The Holy Trinity

Way back when Halo was released Bungie said Halo contains two major things that set it apart from other FPS games. One was the idea of 30 seconds of fun repeated over and over, the second was the brilliantly fantastic combat that comprised of the holy trinity GRENADES-MELEE-WEAPONS as long as these were the main focus of combat Halo would never falter. Now fast forward to Halo 5, it has neither of these in it, there is no more 30 seconds of fun repeated over and over, the campaign is one of if not THE most boring campaigns ever to grace a Halo video game, and the holy trinity is no longer relevant. As apart from Grenades-Melee-Weapons we also have Sprint-Clamber-Spartan Charge-Boost. For me those last four destroyed the Halo combat as we know it, maps are now stretched out and overly complicated, the radar has been reduced in size which makes it useless when your enemy can sprint up on you before you know it, Spartan charge is an abomination in the eyes of 99.9% of everyone I have ever played Halo with.

343 did say they would release an old school playlist with no sprint, boost, charge or clamber. When they do this I might put more time into the game but for now, and this saddens me deeply, I will put Halo to one side. I might jump on every now and again but for me, Halo is no longer my go to game on Xbox.

When did they say an old school playlist? That’d leave the veterans less alienated. There’s a reason Halo 5 is not on Xbox Live’s top ten very often.

I agree about the radar and maps. I never play arena because of that problem. Warzone is the only thing I can stand because it offers a useable radar and maps that arent overcomplicated mini maps. I mean Halo 5 feels like one huge effort to shrink the game.
“Heres faster spartans, smaller maps, smaller radars and quicker TTK”
Arena is undoubtedly competitive but it missed what past Halo games had which was strategy. I cant perform a strategic flank in Halo 5 anymore because the maps are so small, the spawns are so bad and the weapons kill so fast.

The problem with an old school playlist, is I think the Halo 5 themed maps are designed with Clamber in mind, unless we were to play forged remakes on older ones scaled properly, which would be an amazing playlist

I thought I read it in one of the old community updates, but I’ve just been through them and I am mistaken. I do apologise for the mistake. But an old school playlist would be welcome by a lot of halo players I know.

Huh, thats funny because I use all three on a normal basis, plus the 30 seconds of power weapon fun if thats what you were talking about. What are you talking about?

I was expecting the Holy Trinity to be Arby, Chief, & Cortana.

I wasn’t aware they removed grenades, melee or any of the weapons in general from Halo 5, I wonder what game I have been playing for the last few months.

i was expecting to read something about the father, the son, and the holy spirit. disappointment is over 9000

The 30 seconds of fun refers to the enemy encounters in campaign. Each encounter had to be fun and challenging. The fights couldn’t be too short, nor could they be long, dragged out fights. 30 seconds was the sweet spot. Of course, depending on how good (or bad) someone is at the game, they could be a little longer or shorter.

Oh, ok. Thanks.

Haha, I have no idea what he was trying to say either. Was thinking the same thing.

Didn’t they openly admit they nerfed the hell out of radar because (and I quote) “good players use it to much and weak players don’t use it at all”

As far as excuses go, they couldn’t have given a worse one.

I was expecting it to be God, Jesus and…

…Tacos.

The last abilities you added don’t affect gameplay except Spartan Charge. 343i can just remove that ability in a game type tweak (I have turned it off in my game types that I have made). Arena based MM should have Spartan Charge turned off but that is it. The rest is just you being a whiner.

Hmmmmm my grenade kills, melee kills and my headshot kills I got from dropping shield after bouncing a grenade of the wall before turning a corner would beg to differ.

idkk which halo 5 you’ve been playing but the holy trinity is still here and it is strong. All that mobility was honestly laid on top of the trinity.

those abilities he is referring to completely break the fundamentals of halo so I think he is well within his rights to criticise their addition to the game.

The arena maps are AWFUL, so I agree

I’m gonna call BS on this one. Sprint undeniably has caused game-play changes to the franchise, such as the up-scaling of maps, increased ease of escaping death, delaying close encounters because of the time taken to ready the weapon. Small changes like these do in fact create a larger impact, and do serve to slow the game down.

The changes brought by clamber are extremely noticeable, and are reflected in the way maps are designed. Jumps are designed to be clambered, which makes them significantly easier to do. The absence of skill jumps creates a lack of depth in maps.

Finally, to say thrusters don’t affect gameplay is just silly. They play a key role in map traversal and CQC combat with Halo 5. Thrusters do throw off opponents in strafe, do close the gaps for CQC weapons, and are a weak counter to Spartan-Charge.

Am I saying that I dislike the changes these mechanics bring? Absolutely not. However, do not so easily dismiss mechanics as frivolous. They were added in with the full intent to alter gameplay in some way.

OP, you clearly watched the Bungie Vidocs way too much
