Simply stupid and seems immensely forced. In my opinion, the Chief in the condition he was after Cortanas death could easily have done something unacceptable.
ONI is definitely just setting him up for some reason. If I had to guess it’s because he is trying to help Halsey. The Hunt the Truth website makes it pretty clear that they are trying to make a fake backstory for him. I agree though. A clone Chief would be a really stupid idea.
So why is there another John?
Now what I think about it.
“Promise you’ll find out which one of us is the machine.”
“She said that to me once, about being a machine.”
Those words could have new meaning. I know clones aren’t exactly machines but…

I just cant wrap my head around the fact, that ONI would try to do something like this.
After everything Chief has done, why?

I would not call Chief that unhinged as you have described him, he seemed to be pretty stable in Escalation, even if he did become a bit of a workaholic.

“You say that like, soldiers and humanity are two different things, I mean soldiers aren’t machines, they are just people”.
Chief never showed his humane side and was always known as this unstoppable killing machine. I think, that spending most of his life fighting and being a soldier, Chief forgot the fact, that he himself is only a human too, which Cortana was trying to hint a bit.

Nah, that’s just the whole “mindless” super soldier in armor thing.
Locke is blaming Chief for the destruction around, but that doesn’t mean Chief directly caused it. It could be a decision the Chief made that left the UNSC vulnerable. Maybe Locke is blaming Chief for leaving them when he could have helped prevent whatever happened. Maybe Chief unwittingly unleashed some Forerunner technology or something. There are many possibilities that could explain Locke’s monologue and the circumstances around it.
We’re talking about episode 1 of Hunt the Truth, right?
Ok, good.
Personally, I think (and really hope) that it was just diving into the conspiracy revolving around his kidnapping, and not actually a hint towards a rampant clone. As we know, the clones of the Spartan children died after a few years, I’m sure John’s was no exception.
Plus, stealing this idea directly out of Mass Effect 3’s Citadel DLC is just silly. It worked amazingly for that game, but it just doesn’t seem good for Halo. No, I think there’s something more going on here, something that we don’t know of yet. Maybe John went to awaken Mendicant Bias, only to find that it decided to attack humanity rather than help? I don’t know, but the clone idea just doesn’t work for me.

Maybe the Chief released Mendicant Bias in hopes of reviving Cortana, hence the E3 2013 trailer then it backfired horribly and caused the chaos showed in the trailer.
Then ONI fabricated the story in making people believe Chief did it knowingly and on purpose. Would be logical, since they want to replace him, at least according to Dr.Halsey.

At this point, I will not be buying theories about Chief wanting to revive Cortana. John looked like he already went through the acceptance phase by the time of Escalation.

lol man it doesn’t have to be the end-all-be-all theory that Chief has a rampant clone, we’re just theorizing for fun.

Seems only logical regarding the symbolism with all the Cortana chip squeezing in the trailer etc. I just think, that it has something to do with her or the Chief is doing something in her memory or “for” her.
As I keep saying, John is genetically perfect.
What if Chief has been long dead/ still out somewhere and it turns out we’ve been playing as clones! Remember the saying “spartans never die” and chief the savoir of humanity. Cloning him and continuing the legacy to keep hopes high makes sense and suddenly the clone gets corrupted.
All i know is this is good -Yoink- lol
