the infamous halo black screen

well, we all find it annoying when someone quits then the game going to black screen to select a new host, re-connect you to the host, sync everyone or what ever the reasons are, is this going to be worse, a lot worse in halo 4 because of join in progress?

with join in progress, players are even more likely to drop out of the game they’re in if they’re not doing so well right from the start this could cause black screen to happen, then another person joins taking his place causing yet another black screen to happen to bring him into the game, with the amount this will go on the game could be practically unplayable.

anyone who plays a lot of customs where should know where i’m comming from, when people constantly join and quit the game comes to a standstill for a good 10mins.

or, are we going to have a stricter host system then we’ve had before? i mean have the game try and stick to the current host as much as possible and only look for a new one if the connection has degraded significantly? but then, over time when people move the other games this could become more frequent from larger variations in player connections from players being matched from all over because there isn’t enough people close by to be matched against.

could it be worse or did 343i figure out away to keep halos great net code while having it work with join in progress? personally i’m concerned that it could ruin matchmaking but i am also aware that in the bravo competitive video kynan mentioned putting of effort into getting it all to work so i’m optimistic.

what about you?

I don’t know, but I really hate black screen.

That moment when you almost got an unfrigginbelieveable medal and the black screen appears resetting everything again…

There wouldn’t be blank screens if there were dedicated servers =P.

But hopefully its better than past halo games, the blank screen i mean - not having this problem.

But you have to agree halos net code is getting better each game, connection wise.

It doesn’t matter how good the netcode is, if the host quits, it has gotta have time to change, and in this day and age, that still requires pausing the game and changing it.

I know, i’m just saying halos netcode is better than what it was in halo 3.

Ya it sucks.

honestly, i think thats more to do with personal connections getting faster and more reliable.

Reach’s netcode was a big improvement, no doubt, but playing Reach on something like a 2D/L and less than 0.5 Upload, is hell.

ISPs are offering a lot better packages now, for much better prices, including fibre optic.

I’d say the same for Halo 4, the netcode can only be as good as you allow it to be with your connection.

Recently tried a bit of Halo 3 again. Still unplayable.

yea, it did a much better job at simulating and masking the imperfections then halo 3 did, also had a better host selection when the connection quality was there, i don’t mean individually but total of the people in the lobby.

but still, it wouldn’t have made any real difference without the advances we’ve had in connection though, without the advances we’d still be suffering from nothing but -Yoink- and errors because of the larger latency and higher packet loss ratio being a lot more common then it is now.

oh, and i play on 0.5 up with ~ 200 ping to my average host, damn those Americans and at the moment, this is the best connection in my area!

give it hitscan and i bet that will be a different story.

Instead of just boring black screen,I wish 343 could just put a screen of random artwork(perhaps some of the menu’s artwork?)Or something else to look at while we wait like 2 min.

This is correct. And all the lag switches the little kids like to use would be useless with dedicated servers too. But despite that the cost would get passed on to us anyway, they were too cheap to utilize dedicated servers.

Dancing Spartans would want me to get a black screen.

that actually would be nice, but i don’t think the xbox has enough RAM for it alongside all of multiplayer being loaded.

kegler, dedicated servers doesn’t fix any of the connection issues though, you can still suffer from latency problems and such just as much with dedicated servers, if anything dedicated servers make it more unfair because it gives an advantage to people who live and better locations or can afford better connections, peer 2 peer provides a better connection to the majority overall.

though, if you have a lot of players then peer 2 peer is great, if you have not so many then dedicated servers are actually better because it offers a better host connection then anyone else you’re likely to get matched against, larger player base means you’re more likely to get matched with people in your area which results in a better connection while a smaller player base results in you getting matched with people everywhere, cross seas and such degrading the overall connection quality so dedicated servers come in and just provide that better connection.

that creates a dilemma though, is it economically viable to provide and upkeep dedicated servers when you have a small player base? and when its a successful game dedicated servers aren’t needed.

I think like commando
Look at Super Smash Bros Brawl, while you are waiting to the other players, you can kick the bag-man?you know, that thing that fighters punch for train
I wish that in Halo 4 we could see a few artworks,or maybe the trailers of Halo 4 or something like that

yea, would make black screens not so much a nuisance but something we can enjoy, when i first encountered black screens i honestly thought the game had froze …

i am going to be expecting stuff like this in halo 5 though, with all the new hardware on the 720 developers are going to be able to cram sooooooooooooo much more into there games, going from 512mb RAM to maybe 2-4gbs offers a lot and a long with a more powerful processor things are going to get a lot more detailed and complex.

I do hope black screens happen less often, because if they don’t I just won’t play MM that much.

I vote for cheesy elevator music to play while waiting on black screen.

> I vote for cheesy elevator music to play while waiting on black screen.

and you’ll have me getting very pissed of at it …
