The Hydra! (New Halo 5 Grenade Launcher)

So it has been popping up in the gameplay trailers and recently on Halopedia.
While a lot of attention has been focused on the new “bazooka” style rocket launcher, there is the quiet announcement of the Hydra!

6 shots. Described as an “airburst grenade launcher” meaning the projectiles will explode in the air rather than bouncing. Whether this means it will detonate on contact with the player or in the air just next to them isn’t quite clear. From the gameplay trailers it also shows the projectiles have a tracking capability much like the Plasma Launcher in Halo Reach. Whether this means it will require charging up to fire or not again isn’t currently clear, neither is if the tracking is part of a lock-on feature or rather the projectiles follow the reticule’s movement.

I think my only complaint is that its a human weapon. In halo 4 the only semi-unique weapons were added to the human arsenal, while the covenant arsenal got nothing new, and the forerunner arsenal was just sad. Unless we’re going to start fighting humans, it doesn’t enhance the campaign experience, as sounds too complex for the flood to bother using properly.

I have a feeling this gun was put in the game to give you something to use your thrusters for. Like whenever someone shoots one of these at you if you thrust to the side at the last second you can dodge the tracking projectile.

I get that, but we haven’t seen any Covie weapons yet (Besides Prophet’s Bane)! There is still hope
And I bet that if they keep most of the Forerunner weapons, the ones with the “disintegrate body” effect will finally find their true calling against the Flood.
Think how good the Suppressor would be against a swarm of infection forms!

As if 343 hasn’t already added enough 1 shot weapons now we need more laucnhers

Perhaps this is a legendary weapon like the Prophet’s Bane?

Can’t say I’m too excited for a weapon that locks on to Infantry, much less one that does that while also air-bursting.

I am assuming the Needler will still be in the game and that this isn’t a replacement. If it is a replacement, fair enough.

As an unimportant sidenote, I do like its appearance regardless.

I’d be willing to bet that to give it balance and not let it be overpowered, the projectiles themselves won’t be that powerful. Maybe it will take 3/4 to kill you. And the tracking can probably be easily overcome by using your thrusters at the last moment.

How do you know it’s a one-shot? The magazine size would seem to indicate it isn’t.

This only makes me want Halo:Reach’s grenade launcher back even more. My favorite weapon in any Halo game. Although I believe the EMP effect should be removed.

So essentially it’s the Plasma Launcher combined with Reach’s grenade launcher, right? Except lacking the interesting covenant design of the former and the learning curve of the latter.

… Would it kill them to bring back the Reach GL in all it’s glory? If there’s one thing Reach got right, it was that…

There is really a lot of focus on UNSC weapons. Well I guess they are training Spartans, but… Either human weapons are a focus, or there are a lot of weapons.

I’d say it seems more like the Plasma Launcher mixed with the Halo 3 Brute Shot.

pls return the plasma launcher, coolest weapon I have ever used
lol the grenade launcher was trash, I don’t want that fail back

When you throw a grenade over a long distance and get a kill, you get a hail mary.
Maybe when you get a kill over a long distance with the Hydra you get a “Hail Hydra!”

Looks okay, I guess.

What I’m more interested though is what map that pic is from, OP.

I know what you mean! There has been a lot of buzz about this map on the forums recently. It does look like an overgrown, run-down version of “Truth (Midship remake)” but would they put 2 versions of the same map in the game?

They’ve shown the lightrifle and prophets bane but yes we’ve really only seen human tech. Perhaps they want us to get used to the human smart scope before showing us the covie/forerunner versions?

Seems like a wasted concept on a unsc weapon. All 343 needed to do was bring back the pro-pipe and there would be much rejoicing. It seems like the hydra could have been better as a forerunner weapon

seems someone here couldn’t use the reach grenade launcher, 1 hint bud it was called skill
