The Horrendous Lag of Halo 4

Dear 343 Industries,

To start off with, I love the direction y’all have gone with Halo 4. It is honestly my favorite game. This leads me to my next point, it’s unplayable due to the constant lag issues. I have no problem playing games such as Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty, but once I try to play Halo…I cant even get a kill due to the connection issues. Every other internet connected device in my house has no problems connecting and using my internet, but your game refuses to play smooth and efficiently. I don’t know if it’s something y’all are failing to do, if you’re servers can’t handle it, or what the issue is. All I can say is that if it’s not figured out and the servers start to run at least better, I won’t be putting down the game for just a couple hours i’ll be putting it down for good as long as you’re at the head of the franchise.

Sincerely, A decade long halo fan.

it doesn’t have “constant” lag issues. That may be your connection.

However, some maps, such as SHATTER cannot be played on splitscreen in matchmaking due to framerate problems.

I have a halo 4 frickin xbox. It should be able to do the job just fine.

I am top two players in almost every match in Splitscreen w/ my son in BTB. But then we get Shatter and it lags so bad (framerate, not connection) that we lose 0/22 and shtuff like that.

The screen bounces around constantly and you can’t aim at anyone with any consistency.

That is honestly ruining my experience.

Lag has been an overwhelming issue for me as of yet. True it exists, but so far its been scarce. The odd thing for me is that lag always occurs in only 3 situations; 1) Just as I’m about to kill someone: 2) Encounters with a scattershot opponent: 3) I have the shotgun.

Lag for me results in death nearly every time, as soon as it kicks in I know I’m a gonner.

The best way to eliminate lag is the following:

#1. Wire your Xbox into your router or modem via an ethernet cord. Plain and simple.
#2. Turn off or discontinue usage of other devices that are consuming bandwidth. This includes your cell phone, computer(s) and tablet devices. If someone is streaming netflix or even watching On Demand via your cable provider which is also your internet provider-that’s a bandwidth killer.
#3. Upgrade your internet services. Satellite internet isn’t sufficient, nor is a DSL connection. Your upload/download speed needs to be at least 5/10 MB and it needs to be a wired connection from a telephone pole.

I’d also suggest stopping by this thread!

My connection.

And yes, all the proper ports are forwarded and I’m running wired.

I rarely, if ever, have connection issues in other games. And yet, in Halo 4 there are multiple sessions (I’d say 1 in 10) where lag renders the game unplayable, at least for me. The members of the other team don’t seem to have issues though… The friends I play with have the same experience during those games.

In particular, it’s extremely common with Join In Progress games. So much so that we’ve started immediately going to the dashboard whenever one pops up.

I initially thought it was an issue stemming from playing with people in other regions but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It’s extremely annoying, to say the least.

The matchmaking system is terrible for lag, it seems to select a host purely on where it is located rather then the actual performance of their internet connection (upload/latency).

I had to quit several games due to horrible host selection last night, double checked everything my end - ping was fine, no errored data packets etc. Finally got into a good game with a good host… took a while though.

I have a gaming hookup which plays other shooters consistently well. H4 lags in BTB alot This lag and the fact that BTB really no longer exists makes this game unfun.
There has been ample time for 343 to put objective gametypes in BTB, but they have not. Clearly it overloads the 360 or just does not work with the current mess they have made with the game.

The game needed dedicated servers. Not having them in this day and age for the #1 franchise makes no sense and pisses me off.

OR

At least a good connection option especially for International players who have no option to help avoid lag.

343 have no idea

And what if I’m paying for 25mbps and have no other devices hooked up? What if Ive tried wired, wireless, restarting both modem and router. Moving it through my house and still get lag? (And the frame rate makes it all even worse)

I’ve been playing halo since the beginning and even accepted odst and reach in their own way but the multiplayer in this game, with the lag, is unacceptable. Especially because I spent a hundred bucks on a game I have been waiting 3 years for.

The campaign was great but I really looked forward to matchmaking, but for what? Dudes teleporting in front of me while apparently killing me(even though kill cam shows them shooting the ground, rocks and even random birds out of the sky).

A Disappointed fan.

I find it tough to melee because that split second I think I’ve got them they slide right passed. Its like they are covered in butter.

I have a good connection. But sometimes, Halo 4 lags with that special Halo 3 MM lag, where the player is running ahead of the game, and they can find themselves randomly somewhere at an instant. Or randomly killed.

Reach, on the other hand, had little lag even with the worst connection. I have only experienced lag in Reach a couple of times. In fact, I just got Halo 4 on CHRISTMAS and I have experienced more laggy moments on it then I did in Reach. And I have had Reach since the day it came out.

The networking is just a broken mess.

When you play with a group of friends that live in the same area with less than 30ms of latency between you but someone else pulls host resulting in the entire group teleporting and blackscreening you know the game is just -Yoinked!-.

If nothing else 343i’s networking team are incompetent and should be replaced.

i have no lag issues in mm - but spartan ops is a different story.

every spartan ops co-op game i’ve played has been HORRIBLE…

the lag makes it virtually impossible to play.

firefight in reach NEVER lagged like i’m experiencing with spartan ops.

it’s ridiculous - and it’s NOT my connection.

I live in China.

No issues whatsoever unless I know my internet has issues, like ISP turning it off for some reason.

Huge lag for pretty much everyone I know in ontario and elsewhere in the world, to the point where we reached around SR50 (still a large investment in time) but no longer have an interest to play… Halo 4 matchmaking is brilliant, but if the lag isn’t addressed soon I fear that much support to the game might disappear. Even amongst the lag we maintained high k/d ratios so it wasn’t as though we were just frustrated because we were losing, it just genuinely was no longer fun due to how much lag was present.
