The Graphics

I’ve been happy with the graphics from all of the other games… until now. The graphics in some points of the game look really cheap. The Covenant look fine and all of the vehicles look fine. What I don’t like are the UNSC buildings and everything in forge. Nothing looks right. Everything looks really fake and not up to par with what Halo should look like. I even had a rendering problem on a mission. I’ve never had that problem until this game. Don’t get me wrong, I like the game just not some of the in-game graphics.

I just don’t like the UNSC buildings because they just feel so damn generic.

Rendering is a bit off but I think you’re more upset with the art style rather than the graphics which are imo pretty good. But I have to agree with you, the art style of the buildings, spartans, covenant etc look very bland and fake or as nova said generic.

True. Very fake forge indeed compared to halo 3’s finely crafted experience and reach’s still very authentic one.

what should halo look like?

First thing I noticed was the art style. Not that I hated it but I felt like we should be further along especially being on a next gen console. I don’t expect ultra realism from Halo and truth be told I don’t want it. I’ve always appreciated what they’ve done with the game however, I was taken aback by this iteration. Halo 4, if memory serves me right, looked better in a lot of ways. Wasn’t overly realistic. Just enough to maintain the Halo feel but “darker” atmospherically.

You’re talking about the art style, not the graphics. I have to agree tho some of the art style changes are bleh.

It’s hard to put Halo’s “look” into words, but I believe that Halo 5 should have had graphics similar to Halo 2’s anniversary. Instead of taking a step forward in the graphics design, I believe that they took a step back. I can’t just bash on the devs though. I wasn’t in their head when they were putting the designs together. Maybe they wanted to try something new and that’s ok. I’m just providing feedback on what I thought.

Maybe art style is what I’m trying to say. Still, forge should not look how it does. Like someone said earlier in this thread, it shouldn’t look too real, just real enough.

I figured it out! Some of the UNSC stuff looks too smooth and that’s what I’m saying about forge as well. Everything needs to look a little more beat up than it does. That’s what I’ve been trying to convey. I just figured it out.

Halo 2 anniversary

You’re definately going on about art style then. Especially when you said you like h2A over h5s. They do share the same graphics but completely differ in art style. I don’t necessarily mind the unsc looking so clean or smooth but having some more rugged or beat up texture wouldn’t be bad either.

i get what you mean by forge definitely standing out on its smooth textures, it could benefit more from rugged texture which is something I think has been slowly but surly improving, it’s just a matter of 343 continuing to add more and if it gets utilized more once added.

In a lot of ways I think the graphics look worse than Halo 4. I’m not an expert, but I think a lot of the textures were degraded to maintain 60fps.

Just look at this.

The textures on the ground look like something out of a PS2 game. It’s really disappointing because I thought Halo 4’s graphics looked amazing for its time. Asides from some of the environments looking too clean and the Spartans in multiplayer looking like they’re made of plastic.

Forge objects looks like simple shapes without texture and tinted by colors.
I think Halo 4 and Halo 2 anniversary looks very good. Metal looks like metal, wood looks like wood.

Agreed. The graphics looks nice from a distance but up close its just a messy combination

They made a lot of cuts to the game to hit 60fps, but in my opinion, judging based on how other games look using the same adaptive resolution while being 60fps (Doom, H2A), they made too many pointless cuts, ESPECIALLY with anisotropic filtering and LoD. A lot of the textures already don’t look great, especially on the ground, but with little (or what appears to be NO) anisotropic filtering (which isn’t even a particularly taxing feature), it looks like they’re just smeared with grease, or even just basic colors.

H2A has great visuals, and texture quality as well, while being 60fps with adaptive res. Doom looks godly using the same practice, and very rarely, if ever, dips below 60fps. What’s H5’s excuse? Almost gotta wonder if they actually cut more than they needed to just to give themselves breathing room with the 60fps cap, which is good for the framerate, but has the nasty effect of making the game look dated out of the gate. Also, the art style is, in my opinion, incredibly generic, especially with the Prometheans and UNSC. Prometheans don’t look any different than your copy-and-paste sci-fi evil robots, and the UNSC is just far too bland.

In my opinion, Destiny or H2A is how the art style and direction should have went after Reach. Halo 3 and Reach were never aimed at pushing the limits of the platform or having mindblowing visuals, but they blew minds anyway through the usage of a strong art direction and strong use of colors, which is where Halo 5 falters heavily: it’s just… really bland. For me, the missions on Sanghelios are the only ones that stand out with lots of color and very good lighting, everything else just kinda blends together into a bland mix of grey, white, and blue.

I completely agree! Everything became very cookie cutter once Halo 4 was released. The art style is what made Halo feel like Halo. I feel like it was unique in the gaming community. I think that 343 needs to do their best to return to a similar art style of Halo 3 and Reach.

As this thread goes on, I’m realizing more and more what I’m trying to convey.

Could be better, halo reach was better

I’ve noticed this…the campaign graphics, I feel, are very very good…I know some people have issue with things not being ‘dirty’ enough, or somehow being ‘plasticky’ looking; I just haven’t seen it that way. But in some of those Forge-created maps that end up coming to playlists…well, to be blunt, they look like Lego-builder sets, in some ways. Over colorful and lurid.

I noticed a few of the graphical compromises while playing but the one level that really shows it is the Meridian level. Especially the floors. The floors look awful in some parts and don’t look current gen at all.

Also the lighting and shadows effects on this level are really noticeable as far as what they had to do to maintain 60 fps.

Thanks there are levels that look really good and you don’t notice the shortcuts as much.

As far as art style, I definitely prefer previous versions of the game.

Well hopefully in halo 6 they will take some notes from halo 3 and have a simpler, cleaner art style.
