With the Sidekick taking on the roll of a Halo 5/2 sidearm hybrid. That leaves space for the Mangler, a 3 shot to kill precision revolver.
I only got to watch others use this weapon, but I a absolutely loved what I saw. I love that a successor to the heavy hitting CE pistol is coming in the form of a powerful banished weapon.
If spec ops brutes like those in Halo 3 return in Infinite wielding these? We’d all better say our prayers to God Halo.
Nothing will ever replace the CE magnum; its existence (albeit brief) has left an indelible mark on us all and ever since it left we’ve been heartbroken.

Wasn’t that brief. It’s been in (roughly 9 years between) two games. And I’d bet (hope) it’ll be in Infinite too.

3 if you count Reach’s take on it in Anniversary Slayer.
I was able to use it in a game during the 4v4 flight a couple of weekends ago (I think the game wasn’t supposed to add them in but I got lucky) and it’s definitely harder to use than the Halo CE pistol. It did feel very satisfying though, kinda like a maulerr/pistol type gun.
It shoots super slow and has few rounds per reload. If anything it’s a close to medium range support weapon as it’s ttk is close to the BR. If you miss a shot you may as well be using a different gun.
I see it mostly being used to participate as multiple teammates take down an enemy. Whereas the HCE magnum had a potential 4 kills per mag and could hit shots at longer range and shot much faster. Meaning the Magnum really empowered the individual player to pop off and make plays on their own.
I like the 3sk, but that’s literally the only similarity to the HCE magnum.
Not a replacement for the CE Magnum, but still a welcome addition to the sandbox. There’s still room for a CE Magnum, perhaps as a power weapon that spawns on weapon pads like the Sniper Rifle, Skewer, Gravity Hammer, Rockets, etc.
I love the CE magnum but with the sidekick being the fast low power pistol and the mangler being a tough slow shooting powerhouse there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason to add the magnum or at least have it be the same as Halo CE. It would be nice to see it return maybe occupying a different niche but I wouldn’t want to see it come back just being the same. (In my opinion it would just be a nostalgia grab)
Nothing like a CE Pistol with less than half the usual rate of fire, a 2/3rds the ammo capacity and a smaller scope…
Grumbling aside it is closer to what the sidekick should have been, albeit the Halo 3 Magnum to the Sidekick’s Halo 2 Magnum. If nothing else it looks to be accurate rather than a heavy bloom piece of garbage like the Sidekick. As much as 343 claimed to hear the complaints about redundancy in the sandbox here we are again with overlapping weapons. A close range oriented precision weapon is a valid niche, but there doesn’t need to be 2(arguably 3) of them.

Be glad this threat wasn’t bulldozed over your statement of the sidekick and H5/H2 magnum lol.
Anyway I saw some clips and it’s quite an intriguing weapon. I like the pacing of the shots and the sound of it firing, balance wise I don’t understand it’s place. Missing one shot drastically increases the TTK beyond all other weapons. Great for headshotting in the campaign but hard to judge it’s power in MP.
It’s funny that in functionality the original H3 mangler is now remade into the bulldog and the mangler becomes a precision weapon.
Concerning CE pistol replacements; I just came across some clips of the Stalker Rifle on YouTube. Also has a 3 shot kill and a faster firing speed then the mangler. Optimal TTK seems on par with the AR/sidekick so basically a shot faster then the BR but harder to aim. So far an interesting but also confusing sandbox.

I mean you did call it a successor and implied the return of the HCE pistol in form of the Mangler.
And this is simply not the case.
The HCE pistol was a starting utility weapon that allowed for quick kills if you master it.
I have not played with it yet but the mauler seems to be in wierd spot. It has a slow ROF, slow moving projectiles, small magazine and (from what I’ve seen) a regular 3StK. So unlike the HCE pistol (or any other utility weapon in Halo) you don’t seem to need to hit a headshot at the end.
I’m not sure what it’s place is supossed to be really. I don’t see it really being used much at all, at least in MP. In CQB and mid-range it seems way to “clunky”, slow killing when compared to the AR and I don’t expect it to perform any good at long range do to HIs insane strafing and the weapons slow bullet travel time.
From what I experienced, this weapon combines the Brute Mauler (1 Shot+melee kill), the Halo 3/Marathon Magnum (8 bullet Clip, same RoF), and the Halo CE Pistol (heavy projectile weapon, 3SK capability)… I honestly love how it feels as it’s pretty much a perfectly balanced skill Brute Magnum since at some point you need to lead your shots like in Halo CE MP on PC back in the day, and even if you only land 2 shots, it pretty much guaranteed their shields will be gone, so I loved it even as a support weapon. This was hands down my most favorite weapon in the game, and I cannot wait to use it in both Campaign and MP with people.

Its a 3 shot marksmen pistol.
That’s enough CE DNA to call it a successor for me.
