The Mongoose!

The mongoose is easily the least useful vehicle in the game. This is by design, I get that, but I still think it could use a little boost that wouldnt make it too strong(yea its a mongoose), would make it more fun to drive, and give you a few more options when it comes to using it.

My first suggestion I cant claim credit for, this was my friends idea and I think its brilliant.

Give the mongoose an electrically charged cattle-grill for frying spartans. As it is now the mongoose is nearly impossible to splatter somebody with, it bogs down on hills and in water and rarely do you have enough to speed to kill somebody even if you hit them direct on. Now I know the mongoose isnt supposed to be a splatter machine, but how cool would it be to have a grill on the front that you have to charge up and if you time within a small window (1-2 seconds and it could glow blue like the rail gun to indicate its charging/charged) you can fry the spartan in front of you. With a small window for actually killing the person with the charge, it would make this a skillful “weapon” to have to use and would be easily avoided anyway. I personally think this would rock, what do you guys think?

My second suggestion is to allow people who have the gunner perk on to be able to carry a mounted turret on the back of a mongoose. Since youd have to use a perk to be able to do this I dont think it would be too strong at all, and it would be hilarious seeing a “mini” warthog flying around.

Certainly not game breaking additions or suggestions, but as somebody who views the mongoose as a mostly comical addition, and enjoys going for a mongoose splatter spree from time to time I think these would be some cool tweaks.

The mongoose is usefully enough. It’s quite resilient and can survive a direct rocket, a sticky nade, and I think it might even survive a gauss shot.

Yea the mongoose itself is really resilient, but the guy driving it is totally unshielded and in 99% of cases dead before the mongoose itself. It is useful for CTF and big game hunting with a rocket on the back, I just think a small boost wouldnt hurt it.

Mongoose + incineration cannon = game over.
//sarcasm

Anyway, the mongoose is not meant for attack on its own. It’s a point A to B transportation vehicle that has far more mobility that any other. You can carry a player with an objective or weapon on back, and that is about all that is needed. I’m gotten an overkill on the back of a mongoose (see statement above). I think it’s fine the way it is.

Yes, the mongoose is not meant for attack but I really dont think an electric bumper would turn it into an offensive weapon. I think itd be more of a novelty that gives you some laughs when you can actually pull a kill off with it.

I can tell nobody thinks this is as genious as I do. AN ELECTRICALLY CHARGED MONGOOSE BUMPER PEOPLE!!

With the right team the Mongoose is a key element in the some CTF matches.
In Complex it’s a game changer. Especially for the team that gets the elevator spawn – they almost always lose.

I have some experimental suggestions.

  1. Give the driver a machine gun that he/ she can use. You shouldn’t be able to aim it other than turning the mongoose( in other words, it will only shoot directly in front of the mongoose.
  2. Another idea I have is that you can be able to use armor abilities in combination with riding the mongoose. For example, maybe if the player had a jet pack they can use it while on the mongoose to fly while still on the mongoose. I admit that this is probably a terrible idea and even if it was implemented into the game, there would be very little use for it anyway, but I still feel like it could be fun

Well it is a little better than it used to be. In all other games, the Warthog was faster than it, making it basically a smaller, weaker, unarmed Warthog. As for a buff, I’m not too sure, maybe let the guy on the back shoot in first person or carry a turret like you said if they have Gunner on?

> 1. Give the driver a machine gun that he/ she can use. You shouldn’t be able to aim it other than turning the mongoose( in other words, it will only shoot directly in front of the mongoose.

I like this idea. I think allowing the driver to shoot their secondary weapon but only if they have a magnum would keep it from being very strong and would definitely require quite a bit of skill to actually use effectively.

> 2. Another idea I have is that you can be able to use armor abilities in combination with riding the mongoose.

This is an interesting one that I thought about also. The jet and thruster packs might make it a bit strange though, and I dont think a hardlight shield should be able to be used on it. Maybe limiting the use of an armor ability to the passenger would work, and say if they have a jet pack or thruster pack they hop off the mongoose when they use it.

Bungie tried the “usable weapons on the Mongoose” idea for the Halo 2 alpha build and scrapped it for a good reason. If anything, it should have less health. It’s pretty ridiculous how the little ATV is more resilient than the actual armored truck. Maybe make it less prone to flip over and decrease the required speed for a fatal splatter, but it’s kind of ridiculous how tough the mongoose is in this game.

Having somebody be able to use a detached turret on the back with the gunner mod is a cool idea, but it’s not supposed to be a combat vehicle. Trying to get kills on the back of a mongoose in a blowout game is always entertaining, and getting noscopes from a passenger seat is hilarious. I always thought there should be an achievement for getting a SAW kill on the back of a mongoose called “Minihog” or something.

You’ve obviously never run into my team on CTF. If we get Red side on Complex, all you’ll see surrounding that flag is 5 autosentries. One guard and the other four can make runs at the blue side flag. Any guy who pokes his head out I basically insta-shield stripped and the one guard can pop a header to kill him off.

I would like to see a mongoose with a mounted turret on it.

Would be more useful if you could actually find rockets on the maps.

The Mongoose electric flyswatter… I like it. Now just re-map the horn to another button, and make a medal showing a splattered Spartan with a lightning bolt through him.

I don’t know about putting turrets on it though, it’s fast enough as it is and with a rocket/Incinerator-carrying passenger it can be plenty deadly. I saw someone in a CTF match get a Killtacular with a beam rifle while riding one across Ragnarok.

Not if you know how to use it.

I’m aware that this is Halo 3, but try doing this with a Concussion Rifle, it’s even more effective in Halo 4 than the brute shot was on Halo 3 and is actually easier to do now.

It’s a shame no one has tried to learn this playing style, I’d love to see more montages like this.

Wow that was an impressive display of mongoose skills. Ive never seen anybody using that style of flipping the mongoose. I think the halo 3 mongoose had a bit bigger engine under the hood than the halo 4 one though. I was able to get a 7 mongoose splatter spree at one point in halo 3 but I can hardly ever get splatters with it in halo 4.

The Halo 4 mongoose is more fun to race and drive with than any other mongoose. Its also not as hard to get splatters with.

Should have 2 linked but fixed forward only pointing fully auto Assault Rifles mounted on the front between the front wheels - bottomless clip like the Hog’s chain gun but can overheat. AR’s being short range would suit the rapid movement of the hog and a kill time of 0.85sec when in the optimum close range being exactly half the time of a single AR.

> The Halo 4 mongoose is more fun to race and drive with than any other mongoose. Its also not as hard to get splatters with.

I would have to disagree with this. The mongoose slows down considerably on almost any incline and Ive hit people square on while going what I thought was full speed and they only lose their shields at best most of the time.

An AR on the mongoose would be interesting but I think maybe a mounted pistol would be better because with dual AR’s I could see the mongoose becoming a hit and run and base raiding machine.

Yes it would become useful, I agree.
