Losing connection to a game unintentionally (i.e. leaving a game without quitting) does not directly result in a ban, but it does count as a DNF. Get too many DNFs and the banhammer can trigger. Generally, if you only get disconnected every once in awhile, you probably won’t get banned. But if you occasionally disconnect and you also occasionally quit on purpose, then the system might see your DNFs as a trend, and issue a ban. Best thing to do is to never quit on purpose so that, if you do ever unintentionally disconnect, it’s not likely to trigger a ban. If you disconnect so often that you are getting repeated bans from those alone, then you may want to troubleshoot your connection.

Because the game won’t be able to tell if you “genuinely” lost connection to the game, or if your Ethernet cable was magically pulled out, or if your router/modem was reset.
I’ve been banned for no good reason. The given reason was that I left too many games, this is false as I only left two games one was because of a team killer in war zone and another because the servers just imploded. If you’re going to give a snarky line like “the banhammer STRIKES” then at least have the right information.

I don’t understand why I was banned yesterday. It was short 9 minutes or something. My game history shows the last game I played as DNF which is because it kicked me out saying I was banned. Looked through my history today and I don’t have any DNFs this month I didn’t go back further. Why would I be banned?

When you go to your game history, use the drop down menu and select “all”. That will show Wz and arena games together, you have 6 Dnf’s in August, but you play a lot of games. I wouldn’t think that would be enough to get you banned unless you had been previously banned. The system doesn’t reset and it remembers all Dnf’s.

Well for starters, everyone else who has the same exact post that I do and experiencing the same problem. However, on 3 or 4 occasion I complete a game but then the game freezes and I have no option but to reboot. Once I turn it back on, I get the ban hammer for not completing my game

That suggests some threshold where, eventually, getting disconnected too often would result in a ban. Similarly, 343i’s ban policy states that excessive disconnects will get you banned (here, under the section “The Banhammer Strikes!”). So it is differently worded but similar meaning. So actually, for both companies, there is a threshold where internet performance does eventually start to influence bans. In fact, Bungie continued this implementation with Destiny: players that consistently show red bar connections in Destiny’s PvP get temporarily banned from PvP until they can better their connection.
not so similar: they can argue that bungie has not inflicted unnessasary bans to people with occasional disconnects, while 343i policy has. I mean if a person comes to you and present a ban with 3 disconnects in the last three days, you would say the ban is fair, but not under Bungies’ policy. This is the exact reason no one really complained about the bungie ban hammer because it was fair. 343 needs to revise this ban policy immediately. 343i’s strict ban hammer policy is more suitable for a MLG environment where as Bungie’s system is more suitable for the average community, which only bans when it detect some type of real manipulation and not just kicking everyone off that only have a few disconnects.
People have been banned for 24 and a few hours here and there. There is no need to ban someone for that long. My friend got banned because we both left a game that wasn’t fair and evenly matched. It wasn’t a fun experience. He then goes to say, “I’ve been banned for an hour.” That’s so stupid. Make it 15-20 mins not an Hour. That’s just dumb.

Well, Bungie doesn’t use an automated system for banning anymore. As for the previous system Bungie used with banning in Halo, no one (not even you) knows the parameters they had set up. Sure, they were probably less strict, but the wording of their policy only states that “occasional” disconnects won’t get you banned. We don’t know what “occasional” meant to Bungie; it certainly seems that they were more lax with the term than 343i. But, Halo no longer belongs to Bungie. It belongs to 343i, and if they want to be stricter with what they define as “occasional” disconnects, then that’s their prerogative. We as customers don’t really have any authority on the matter. We can voice our opinions, boycott their products even, but ultimately if they don’t want to change the banhammer, they won’t. And judging by their lack of response to all these ban posts, I’d say they have no intention of changing it. Which leaves players with really only a couple of options: either we follow the rules 343i has set in place, or we don’t. Those rules happen to have a clause about disconnects, and whatever 343i defines as “excessive” will get a player banned. The threshold for what they call “excessive” may be pretty low, but again, it’s their property, they can run it how they want. They don’t really need to change anything; if they’re smart they’ll listen to the customer base, but they don’t have to. And considering 343i never responds in this thread or about bans in general, I don’t think they plan to change the banhammer any time soon.
Okay I’m not saying that all the bans are unfair or anything like that. A lot of them make sense but when i’ve paid money (Yuh know that thing we all work hard for) and I can’t even play multiplayer over what? A few to many accidental suicides or leaving a game like -Yoink- me that just doesn’t make sense. So I’m here trying to see if anyone else feels like I do so we can change this crap. Like why can’t it just be a kick from the game and a removal of anything that’s happened due to that players ignorance? But no that’s too difficult for are friends at halo. They gotta take the easy way out and ban their customers for two hours. This one feature is ruining the game for myself and im sure many others. So seriously halo I’m asking you as earnestly as I can. Can you please for the love of halo just -Yoink- off?

