This is MOSTLY geared towards those who started this journey of Halo back when CE first came out, but towards everyone anyway. What are your feelings on them redoing library to make it easier using different lighting effects?
Personally I enjoyed that feeling of confusion the first few times I played it. Although eventually I learned not only WERE to go, but I realized, “if dead flood do a 180” lolz.
But the atmosphere of it was that of fear, claustrophobic, and dread. I hope that with the new lighting to help guide you they don’t take away from that. I’m can’t wait to get to the last room for that last push to the index! That was always the trickist, yet in a way scariest part of the game with NONSTOP Flood attacking you! =D
to be honest I hated the library, it was confusing and flood would spank your -Yoink- constantly when you though you could take a break, but claustrofobic feeling, that indeed was awesome, they should just adjust the lighting a little so you don’t walk back half the lvl
> they should just adjust the lighting a little so you don’t walk back half the lvl
Honestly I’ve never realized that was even an issue until CEA was announced. o.o" my only issues was just being surrounded by those darn infectors! ><
I hate the Library, and I’m glad they’re putting in a way to find the route easier. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten lost on that level.
From a gameplay perspective, I wasn’t really bothered by the original version, nor am I bothered by the new one. From an aesthetic perspective, I found the Library boring when I first played it 9-10 years ago and I think they’ve done a wonderful job of giving it a makeover.
The Library’s not too hard to figure out. Here’s the original:

Not sure if joking or serious…

Well, serious in that it’s the actual layout of the Halo 1 Library level with size callouts (similar to my HBO articles) but I guess it’s up to interpretation whether it’s easy to navigate or not.
There’s a central shaft and then a few side corridors with elevators. Not really a complex layout.
Doesn’t matter just run hide in corner and run again. Thats how i got though it.
The first few times navigating the Library was a bit nerve racking (even more so on Legendary) but after a while it became to easy. Even though i knew where and when the flood was going to show the darkness played well with the theme. With that said the over all aesthetics of the library was boring, i am looking forward to the face-lift
Well, yeah, library was tedious, boring and extremely skillful, but with these new stuff and graphics… well, it will be a little easier and beautiful now
Heh, I remembered that I sometimes got lost when I wen through the whole level, and having to groan on how long it was anyways. Still, lookin forword to seein it in Anniversary graphics.
i didn’t know anyone ever got lost in this level to begin with. it was hands down my favorite level to play over and over again on CE
honestly, I was hoping it’d be dark like the CE version, but with some special glowy symbols/glyphs on walls to show which way you’er going, but not something that’d make the whole room light up.
Even though I found the level to be very repetitive, both visually and gameplay wise, it was still a level I enjoyed.
I thought the Library was one of the easier levels on Legendary, you just needed to go slow and finish off all the waves of enemies before moving forward. The only hard part was that one room where you get locked in it for a while and need to survive.
I never really understood what everyone’s major malfunction was with the original Library. I never really had much trouble navigating through it, even on my first playthrough. Sure I hit a dead-end every now and then, but I never got into a “OMG I’m so freaking lost!” situation.
Idk, maybe it’s because of the style of gameplay I was used to before I started playing Halo. I was an avid fan of the Zelda series back then, and I still am. Anyone who has played those games knows as well as I do that you pretty much had to check everywhere in order to progress in a dungeon. Typical FPS games are almost ALWAYS linear to the nth degree. The Library was one of the first levels in an FPS that kind of required the player to pay attention to what they were doing rather than guiding them through the level. So, I can understand why anyone who had only played FPS games up to that point would get lost in The Library.
It also doesn’t help that everything in the environment is trying to kill you.
I guess I was just used to finding my way around maze-like environments in video games at that point.
As for the changes in CEA: I don’t mind them. So, the level may be brighter. I’ll get over it. Hell, I may even like it more than the original. Who knows. I’m not going to pass judgement on it before I’ve even played it though.
The Library is one of my favourite levels. Then again, labyrinths don’t scare me, they excite me.
As for the actual visual change, I love how Hell glows from below. I am in awe of the chilly halls. And I can’t wait to bust a buck into the Flood with my trusty bandanna on.

Actually, mid-90’s FPS games had bizarre level designs and puzzles and stuff that make the Library look like a Call of Duty level. It’s really modern FPS’s that have completely linear and straightforward level designs; the complexity there dropped off drastically over time. Someone going from earlier FPS games into the Library should actually have found it relatively simple.
I mean, the Library actually has 343GS flying about and making comments to show you the correct direction and stuff. In 1994, Marathon dropping the player into a massive trash compactor with unmarked walls and no hint whatsoever as to any secret doorway out wasn’t too abnormal.
I find navigating it to be pretty easy. I like the dark atmosphere it had. It added to the level.
The level I got lost on was “Assault On The Control room”.
