The Hydra: the best/worst weapon in Halo 5?

The MLRS Hydra: six shot, lock-on targeting, miniature-rocket launcher. Two shots to kill an enemy player.

Superb in close-range game play. Effective at medium/long range ambushes and fire support.

Easily avoidable in tight spaces/buildings/hallways. Takes time to reload full clip, leaving player vulnerable to enemy fire.

Useful against boosted shields and light vehicles. Less efficient against heavily armored vehicles and leader-class AI foes.

Is it truly a useless weapon? Is it awesome to use? Or is it simply the player wielding it?

It isn’t useless at all. Even with my lack of skill, it’s still an effective weapon in the Arena setting. At least against enemy Spartans, I’d argue that it’s overpowered.

I agree. However, there are some who don’t like the Hydra and state that it’s utterly useless in a fight.

People are quick to denounce something as useless when they’re not proficient with it or after using it incorrectly a few times and refusing to use it again aftewards. I’m absolutely horrible with the Grinder, but I’ve seen other people use it very well. Doesn’t make it useless - I just can’t use it myself.

I’ve seen people spam-fire Plasma Casters wildly without hitting a thing, but that doesn’t mean the caster is bad since they wasted a whole weapon without getting a single kill: It just means they weren’t using it right.

I thought it was a bit too good for a non weapon-pad power weapon. If they had limited the ammo a bit and maybe decreased the tracking just a small amount, I would be fine with it

I guess that sounds fair. Maybe some people hate it for being a little too powerful…well, except for me.

I don’t think it’s either useless or awesome, it’s more situational than other weapons but can be used pretty effectively when there is opportunity for such.

Though it’s not that optimal against good players, much like the needler, for it’s slow projectile speed. + players with map experience know which maps have which weapons so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise either.

I think it’s great. Similar to what has been alluded to already, it’s very powerful if you know how to use it well. It’s not OP like the SPNKR Prime or anything though. Along with the Plasma Caster, the Hydra is one of my favorite new weapons from H5.

The Hydra Launcher reaches its full potential when used against unsuspecting Spartans. Also effective when used on large maps as the projectiles will sometimes loop back around if they miss initially. For me personally, I always stagger my shots when I use it. I fire one shot in hopes of my target burning their boost to dodge, then I fire the second and third which usually results in a kill.

It’s all about how you use it.

It is pretty much useless once you reach a certain rank/skill level. It’s easily avoidable because of the slow rocket velocity unless you’re out in the open, and when you’re playing against players who know what they’re doing, you rarely get the opportunity. Then add on the terrible reload speed and it’s a weapon that only really shines in big team.

That’s precisely how I consider it. It’s not the weapon itself that win’s the fight; it’s how it’s used/the person using it.

The Hydra is far from useless but it is definitely annoying. It’s only a two shot kill and tracks players. Not to mention can curve over or around walls, this was the worst addition to competitive imo. The weapon is just fine for social.
