First of all, joining games late only to still be on a team with less players and down hundreds of points is ridiculous.
The bigger issue however is games STARTING with uneven teams.
This is as close to a game-breaking issue as there can be for Christ sake!
What was wrong with the old Matchmaking system? The game started when the teams were even…explain to me the necessity for a join in progress system and the reasoning behind starting games with an odd number of players…I would absolutely LOVE to hear someone try to defend this.
Has anyone heard any response to this issue from 343 yet? I realize the game has only been out one week but come on, no previous Halo has had such a frustrating and completely fixable issue right from launch. It’s a travesty that a game of this quality is marred by such a dumb problem.
its just nothing new. keeping the same gameplay over and over would cause others to complain about that. people are never satisfied. luckily im sure you have your other halo games you can play. go have fun munchkin

How are you okay with being such an imbecile?
Hopefully they fix this. Doesn’t make sense and your right.
Also JIP would destroy the true skill system they are putting in. If you join on a losing team over half way through. thats your rank going down just because of the matchmaking system.

the “trueskill system” is already there and being tracked. It’s just not visible yet.
The problem is already occurring.
to OP: I’m fairly certain this a glitch, and was not intended. They will fix JIP, at least to some extent. I can’t say everyone will be happy but I am certain the 3v4 matches will get resolved… eventually.
I don’t mind JIP. My priority is getting into a game as quicly as possible, and if that means not waiting around lobbies for them to fill up then so be it.
Who cares about stats?? Life’s too short. I’d rather be playing than looking at a “waiting” screen.
Its not a glitch its just a bad idea.
I’ve actually joined more games on the winning team than the losing team. When I am on the losing team I usually win. JIP should not be in FFA gametypes though. What’s the point of that? I’ve won a Regicide game that I joined in progress with the leader needing like 3 kills to win but that’s besides the point. JIP in FFA is just pointless. The only way it’s even close to fair is if their are only 1-8 kills total in the game. When games start 4-3 for me it’s usually full within the first 10 seconds.
Part of the problem is the way a match ends, you get the XP report and within 10 seconds it’s already selecting the map for the next game. Apart from stopping you saving the film of the last game it means that anyone planning to leave does so after the teams have been set, so I’ve seen many times where it’s 5 v 1, 4 v 0, 6 v 2 etc.
There needs to be a longer gap for people to decide to leave before the teams are set. That way you can make balanced teams from the people that intend to stay for the next match.
A common experience I’ve had is to join Infinity Slayer in progress with the team losing badly (and the opposition having a full set of power weapons, which lead to more power weapons). I play to the end thinking at least I’ll be in a proper game from the start next time, then those people that lost bad leave after the game, but not fast enough, so the teams have been selected and now I’m on a 1 v 4 or 2 v 4 match.
I agree. JIP is a problem and starting with uneven teams is a HUGE problem. This needs to be addressed.
I also agree on why there isn’t a post game lobby. I never understood why I am instantly put in a game with the same 7 people that I just played with.
Quick Question!
Do you ever quit a team thats winning?
So were are all the JIP players going to end up… I am yet to end up on a winning team.
Thanks 343 your really getting how Halo works any more stuff you failed to mention when you applied for this game?
it’s not funny when you get in a team that its lossin for too much points its no t even
I like JIP. Sure I’ve jumped on the losing team, but several times we had a great comeback. Once I jumped in right when it ended (didn’t even get a boot on the ground) and my team lost.
On that note my biggest issue is uneven teams. We will have 11 people and instead of dividing it 6 vs 5 it ends up 7 vs 4. On slayer I don’t mind this because it just means more enemies to kill, but on objective games this means the game is lost.
Okay, I’m fine with ‘join session in progress’ once you’re not joining games four minutes after they’ve started and your team are tonnes of points down. That all goes on your service record.
I thought 343i said that there’d be special mechanisms in place to stop joining at the end of a game, but my friends and I have joined countless games where we were immediately presented with “ENEMY TEAM NEARING VICTORY”.
This is unacceptable.
OK heres a new one I just had… JIP… CTF 2:00mins left on the clock, Valhalla* 5v5 were 0-2 down there span killing with 2 mantis’s in the base, got a cap to bring it back to 1-2 and had the 2nd Flag in our hands! 20 yards from base and “GAME OVER” wtf there isn’t even any overtime!
