The Mute Ban - we all seen it in action, heard about it, and some of us like myself have experienced it first hand.
Bungie decided to throw this into Halo Reach under the assumption that the community would use it properly. Here is the thing, whenever you allow the community the “ban-hammer” over a function such as this, it doesn’t work out. It’s abused and destroys the online interaction for many players. It’s not fun being mute banned.
The worst part of the current implementation is that you get no notification, no warning, and no idea when it wears off. You’re just unable to hear other players and you don’t know when it ends. Players are mute banned for a variety of reason. Some are speaking a different language, some play their music, some yell in their mics, some are just normal talking individuals.
The thing is, I am perfectly capable of muting a player that annoys me - for whatever reason on my own. I think the mute function should be in matchmaking - just like previous games. However, the mute BAN should not be in matchmaking.
This is how the mute ban currently works in Reach:
You’re in matchmaking, if enough players mute you within a certain time frame (which is unknown) you become mute banned.
In playlists like MLG, players automatically mute their opponents - it’s coined from Halo 3. So players that regularly play MLG, are most likely always mute banned.
How do you know when someone is mute banned? When you enter a pregame lobby in matchmaking, they’re already muted before you did it.
I have made the mistake of unmuting many mute banned players, you would think I had learned my lesson, but I wanna keep giving people chances. So far EVERY player I have unmuted that was banned has been playing music over the mic, screaming, or talking more smack than I ever thought humanly possible.
The Mute Ban is annoying because there’s all these random symbols that I don’t want/need. and yes, if I want to mute a person, I’ll (believe it or not) spend the extra 2 seconds it takes to mute them. and what really surprises me, is all the little kids that arent Mute Banned, like wait, people want to listen to them? I agree with you on the MLG thing though, it’s a Halo 3 habit and people are getting punished for not wanting to hear the other team, which is ridicolous.

So they should deteriorate the online experience for an entire fan base because of a select few? Handing the keys of banning people into the hands of players is something that should never be done.
If you find players annoying online, by all means, mute them. But they shouldn’t be banned by any means.

I rather enjoy the convenience of having those players muted before I encounter them, it saves my ears on a daily basis.
And omg if it matters so much, search with friends and party up.

Every game I play, I play with friends. I’m always in a party. Have you ever been mute banned yourself? I guarantee that once you experience it first handed, it’s just pointless on why it was implemented in the first place.
Nope, never been mute banned myself, probably because of the way I conduct myself. I don’t see an issue with it, as I said, every time I’ve unmuted a mute banned player, my ears have hated me for it.

It’s funny because I have been mute banned, and it’s not because of the way I conducted myself. It’s because I’m an Inheritor. Weird eh?
I’ve seen people mute banned because they don’t speak English. I’ve seen people banned because they don’t use a mic. Sounds ridiculous right? Well, it happens. Welcome to Reach.

Meh, once again I gotta pull the Travelocity card, never roam alone. I wish people would realize how many of their issues that would solve…
