The number one problem with Challenges (and not enough people are talking about)

TLDR: Infinite challenges encourage solo play, not party/team/friends play.

We all know about the following issues:

  • Some of them are too hard

  • Some of them require specific game modes that aren’t selectable

  • There’s not enough swaps to get through

While the above have all been talked about ad nauseam, there’s one point that doesn’t get enough attention.

MCC gives everyone the same challenges each week. This lets you play with your friends, and hop around and play the same playlists, work on the same tasks, no matter what!
Halo Infinite encourages you to play solo, because the challenges you have won’t be the same as your friend(s).

I understand there is some value in having randomized decks. The solution I can offer would be to put in more daily challenges.
This way, 343 could decide to make either the weekly or daily challenges the same for EVERYONE - this would encourage you to stay in a party and actually play with your friends, at least part of your night.

I’d much rather this than having to tell my friends “Sorry guys, I need to go earn 7,500 score in FFA - see you in an hour or two.”

Yup. I basically play by myself if I want to get my challenges done. I try to knock them out on Tuesday and Wednesday so I can play whatever my friends want on the weekends.

The FFA challenges are bad.

I hope the Last Spartan Standing mode isn’t just a modified FFA that prevents you from playing it with your friends.

Yep. I miss the days when my wife, my kid, my bro, and I could party up and earn our MCC seasonal points and challenges together.

I think you’re slightly exaggerating the issue. I have two buddies I play with regularly. Every 3-4 games we check what playlists would be best for everyone’s challenges, and we just bounce.

Most times you can find a playlist that everyone can make some progress in, and (rarely) sometimes you have to take turns progressing.

Be careful asking for set challenges for everyone though. It works out in MCC somewhat without hugely impacting the game. BF5’s weekly challenges were the same for everyone (including the order you progtesed through them sequentially) and it had a dramatic impact on games. We’re talking about servers being 95% of players being the same class spamming the same action all week. I’m happy Infinite doesn’t have that issue

I feel you on the double edged sword, which was why I offered the idea of expanding daily challenges.
Then 343 could either make the dailies OR the weeklies the same for everyone.

This is A problem, but not the the number one problem and not even close. And this is only a problem sometimes. Most of the time I get my challenges done playing with friends. But I wholeheartedly agree it would feel a lot better to complete specific challenges with my friends. But then the problem arises of “Ok, I just got my 5,000 player score in team slayer, are you done yet?” or “I’ve already done that this week, I’m way ahead of you on the list.”

You are forgetting the repetativeness of challenges. You can have multiple challenges that basicly ask you to do the same thing, sometimes even on the same playlist (but then often you can’t do them on the same time)

I for instance have
FFA:

  • complete 5 games
  • get 2000 score
  • get 5000 score
    Team Slayer:
  • 50 kills
    Ranked:
  • 2000 score
  • 5000 score
    Fiesta:
  • 2000 score
    Quick Play
  • 7500 score
    Tactical Slayer
  • 5000 score
    Overall:
  • 2000 score

It’s basicly the same challenge, but most for a different playlist and with lost of kills to do… That is just getting extremely boring and it also makes it that often you can only do 1 challenge at a time, because the other challenges are for anothing playlist. This makes it so it takes realy long to complete the challenges and people often don’t feel like doing them, because they can’t play what they want to play then, or they can only do half of their challenges, wich doesn’t earn them anything (especially if they already completed the battle pass).

I get that they want to make an incentive for players to play some non-popular playlists, but if the majority of the challenges are only “play/get kills in this mode/list”, then it’s not even a challenge and it propably makes people only dislike those gamemodes, because they feel like a punishment to them.

I couldn’t agree more.
I kind wish we had SWAPS and EXCHANGES

SWAPS would actually swap a current challenge for one of our upcoming challenges - and EXCHANGES would work as our existing swaps work.

Not that I’m trying to give 343 more monetization ideas, but I honestly think if we could re-arrange our decks it would be better.

I despise the challenge system. It forces you to play game modes you simply do not want to play. Why are so many challenges fiesta based?! Seriously, every other challenge is fiesta, after 5 whole weeks purely focussed on fiesta. Enough.

And now I’m grinding through free for all games. I hate free for all. Why not just have challenges where you actually just play the game and can achieve them in every playlist, or at least a sub group (eg. Slayer, objective, BTB)

If we were able to choose which four challenges to progress at a time, this would also reflect how the BP progression works. Being able to choose and swap out, would be a great mechanic to tighten up this area of the game.

The FFA mode in general is just bad in this game. That has more to do with the maps being too big though. I spend far more time looking for people than actually fighting…

Smaller maps would only make me dislike FFA more to be honest.

But one thing that realy makes FFA bad is that there are people spawning right next to the powerweapon on 2 maps, so it’s already an very uneven start. On Recharge someone spawns next to the sword/hammer, on Bazaar someone spawns next to the rocket/cindershot. Bazaar is also bad because someone spawns out in the open in the marketplace, so if you get killed and respawn there, you will instantly be shot and often from multiple sides. Often that leads to a spawnkill.

God I hate fiesta. Constant fiesta challenges and events is probably what turned me off playing the game these last few months.

The challenge system in literally every other shooter I can think of just gives you a boost of xp.
THAT is what the challenge system should do.

The last few weeks weren’t that bad, but this week was just horrible. I felt like I was constantly going from fiesta to quickplay, to ffa, to team slayer, to tactical slayer. There were hardly any challenges I could do at the same time.

This whole challenge system with FOMO weekly rewards needs to go. If all challenges were up all the time, it can be completed in a couple of hours and AFTER that you can team up with friends. But being able to only do 4 at the time and are probably for 4 different gametypes is just so frustrating. After that is done I’m usually burnt out to play more. And all my friends are still playing Halo 5, so no teaming up with friends for me. :joy:

Then return to MCC. Just like some people wish to return to monke.

well one of the problems are the reason the other two are as such. 343 designed it speecifically for you to BUY more challenge swaps. hard, annoying, bs, and rng based challenges makes it all the more likely for people to do so… meaning more money

Oh yeah,

Had one last night that was “kill enemy defending their zone”.

This was me: literally watched the eney take my zone had captured, waited til they captured it, and then killed them.

At this point i then let them control all zones so i could knock out more enemies in the zones.

Ultimately causing our team to lose the match.

This is the problem with your challenge system.
