The M / KB vs Controller Debate

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I would make its own thread.

Halo has one of the longest TTK’s of any modern shooter. Much longer then CoD or BF. Now what does a high TTK like this mean? It means that you have to be accurate for far longer then previous. CoD, you can flick back and forth and get kills quickly without having to have consistent precision.

M / KB in Halo - For pretty much anyone who is not a Pro or competing at extremely high levels, having consistent, accurate aim kill after kill on this long TTK is near impossible. For example I have a 2.5+ K/D on CoD and BF yet a 1.4 on M / KB on Halo: Infinite. This is due to now having to aim for nearly 3x the time of other games.

Controller in Halo - I have NO doubt that the aim assist is less then in previous Halo’s. The thing is, if it was not tuned down it would be a slaughter against M / KB players. We have already seen in other games when aim assist is tuned too high it absolutely dominates M / KB. When playing on a controller I went from a 1.4 to a 2.3 K/D and 35-42% accuracy to 55-64% accuracy.

Conclusion: Both sides are feeling something new and different. M / KB players are having to learn to adjust to a longer TTK and learning to have longer precision aim. While controller players are having to learn how to adjust to a lower aim assist. As it stands right now I think the balance is actually in a pretty damn good place, I think controller is a tad stronger at close to medium range, while M / KB beats out precision shots like sniping and fine movements. They currently both have their pros and cons going for them.

For me being a 10 year M / KB user for FPS games I am actually switching to my controller now, because it just feels better. (If anyone has an extra Master Chief Elite Series 2 for sale hit me up)

They should do what Apex does: Have AA values on the console playlist that are more line with traditional AA values, and for crossplay have different AA values that result in approximately similar accuracy between inputs. Allow each playlist to play in 4 stacks. I feel like this is a reasonable compromise.

I still want them to allow us to turn off cross play. I’ve been in games with m/kb players and I can tell the difference.

I am not quite sure how Apex does it I will have to read into that a bit more.

I think opt in an out option is a good idea, but the point I am trying to make is it really is not needed right now. As it stands controller users have higher accuracy and K / D. I have no doubt that will change when M / KB users adjust more to the TTK change from other games. When that happens I think another look at the aim assist needs to be done.

Thing is when I was using M / KB I knew who had a controller because they could 3 tap headshot the BR almost every single time. It goes both ways. If you have a god tier M / KB user yes they will slap a controller player. But for the vast majority of us we are not running into those types of players.

The controller aiming is awful, where MKB is good. Have you tried playing on a controller? It’s the worst aiming experience I’ve ever had on any FPS on either MKB or controller.

It needs to be fixed.

It is clear you failed to read a single thing I posted.

The MNK vs controller discussion is going to go on forever, regardless of whether or not crossplay is present.

Now that you can plug mnk into an Xbox, pc vs console is a moot point.

I haven’t seen any games come up with the perfect answer, which may not even exist.

There may always be the question of: “did he win because of his input device?”

I play gears primarily, a game where input is not super important, and the discussion is still going on over there.

M&K is great in BTB where there are long ranges for sniping and vehicles.

It is demonstrably worse in 4v4 with tighter maps and mid-close range fights. These fights are almost always determined with BR/Pistol/AR fights that require tracking. So in competitive M&K is going to consistently lose.

There is a reason more pros and streamers use controller in Halo.

Lol

'Halo has one of the longest TTK’s of any modern shooter. Much longer then CoD or BF. Now what does a high TTK like this mean? It means that you have to be accurate for far longer then previous. ’

Halo had always higher ttk, the hitboxes are wide enough to hit at least body shots and finish with a head shot. This is not Destiny where crits are mandatory.
Furthermore, there is some sort bullet magnetism on PC, which is ridiculous in its own way. M&k is much more accurate design wise, especially considering how the human eye-to hand coordination works.

‘Controller in Halo - I have NO doubt that the aim assist is less then in previous Halo’s. The thing is, if it was not tuned down it would be a slaughter against M / KB players.’

You couldn’t be more in the dark. It is not just about aim assist, but the whole aiming mechanic(acceleration, magnetism etc) , which does not work properly. This has to do with the fact that controller can’ t control flinch as well as m&k. If you get hit by any weapon while using the zoom mechanic, you will see a fundamental difference how both systems handle that and how fast both systems can recover from that.

Furthermore, cross play needs to be optional. In the long run, I can see that many people don’t want to play against PC anyway.
There is no reason to relive the GoW5 dilemma.

Someday 343 will have to make a decision, what their targeted audience might be.

I agree with BTB and almost put that in my original post.

The MAJOR complaint on these forums is the aim assist.

Please go up against a controller in ranked using a BR with a M / KB from medium range. They will destroy you because they consistently hit those head shots.

I agree wholeheartedly, but as it stands currently right now. The vast majority of players are not used to this longer TTK and are still adjusting to having to aim for a far longer time. This is making it much much more difficult then a CoD or BF game. If you can’t comprehend that I don’t know what to say man.

Side Note: This forum system is dumb, all new games are using the same system and company. In order to quote you have to highlight the phrase and a button will pop up for quoting.
