"The Mangler is Broken!" Should 343 actually nerf this weapon?

The Mangler is a great weapon to pick up. Pro-players like Optic Lucid showed us by, using a technique where he drops the Mangler after 2 shots and then uses his BR to hit the player with a headshot and get the point. Although most people do not use the Mangler that way. They try to shoot the shields off their opponent with the Mangler, but they try to shoot the head with the Mangler instead or they shoot their target and get close enough to melee them. The Mangler is a great weapon it can turn the tide if the player is good enough with the weapon. No decent player will let you run up to them with the Mangler in Ranked. A decent player will punish you. The Mangler has a medium range shot but when it reaches the farthest it can go it starts to drop. Making the weapon feel less consistent. So, the Average player tends to just use the 1 shot 1 Melee method for it is faster and feels more fun. The biggest argument that I want to present to everybody is that they Mangler can be hard countered.

Anybody who can land their shots can kill a Mangler Player. The thing is that the casual player usually finds themselves in a 1v1 situation. Making them often lose their engagement against the opponent with the Mangler. Because they miss their shots, or the mangler player is at close range. I believe that the best way to counter this “Meta” is to start teaching our community how to play the game. The Mangler is a weapon that brings so much to a team and for it to be nerfed… whether they remove the 1 shot 1 melee or the 3 shot method. Knowing that the Mangler is not going to be the same because of less damage or less shots would negatively impact the game. Nerfing something in a game is something that should happen in any game. Change is necessary when it is for the right reasons. Although this Culture that has been around over the past decade of Nerfing and “balancing weapons” it is going too far. The player wants to be able to come back to a game that feels constant. Like halo 5 or better yet Halo 3. They had weapons and abilities that made the better team win. Those who have adapted and persevered because of what they learn like Crouch jumping or the Mega Sliding are the players that want to be able to slay out and have fun. The Mangler is one of the weapons that helps with that play style. I am not saying that it is the best play style, it is not by any means. But it is fun, and that is why it is good. Another argument that peoples are bringing up is to put the Mangler in a Red Panel like the Heatwave. I also do not think that is a clever idea. Frankly because it messes up the game. We have the sniper the heatwave and the bulldog. The other weapons frankly do not have any influence. Furthermore, I do not believe that it is the spawn’s fault as to why the meta is the way it is. It is the play style people choose. For example, just running around and not being in proper positioning. Like when Lucid 3 tapped players by dropping the weapon. What really happened was that the other team was not together. If they pushed up at the right time. Lucid will lose that engagement 9/10.

What really makes a difference in these games that people are having trouble with are the techniques that people have found, like crouch jumping the slide. The Mechanics that make you stand out than the rest is what makes a skillful player. Also, it makes halo a great game a fun and enjoyable Experience. I think that the people who want the gun to nerf fail to see the possibilities because, they are not looking at their mistakes they only pay attention to what happens when you play the game wrong (they are alone, they don’t land their shots). I also would like to bring up a point. I am a controller player; AA (Aim-assist) contributes a lot in my fights. I think that we should Buff M&K’s (Mouse & Keyboard) Bullet Magnetism. M&K is the party that is wanting the change. That would be the better decision. After that I am sure we would see improvement.

In the meantime, while we wait for the decision of 343 Devs. we should focus on growing the community by teaching ourselves how to play the game. I am not saying at a pro level or anything but for those who are committed reach out and let us try to build a community that promotes growth. We need to teach those to Crouch Jump and Mega Slide. There is a lot to learn with this game and it starts with us. those willing to speak our minds. That said, what do you think should happen with the Mangler? Is it really that broken?

FYI one way to balance the Mangler is to have it spawn in place of another power weapon, basically treating it as if it was a Skewer or Sniper or Sword.

Why did they feel the need to rework the weapon sandbox, if this was their grand design? “Let’s remove the Forerunner class of weapons and add a shock class of weapons, negating the effect that plasma weapons used to have. And you know what else this game needs? To take away that overpowered one shot shotgun. Now we can put in four more guns that can act as underpowered shotguns!” Like I’m not saying the weapon sandbox is terribly balanced, I’m just saying it makes no sense to do everything they did. And it’s not really much better balanced than anything they’ve done in the past. So what’s the point, just to say you did something different? They could have used that energy to make an actually functional game, instead, if you ask me.

But anyways, to answer your question, the Mangler does need a nerf and it’s super simple. Two shots before melee, four shots for a perfect kill. Make the Bulldog a two shot kill for up to 1.5x the distance it currently is. I’m sure there’s more to it to get it all perfectly balanced and defined, but that right there would seem to solve a lot of the complaints people are having about the mangler. Not too underpowered that anyone can complain about the mangler being worthless and not too overpowered to have people dying almost instantly every game from a power weapon that’s not a power weapon.

It’s not that powerful to warrant a slot on a Power Weapon rack.
It definitely belongs on a Red Rack with the likes of Dog and Heatwave, due to all their similar damage ranges and 1 tap 1 melee kill potential.

That much is enough.

They don’t know what they’re doing. Thats why they do these completely backwards things to the sandbox.

It’s also not weak enough to warrant the very quick respawn time and range capability it’s given. It’s all good in quickplay, but in ranked it upsets the balance, as the AR isn’t the starting weapon. Hence a CQC counter to the mangler lies in the sword or hammer. Even with those, the mangler can hang at medium range and not get hit by either of the two counters, while peppering with shots. The BR doesn’t stack up to the mangler at mid ranges, which makes the mangler dominant there too.

It’s effectiveness is in a strange limbo. Not quite strong enough to be a power weapon, not quite weak enough to be on a standard rack. If theres one thing that makes ranked annoying, it’s inconsistency.

You do know what a Red Rack is right?
It’s a Rack that only spawns on its own every match and there is only one of it in a match for 4v4. It’s red because it does not respawn when the weapon is still in play or still has Ammo in it. This will significantly reduce the rate at which players can acquire the weapon.

When a weapon is dropped, it takes 12 seconds to despawn, regardless of ammo count. So after 12 secs, it is ‘out of play’. The mangler takes around 30 seconds to respawn on the rack.
So from drop to spawn, it is 42 seconds total. This is far too fast, mostly due to the stupidly quick despawn time.
Coupled with the advantages at 2 of 3 ranges, it’s in play for too long and gets replenished far too quickly if one team manages to keep the mangler at bay.
They should either: Increase despawn time or just get rid of it from ranked.

42 seconds is pretty long to be investing your entire game’s outcome on a single weapon. People have no issues with the Shotguns taking this long to respawn and get back into play, so why are you having this issue with the Mangler being the same? Mangler isn’t any much better than the Shotguns range wise btw, and a BR user shooting a Mangler user is practically the same as a BR user shooting at a Shotgun user. If you can’t kill them at that range then you really gotta get good with your aiming.

It doesn’t have at an advantage at 2 of 3 ranges, it only has the advantage at close range. At mid and above, the Mangler’s fire rate and arcing projectile is significantly inferior to literally any other hitscan weapon. Well maybe not the commando cos the commando is straight garbage.

Also what do you mean keep the Mangler at bay? Like keep it in play or making it despawn? If it’s in play, the Red Rack prevents the spawning of another, if it’s out of play then there is only one Mangler in play anyway, due to the Red Rack.

Or we can try putting Mangler on the Red Rack first. Red Racks are usually situated in the middle of maps, or in common accessible locations. Halo being an Arena shooter rewards the players who make it a point to control weapon spawns for advantage. Putting it on a Red Rack in common area will give the advantage to the deserving team who manages to capitalize on the spawns and retain the advantage if they don’t just die immediately with the weapon.
