The New Pelican

Here is the classic Pelican that we know and love and have seen crashing dozens of times throughout the Bungie Halo games;

Classic Pelican.

It’s got smooth lines, a rugged believable look, it looks aerodynamic to a point and above all else it looks good.

Here is thew new Pelican;

New Pelican

It’s… yeah. It’s hard to imagine that thing lumbering through the sky.

What do you guys think of the new Pelican compared with the old one? What do you think of it in terms of pure design? Is it good looking? Is it an eyesore? Did it need changing from the classic design into this new one? Why did the Pelican change when the Scorpion or Ghost or Banshee didn’t?

That cockpit is… Yucky.

Neither look like they should be capable of flight, but does it really matter? No.

The Halo Reach Pelican is by far my favorite Pelican design. I honestly don’t care for this new design too much but considering it’s possibly updated with Forerunner inspired tech, it’s probably pretty sweet. I just hope that the Reach Pelican still exists in the Universe and hasn’t been completely replaced by this design and the new one is designed for a unique role or something like that.

I kind of like it.

Every time I look at it I can’t help but think of this guy.

Really, there’s a difference!?!

I mean aside from this one and the Police one in ODST, I’ve really never noticed anything different about them other than the advancement in graphic technology.

If the galaxy (from planetside 2) can get in the air, so can this thing. They look pretty similar

I LOVE it, reminds me of bees which also shouldn’t be able to fly, but they can, so… IT’S A BEE WITH GUNS!!!

Thats what I like about Halo, the designs keep changing.

Not a huge difference but enough of one that I think the Reach one was the Best.

Halo 3

Reach

Just saying, the Halo 4 pic you have is the Pelican Gunship (hence the turrets on the side) instead of the Pelican Dropship (the other Pelican). Not that it makes a big difference besides the turrets.

In my opinion, the new Pelican(s) look a bit more… bulbous (spelled right?). More defined edges and curves, which gives off a somwhat odd appearance compared to past interations. But it is still recognizable as a Pelican and I don’t think it’ll be a big deal. The cockpit looks a bit odd, but I can live with that.

Larger thrusters?
CHECK

More fluid design?
CHECK

Air intakes that actually take in enough air for plausible operation of the 02 requiring thrusters?
CHECK

Bulbous Hind-esque cockpit fitting of a VTOL?
CHECK

The new Pelican is essentially a helicopter without rotors. I love it.

Also, you showed the gunship variant of the Pelican. The one meant to kill things.
The transport variant does not have the ventral mounted cannon nor the side gunner seats.

Yeah I agree. The Reach Pelican is just… right somehow.

I would just love to know what 343is thought process is regarding this new design. They seem to have gone down the nonsensical aesthetic route, as if you really look closely at the new design you see that so much of it doesn’t make sense. Like how the cockpit now has an external ladder, or that there are so many air intakes, or that it now suddenly needs extra Harrier jumpjet style air ducts.

It’s a mess of a design, with elements from the old Pelican, Hind gunship, Harrier Jumpjet all mashed into one incoherent lump.

You must be joking.

The only problem is its just so bulky.

The old design had too small of air intakes for the thrusters that required O2.

And the prior design’s hovering never made any sense. The thrusters were ALWAYS angled which would have pushed the pelican forward yet didn’t. Atleast with this one it has enough thrusters to offset it’s mass.

It’s called Lifting Body Principles. Technically, NO pelican design would be able to fly in atmosphere, but then again, how was this able to? The body of the Pelican (not the wings) provides the majority of the lift needed for flight

Also, the new Pelican’s design is alot more aerodynamic than in past Halos (seeing how Halo 4 is aiming alot for a “functional” look than past games) the New Pelican’s cockpit reminds me of this

I think were just looking at it from a bad angle.

But as long as it looks like a pelican, I dont mind.

I think that the picture of the halo 4 pelican is a little dicey… it’s at the angle where you can’t really see the length of it… I bet though that if it were in motion or if you were looking from the side you would see a biiig difference.
