The main issue with the campaign.

Putting aside the iffy texture work and the occasional unacceptably low resolution, the main issue with the campaign revolves around the attempt by the developer to produce their own version of Halo 2. I may be in the minority but I happen to think that Halo 2 was the pinnacle of the franchise and the Arbiter was a stroke of genius. He works as a Character and his an arch. He is also a good replacement for the Chief as both characters representing the good and bad of their respective factions. The Arbiter also manages to be his own “man”, he is not simply following orders for the entire game (unlike a certain protagonist). Importantly, he became the Arbiter as a result of Master Chiefs actions. He is a sympathetic character. Another point would be that he allows the audience to see inside the covenant, we understand more about their aims and their complex motivations.

Now, Look at Spartan Locke and fireteam Osiris. His motivation is simply that he is following orders. He is not forced into following these orders, there is no conflict or disagreement. Our only engagement with his character is that he is trying to capture (or kill) a character we actually like. This lack of characterisation extends to the rest of his team. Apart from Buck, they are all non-entities. It is also impossible to know whether the fact that Nathan Fillion voices him and provides his likeness to the character makes him more memorable than he otherwise would be.

This issue also plagues Master Chiefs blue team, as well as most of the secondary characters. Remember stubborn Captain Keys, now we have Captain Laskey. He exists, doesn’t say or do much though. Did you like Cortana? Now she is evil. It’s okay though, the new good AI is here and he is designed like a WW2 pilot for some reason. We also have the Arbiter, he is completely redundant and shoehorned into the game though. Not to worry though, we have another Spartan leader Sarah Palmer. She is voiced by Jennifer Hale… and eh. That’s it.

Who knows, maybe if we got the characters from the marketing material we could have had something of note here, alas that isn’t the case. It is a shame. Plus, the Warden Eternal with the British accent was one of the laziest antagonists in any video game, ever.

The story for this game is just awful. It’s SOOO bad.

And what is up with the Warden Eternal? He looks like a Bionicle…

haha. Now that you have said that. He does. I knew I recognised him from somewhere.

This will look great in a trailer. I doesn’t matter if it’s allegorical and not in the game.

It just felt to me that 343 have held a lot back from this story to make Halo 6’s story unbelievably insane. I refuse to believe they actually thought this was an acceptable campaign story. They had to be holding some things for the sake of Halo 6.

The damage has been done. Not much can be recovered at this point. Unless the ending is Chief waking up at the Start of Halo CE again. It was all a dream.

Not many agree?

So, I don’t think they were trying to recreate Halo 2. That would have been more obvious, but I can see how you thought that. The game is the second in the current story arch and it had a twist where old allies became enemies, but that’s just how the plot was planned out, the game has changed too much to say it was a recreation of Halo 2.

I think what you were trying to say is that the characters were not fleshed out, which I agree with 100% if we’re limiting the character development to only the game and not the expanded Halo universe which actually provides a lot of backstory and development for the main characters in the game. However, the Cortana and Warden Eternal problems persist. There is no way I can say that the Cortana ‘plot twist’ or the Warden Eternal made any sense, but if you don’t think too much about it I guess it becomes more understandable. He wants her to do something, and protects her so she can do it, but she wants to do it a different way. Makes sense if you don’t think about it… maybe that should be the game’s new tagline.

Halo 5: Guardians
It all makes sense, if you don’t think about it.

You say that like it’s a bad thing.

While I think Halo 5 is a good game in terms of graphics and gameplay I also think it is the worst Halo game and they have absolutely ruined the character of Cortana.

Her “death” to save John- 17 at the end of 4 was a great and fitting end to one of the best characters in the Halo franchise. But of course they couldn’t leave it at that and had to bring her back as a crazy A.I. who wants to rule the universe and kill anyone who gets in her way, because it’s not like we haven’t seen crazed homicidal A.I.s before…oh wait.

There was also the issue of playing as Spartan Locke. Forgetting the fact that he is a boring an unmemorable character the simple fact is when it comes to Halo the numbered entries star Master Chief and the other characters are for use / control in named entries such as ODST, Reach and even Wars. Yes I know in 2 you also played as the Arbiter but the main focus was still on Master Chief. In 5 MC was just slightly better than a cameo and as I already said they have ruined Cortana.

So once again I say Halo 5 is a good game in many ways but when compared to the other Halo games it is easily the worst.

yeah this all felt like an awkward buyout of time or something to drag the story out more. ive been waiting for the precursor story arc the whole time. the story of the flood and the origins. that, and what the hell was the 2013 e3 trailer even about? the only thing we gained from that was the guardians. but the desert? the cloak? i have an action figure based on that trailer so the plan was deeply in place.