I’m not sure were you are leading with this conversation… It is not a fact the two policies are the same and it is fact that the two policies are different. To draw similarities is acceptable but there is a distinct difference between the two policies, you agree? yes. That is why I call for a revision of this ban hammer system. Sure, 343 can do what they want with halo5 but the decision they make could have an impact on the halo community.
I had an interesting thing happen to me yesterday - I had been playing multiple games yesterday (stayed home from work sick, had nothing else to do). Towards the end of the day, My internet became a little laggy. It just started with rubber banding, or things not loading properly. I stuck it out, know that eventually it would either get better or worse. After about 5 or 6 games of this happening, I decided to restart my router and Xbox. I finished the game I was in, left to the main menu, closed the game and then shut down the console. I then reset my router as well.
After everything came back up, I got on and started a game. I had no problems whatsoever. I played another, with a lag spike here and there, and towards the end I was fully disconnected. After that game (and after I got a stable internet connection) I was banned for 10 minutes (nothing too big a deal, I’m more posting this as a question). To my understanding, the ban hammer doesn’t take into account the most recently played game unless the Halo 5 game itself had been restarted. I’ve never disconnected before, and according to the Bungie/343i banhammer (See CopperySinger5 post above) a single disconnect or lag/latency issues themselves should not resort in a ban.
I’m not asking to get compensation, more looking for information to know what happened and how I can prevent it in the future - along with reporting a possible bug if that is the case.

You do have some other DNFs in your history (one on 8/9, one on 8/16, one on 8/18), so technically you haven’t only quit/disconnected one time. That being said, you certainly don’t seem to have a habit of not finishing games. In terms of the guidelines, the only thing I can think of is that if you were griefing other players, or idling, or suiciding, then that disconnect could have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. If you weren’t doing any of those things, then I’m not sure why you got a ban. The guidelines do say that a single disconnect isn’t grounds for a ban, but the banhammer isn’t perfect; it might have been overly sensitive towards you. As for preventing future bans, I would say just play normally and follow the rules. For the majority of players, that’s all one needs to do to not get banned. If connection issues flair up again, maybe troubleshoot your connection.

This may be a dumb question - how do I check if I was DNF? Because to my knowledge yesterday was the only time I’ve disconnected…
EDIT: Rather, is there an easy way to check the DNF?

There is not an easy way. You just have to go to your game history and go through page after page, tallying any DNFs you see.

Awesome, thank you very much! I looked through them just now, not sure about one of them (someone from my Spartan company was in that game and we actually finished the game together so we aren’t sure what’s up with that one. Thank you for the help though!
There should never be any reprisal for Lag, Lost Connections or just plain needing to “QUIT” the game. In the end this is just another “do as I say” or we will ban you scenario.
Electrical storms, power outage (this can occur for various reasons not just weather), emergencies (family or otherwise) & crappy groups. Non of these are any reason to be banned.
In the end, these are ridiculous reason to “BAN” someone. Therefore this needs to be re-evaluated & on a personal note removed.
Cheating (by any means in which to gain an advantage) I understand them lowering the ban hammer. These other reasons are not.
343 needs to seriously rethink what is “unacceptable” behavior.
Just received a 7 hour ban for finishing a match and the game crashing in the post game stats… I thought it was 7 minutes at first, but it has been 20+ since the ban and i’m still unable to play Arena -.-

And how is the banhammer going to account for all of these scenarios? It’s not omniscient. All it knows is that you were once in the server, and now you’re not.
Quitting affects everyone in the game. Your team is now a man down in a situation where they could win with equal players. This lowers the quality of experience of other people.
You aren’t ban for one quit, so whatever emergencies that could happen won’t ban you (unless for some reason they are frequent enough. And at the end of the day, you are only banned for a finite amount of time, it’s not a permaban, something cheating would cause.
