The Natural Environments in Halo Infinite

Aside from all of the obvious graphical and performance issues in the July demo, there was something else about the environment that didn’t seem right. One of the main things I’ve landed on as particularly distracting is the redwood-like trees scattered over the ring. They’re so small - redwoods in real life are massive. I feel like having a forest with trees towering over you would be way more impactful than what was shown - kind of like what was in the 2018 announcement trailer, with that section with the deer creatures in a dark forest. There are other things too, like how the grass kinda blends into a blurry smudge of green and the stonework doesn’t look realistic, but that has more to do with the graphical implantation more so than design choices. I don’t know why but Yosemite seems more jaw-dropping than the Halo ring we were shown. Natural parks like that have huge waterfalls, cliff faces and towering trees, and that stuff just seemed kind of absent from the demo. It made the ring feel small, when I feel like the opposite should be true - you should step out of the pelican and feel tiny in this huge rich world that’s ready to be explored. That’s just my opinion though, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the environments we’ve seen in Infinite so far.

100% agree with this. The environments definitely need to look and feel epic, similar to how you said like Yosemite or other national parks. I want towering cliff walls, giant desert plateus, vast oceans, etc. Like how so many of us were blown away the first time we stepped out onto that Halo ring back in 2001.

Exactly! I feel like they tried to replicate that experience but it just fell flat. I also have a feeling that because the ring is broken up, it will limit the amount of sprawling fields, deserts, or forests that can be implemented, which really sucks.

I’m really hoping 343 is able to pull through and deliver on some truly breathtaking environments. Joseph Staten’s words he shared regarding Infinite’s campaign in the recent December update do seem promising though. I also would love to see changes in weather throughout different explorable areas.

I do agree, changes in the weather and dynamics throughout the game as we encounter different areas would help the world feel alive compared to those jarring hexagons littered around the map. Imagine wandering on glassed areas from the banished or previous covenant from the reclaimer saga (Shadows of reach), or Halo 3 ODST atmosphere with some rain to help enhance a certain emotion or scene, etc.

Would’ve also liked to see more wildlife. Grunts getting stalked by some alien leopards. Or actual Gorilla vs Brutes lol.

Dude I swear if every area of the explorable map is just surrounded by those out of place hexagon pillars, that will really be a huge disappointment.

True, it would be cool to have cliffs, huge forests, etc. But what I really think would be cool is if there were animals or wildlife to see. They don’t even have to be interactive, it would just be a nice touch to see in Infinite.

I’m expecting set regions of weather, but dynamic? Not sure if that’ll be a thing, I don’t wanna get my hopes up. At least we have the day night cycle. Honestly, if they do Reach’s forge world on a huge scale, along with the things we expect and in a higher fidelity of graphics, then I’m good. Even if they graphics isn’t that much better, I’ll be ok, just add more foliage, rocks, water, trees etc…
