The new armor/artistic direction.

I’ve noticed a large bit of the community on here is upset about the artistic direction 343i has taken with Halo 4. My question is: why? It seems like 343i is trying to take a much more mature approach artistically. The new Spartans for example; the Spartans in Reach looked like LEGO’s, overly bulky in all the wrong places and the armor in 3 looked great, but didn’t fit the description of ‘super-soldier’ in my opinion. I love the new armor, it looks powerful while retaining agility. I could imagine a Spartan in GEN2 MJOLINR running 30 mph to crush an alien skull with a kick which I can’t honestly say I felt in the previous armor iterations.

Now, I feel that the artistic approach to the Jackals and everything else looks fantastic, but I could understand why some fans might be upset. Anyways, I’m not trying to flame and I respect everyone’s opinion so here’s mine.

I think the direction 343 are taking with the art is amazing!

I know spartan 4’s are supposed to be more agile than anything but imo… I think they look scrawny… and a bit oddly bulky in the back…

Well most people are complaining either about A. the Sniper, or B. the Covenant.

And they have reason to complain about those two, the covenant looks like brainless caveman aliens and the Sniper, although they partly fixed it, still looks kind of bad.

The Spartan armor looks nice. My only issue is that their heads look a little big for their bodies, and the helmets themselves have pretty bad designs. They look like a lot of past Halo helmets got mushed together.

I agree entirely. The Jackals, the GEN2, and Chief’s armor look better than they ever have!

But I think environmentally it all looks fantastic

Only thing that bugs me a little bit is the jackal design but that’s about it

I’m not really annoyed with their artistic designs. They look good (IMO)

Of course, not everyone is going to agree with me on that.

I think the Sniper looks phenomenal. It captures what the NTW-20 that it’s based on represents: power. Touching out thousands of yards to nail an elite or demolish an engine block. The Sniper looks like a tank; a true anti-material rifle.

I also think the Covenant looks great. Seems as though 343i wanted to show just how much they’re falling apart since the Prophets were defeated and the new designs are meant to capture the original ferocity that Halo: CE had.

I want the Rogue helmet back.

Some of the helmets look quite bad and the Jackals look a bit weird but other than that it doesn’t look bad. I like how the Sniper looks now compared to the E3 version.

I liked both Halo 3’s and Halo Reach’s armor.

But the Halo 4 armor looks a little bit weird to me. Not sure how I can explain it. But it is okay. The Master Chief’s armor looks amazing to me and I am sure that we will have enough variety in the armory to choose the perfect looking armor for us.

I feel as though 343i got together and played the Crysis series before they began developing, which is a good thing. The Nanosuit looks awesome so why not? I think the helmets seen so far look awesome, with the exception of HAZOP.

I agree. In Halo 2-3, the spartans just looked like really tall guys in armor.
In Halo Reach, the spartans were sort of fat looking imo. The Halo 4 spartans look just right.

I like the look of the halo 4 Spartans.

The thing is the new looks of covenant client species looking way radical. That’s pretty much it for me.

My only real concern with the Spartans artistically is their helmets. I considered a nice shiny visor to be a solid part of what gave Halo helmets their look. None of the helmets they’ve shown (except ODST and that other one they showed in the weapons trailer) have a real solid visor. They look like something from another series entirely, like if we popped the Nanosuit 2.0 in here. It wouldn’t look bad, but IMO it looks off, like it doesn’t belong.

Whatever. I’ll be wearing a helmet with an actual visor eventually. Probably ODST, for the third game in a row. Love that helmet.

Well, EOD is making a return and the Oceanic helmet will probably be my go-to choice.

I’m conflicted about ODST (if it really is ODST). It looks nothing like the ODST I’ve come to know and love, which bothers me, but it looks badass and fit for an actual Spartan now.

I’m not too fond of it because it screams generic sc-fi. I loved how the Forerunner architecture was so archaic, but grand. Same for most of the Covenant stuff for that matter. It evoked a sense of mystery and wonder, because they’re clearly super advanced species. Why do their buildings look like something the Aztec or Egyptians would’ve made? Funnily enough, the designs were heavily influenced by the consoles limitations. The lack of power on the Xbox ended up with things looking a bit, bland, for a lack of a better word. Sometimes not letting the original creator run wild ends up for the best. Regardless, now 343 are in control they’ve gone and sc-fi’d the architecture up, and now it’s beaming with lights and looking very mechanical.

Eh, art is one of those subjective things

It looks amazing, pure badass!

Not quite fond of the changes to Recon. It used to be my favorite, not anymore.
