4 months ago, 343 added “easyanticheat-x64.so” to the gamefiles which is required to run EAC on Linux. Since April this file has only caused more problems because they never actually enabled it so as a result you would just get stuck in an endless load on the EAC launcher as it tried to communicate with the servers.
With the recent update however, instead of a slow-moving progress bar, it goes from 0 to 100 really quick and then… The game crashes.
Checking the launcher logs, instead of nothingness or an error, it says these beautiful words: “Easy Anti-Cheat successfully loaded in-game” (it did not do this before).
Although the game crashes, this is great news and will likely be fixed in a few days, if it hasn’t been fixed already (in Proton GE or unpublished Proton Experimental).
Soon playing native MCC on the go with the Steam Deck will probably be reality.

That’s good news. I hope they actually get it working and actively support MCC on Linux going forward.
IF this isn’t a false positive, it’s all in the hands of the Proton maintainers.
I suspect that the reason for the crash is that Proton EAC Runtime needs to be updated (I believe it was for every other EAC game), I’m updating it on my main desktop (running Arch) to do some more digging on it and at least get some more error messages (can’t launch Steam from terminal on SteamOS apparently).
Managed to launch it on my desktop with Proton Experimental (bleeding edge) and EAC enabled, but once I get ingame I get an EAC popup that says “hash catalogue not found”.
Umm yeh good luck if can get it working. I recall the previous update I could get the game working on Steam Deck with EAC turned off but the sound was completely broken and this recent update made it completely unplayable so hopefully it get’s fixed soon.
I wish 343 would strike while the iron is hot on these things. Offering Steam Deck support might entice a load of new people to try the game.
It really does seem like the right thing to do. The inevitable wave of opinion pieces with the headline, “Playing The Master Chief Saga On The Go Is As Epic As It Sounds.” Is just free publicity.
I’m personally interested in trying out Linux myself, but I would seriously give it the old college try if I could play Halo on it.
