give it some cool abilities like a super lunge type jump that can crush enemies and vechicles. to balance it, give it a 30 second cooldown and make it visible to other players looking at the mantis when it has an active jump ability ready.
you could make it so the mantis needs kill streaks to activate jumps instead which i think would work better, like a 3 kill streak. or make kills speed up the cooldown so a really good mantis player could go crazy. at the very least, make this a mantis variant.
A mounted gun turret for one arm, homing missiles that can be fired singularly or all at once on the other, and the ability to one-hit kill opponents with a single stomp of its foot hardly classes the Mantis as “boring”.

Let’s keep kill streaks out of Halo, thanks. What’s next, a 25 kill streak for a Tactical MAC blast?
I’ve always felt like the mantis is a more boring version of the Hornet. Same armament but no passengers and can no longer fly. Sure, it has a shield, but that’s just because you can no longer properly evade with it stuck to the ground and being so -Yoink- slow. And the stomp ability is pretty much useless.
I’m sure there are ways to make the Mantis more interesting than what it is. A “super lunge type jump” sounds like the sort of thing the Reaver does in Halo Wars 2, which if you mean anything like that, I’d by supportive of it.
Kill streaks…? Much less so. When Halo 4 did killstreaks, the Halo community was outraged and knew Halo was trying to follow trends with it. I doubt killstreaks making a return will do anything good.
Regardless, I think the Mantis is a cool idea that could be expanded upon. It isn’t particularly like most other vehicles, and I think if it could make itself stand out more it could do itself some favors. Maybe there’s a redesign or something 343 has planned for the Mantis in Infinite.

kill streaks is not a bad design, how they were implemented in 4 was bad design. think about it. armor abilities are fine if they are pick ups. the same would apply to a mantis with a kill streak ability
The problem with the Mantis is that as it stands its just another tank that isn’t that different from a Wraith or Scorpion. It is just another slow moving armor piece though the stomp is a nice feature. Any mission that features the Mantis could swap it out for Scorpion without anything meaningful changing.
Had the Mantis just straight up replaced the Scorpion I would have been totally fine with that, we would just be exchanging one tank for another tank.
If you really wanted to have the Mantis coexist with the Scorpion than I would have made the mantis a bit smaller, but faster and generally more mobile with lighter armor. Lean more into the “powered exoskeleton” idea rather than a “Battlemech” if that makes any sense.

does it count as a kill streak if the kills are speeding up the cooldown similar to how killing speeds up your titan drop in titanfall?

The thing is, armour abilities/equipment were created to give Spartan’s/Elite’s an edge in combat. Vehicles already have that edge with superior firepower and health.

how i see it, is there is no real edge. vehicles just trade damage until both are nearly dead. its boring design. player vs vehicle is fun, but vehicle vs vehicle is lacking.
its the same problem titanfall had with its titans, boring titan vs titan fights.

Kill streaks are bad design for an arena shooter, of which Halo is

What about bringing in the Cyclops for the exoskeleton as it’s small and fast, it can deal bonus damage to enemy vehicles with a slow firing single-shot cannon ( it should two shot players but has low aim assist )
The Cyclops could be made into a two seat vehicle where one person controls movement and the other controls weaponry

kill streaks originated in CoD so yes it is set in stone and Halo is an arena shooter
stop trying to justify the abomination that was H4

if you reread the thread, i clearly dont justify H4.
“kill streaks originated in CoD so yes it is set in stone” this statement makes no sense. games can share different features. balance is whats key to success.

Bad features are worse when you start porting them to different games for no reason. There is no balancing a bad feature because it is still present and will make the game worse. H4 tried to strike a “balance” with killstreaks until they were eventually removed from almost all gamemodes yet there inclusion still hurt the game even after being killed off by all playlists

youre not making good points. having kill streaks on the spartan itself ruined halo 4 because it destroyed map control for power weapons since you could spawn one next to you, plus it was random i think. kill streaks on a mantis would not have the same effect, because you have to fight for mantis or only one per team.
anyway, this thread is not about kill streaks, its about abilities for the mantis which doesnt have to require a killstreak.
I love the Mantis! To me, it’s the best new thing in Halo since 343i took over and it feels like it belongs with the other vehicles. Movement feels different compared to other vehicles in that you can step over obstacles that would otherwise be impassable. Plus, the weapons are fun to use. At the same time, it’s not too powerful so it does not infringe on the firepower stats of Wraiths and Scorpions. Stomps make CQC more viable than it would be in a Scorpion.
Perhaps most importantly, there is no other vehicle you can -Yoink!- with. For that reason alone, the Mantis deserves a ton of love. Doesn’t hurt how the comedic value is multiplied by the long piece of metal between its legs.

i would like to expand on the stomp with a special jump stomp ability which would have to be carefully balanced.