As per usual 343 you lied about JIP, disable it and watch us all magically quite down and forget you even made such a stupid mistake.
On paper, the Join-in-Progress system seems like it would offer a few advantages, it allows for faster matchmaking times and it solves the problem of quitting teammates a bit by allowing the holes they left behind to be filled by new players. In practice, I don’t think it’s working out too well.
Starting games quickly (and as another poster pointed out, almost too quickly to escape) is great but the uneven teams can lead to early deficits which may then lead to more people quitting. Soon enough you find yourself way outnumbered and losing, certainly not an impossible situation but still it’s an uphill battle. Epic comebacks aside, once one team gains the upper hand their ordinance drops start raining in and they gain map control over the random weapon spawns or vehicle respawns it is very difficult for a team to claw it’s way back. To date I’ve only played about 50 games in matchmaking and I can say I’ve seen it happen more times than I am comfortable with. It creates an unfair advantage for one team and pretty much spoils the game for everyone involved. The problem is exacerbated in playlists with smaller player counts as the missing player(s) takes up a greater percentage of the team. For players added late to games where one team is already in a stranglehold they’re being forced into games that they most likely can do nothing to affect the outcome of (again, I’m sure there are plenty of stories of ZOMG EPIC COMEBACK! but yeah, I’d bet anything that the “-Yoink!-, I got added to this game super late and it was pointless” stories outweigh them). When/if 343i gets around to adding a visible skill rank to the system the cries of people who were forced into losses will be intense. In. Tense.
On a positive note it does help playlists like Big Team where the player count is large and finding enough players to make up a full game can take time. With the larger team sizes in BTS starting a game 8 v. 7 is usually not a huge deal and preferred to having to wait (how many people have memories of waiting, waiting, waiting for that final person in Halo 3 only to have the timer reset itself and the other 6 matched players you’ve found disappear?). Also, if players are added very early in matches before things get out of hand they usually seem to be able to stabilize the match to a degree. One team will still have had an un-earned power play (wuttup NHL lockout!) but the other team has a much better chance of overcoming the early disadvantage.
I have zero clue as to how malleable the new matchmaking system is but my hope is that they’ve thought ahead and set the system up to allow for flexibility to changes. If it is even possible to modify the Join-in-Progress system here are my suggestions:
1. Eliminate uneven team starts for smaller-team (teams of 3-5 players) games. Big Team still gets the matchmaking speed boost.
2. Prevent uneven team starts in the playlists that are rumored to be coming down the pipe with visible skill ratings that are intended to be “competitive”. Must. Prevent. Massive. QQ Wave.
3. Restrict the period during which players can join games late so they’d only be added to games early in the match or while the score is still reasonably competitive. This one would be tough as I’m sure the time it takes a player to join a game can vary wildly and the match could be in a very different state by the time the player is actually added to the game.
I am loving Halo 4 so far, 343i has really exceeded my expectations on the gameplay front but I really wish they’d done a multi-player beta to iron out matchmaking. They’ve made some really bold gameplay design decisions and I have to give them a lot of credit for daring to mix things up but I didn’t really think the matchmaking system from Bungle’s Halo’s needed this much mixing up. It was solid and aside from not handling quitters well I felt it was damn near perfect. Halo 4’s needs some work, hopefully 343i is willing and able to keep working on it.
I’d much rather join a losing team and/or start an uneven match, then have to deal with countless teammates that rage quit for whatever stupid reason, leaving us forever down the entire game. Lets not forget about people that quit one after another, until it’s 1 V 4. Yeah, I MUCH prefer join in progress, it’s a small price to pay.
I disagree. I believe JIP promotes quitting along with starting games 3 v 4.
I can’t tell you how many times I was playing with me and 2 friends in a party and itd pair us against 4 other people. I think “oh ok, quick start, we’ll pick up a 4th” but literally 4-5 games in a row, even with quitting a lobby after a game, WE WOULD NEVER GET A 4TH paired with us either in the in looking for players nor as a part of JIP.
Someone dropping and it being 3v4 and JIP not working, I can deal with. Several freaking games in a row without ever being given a 4th player: UNACCEPTABLE.
Now I won’t lie, its not game breaking for me. But it is HIGHLY annoying to the point I make sure I have my full team of 4 or 5 of us for our playlist before starting out. I just hope 343 sees posts like this and help us out.
