound up getting banned after about 2-3 matches one night because team trolls kept running in front of our shots and nades…people were literally running after our nades and sitting on them. We all got banned for like 48hrs because of this garbage.

Sorry for the wall of text, but it’s time for video game companies to come out of the dark ages of ban concepts and start being more realistic. Some of the things people are getting banned for in Halo 5 is just dumb and I haven’t even been banned once so you can’t say I’m whining. I got disconnected a few times in a row with an error message saying something about official servers losing connection or experiencing errors, so I would be PO’d if I got banned for this like others have because it is not our faults at all. I honestly came back to Halo when I heard Bungie sold the rights off to Microsoft and 343i because I figured finally a new set of hands would be managing the game and its rules. Hopefully 343i gets smart and institutes new methods because the current system is a huge remnant of Bungie and I do not like that what so ever.

Friendly fire is necessary for grifball, it breaks the game if you don’t have it on. I have mixed feeling about betrayal booting, because A: accidents happen and B: There are plenty of trolls running around smashing there teammates with a gravity hammer.

As for the bold, you can’t really claim people are trolling when you fail to make sure your shot is clear. I have had people wait till I fired a splaser or rocket and jump in front of it in warzone so they could kill me and take the weapon, but it’s a pretty rare occurrence. It seems more like you’re trying to blame others for that fact that you aren’t careful.

Im going to say this now as up until now nobody has said it. I frequent this forum just to help out as the god awful ban system is rightly so annoying many players. Now what is the point in this thread? Sure people who are rightly banned will post saying how they bought the game and shouldnt be, but there will be some who are unjustly banned. Has anyone actually heard of anyone being unbanned? I certainly havent and to my knowledge 343i dont even frequent this forum.

This forum is no longer a ‘voice your concerns and we’ll decide on what to do’ forum. Its either a ‘we hate halo 5’ forum or a forum to help with connectivity issues.

If anyone has ever heard of a ban being reversed please i encourage you to say so. It might give hope to some of the users hoping for help.
