I’ve just realised yet another issue I have with 343’s art design. In the Halo 5 opening cutscene, Fireteam Osiris is briefed by a holographic Commander Palmer on a floating, gigantic holographic design. This thing literally floats down from the freaking ceiling and displays TONS of information, nowhere near as much as holographic displays previously have in Halo. The whole concept and design of this thing feels so… wrong. It doesn’t look like something that belongs in Halo, and I’m relatively sure that we haven’t seen humans with this sort of levitation technology until now. 343 yet again designs stuff without any thoughts than “Oooh I just thought of something that would look sooo kewl, we should like totally put this in the next game!”. Ugh.
My head canon for it is that since they are on a mission for ONI while being ONI and since ONI always has the coolest toys… Its a special ONI Pelican that has been modified.
Deslispace Jump dude…
Considering the other projections you speak of happened almost a decade previously canonically (I’m estimating), is it really farfetched to believe the technology has improved? Also doesn’t it make sense that post-covenant war, the UNSC starts distributing more Tech around?

They were on a mission for ONI? You’d expect a mission like that to be more off the books, and directed by someone other than Palmer, right?

6 Years, Jul died in 2558, Halo Reach to 3 take place in 2552. I get that technology would advance, but holographic displays increasing in size by around 5x and humanity having levitation technology of some sort that is only implemented in holo displays doesn’t make a lot of sense to me personally.

What?
We have hover boards that float a few centimeters off the ground today. It’s not crazy to think that we will get more floaty stuff 500 years in the future. I don’t see what’s so bad about it honestly. What I don’t like is that they got briefed seconds before their mission actually had begun.

Halo obviously follows a very different course of technologic advancement than our world though. I highly doubt that we’ll be using bullets 536 years in the future, or that we’ll travel in cars relatively the same to modern ones.
- I’m mostly just annoyed that I managed to find ANOTHER thing 343 just added in there that’s so different to our previous experiences. - That annoys me a lot too, but hey, we needed exposition somehow (albeit this was a rather distasteful way of doing so).

Locke is an ONI agent. Jul escaped from ONI custody, so yes why wouldn’t it be an ONI op. Not all ops are going to be black book.

Jul was in custody? What? Did I miss a lot in this cutscene?

From the books. He escaped from a research base of theirs.
Regardless Humanity has a few of the Forerunner engineers which is why Infinity is so advanced. It stands to reason ONI would use a few to make a few special gadgets like a specialized dropship for ONI Spartan agents.

Oh. I feel like that is irrelevant this point though, considering Jul fueled the requiem conflict, which put the whole UNSC on his back, so I doubt that it was only an ONI op.

But its not. Spartans work for ONI almost as much as they work for the regular UNSC forces. It is not far fetched at all to assume this is an ONI sanctioned assassination against Jul. Ergo the specialized Pelican.
Edit: I’d also like to point out that ONI’s goal from when the UNSC-Covenant war ended was to start a civil war among the Elites. Which Jul did for them. It wasn’t until he found Requim that he really became a problem and thus a threat.

It’s not far-fetched to believe that ONI had no involvement either, and this is just an ordinary pelican though.

But we know its not. From viewing the Pelicans in Warzone we can kinda get a glimpse that they are not the same as the one Locke and his team ride. It is far more probable that the opening scene Pelican is a special variant and thus fits into canon perfectly.

You never know. Maybe energy weapons harm the environment or something. My guess is it’s a special pelican or something standard in all pelicans as of 2558.
This seems like a really weird thing to get bent out of shape about. In previous Halos we have seen that the UNSC was capable of creating detailed 3D Holograms as far back as 2531. But a bunch of projected 2D images is crazy?

didn’t one of the Pelicans in H4 project a full sizes Hologram of Captain Del Rio.

Yes. I’m not sure if that was the same or different though.
It never bothered me, technology advances in halo. hey we can send out holograms of our spartans, so why not a hologram tv, or dosplay thing… what ever it would be called.

Holographic display is the proper term I think.

It really isn’t though.
Opening cutscene with Osiris II Forge Pelican II Forge Pelican from relatively similar view (horrible resolution though)
