The Graphical Journey of Halo

Hello Spartans

Disclaimer: I love the Halo triology, I’ve played it to bits, maybe a bit too much. I just disagree immensively with all the -Yoink- 343i is getting, with their take on the Halo Saga. Come on guys.

So, a couple of days after E3 is over, and the dust have settled, I usually check forums for remaining reveals and -Yoink- I might have missed.

What I did miss is the apparently TERRIBLE graphics from Halo 5, and how unrealistic they look, the blend washed out colors, the over-all lazy design.
So I figured, hm - I’ll find some comparisons, to see truly how terrible the grapics of Halo:5 Gaurdians really are.

I also figured that it would be a way to shut the kids up, who claim that Halo 1 - 3 was SUPER realistic and SO GOOD, while Reach was the start of something bad, and Halo 4 and 5 is just flat out terrible.

Screenshots are taken from the internet, tried to keep the BR as a theme for comparisons. Also; for lack of content, these are the clearest and most presentable screenshots without taking them myself.

Halo 1

Halo 2

Halo 3

Halo: Reach

Halo 4

Halo 5

A well reasoned post! And one I can agree with!

I aim to please.

Reason is something this forum needs.

Yay!!! I have an ally in this debate. I’m right on board with you.

I totally agree

I knew I was not alone, but unfortunately the few and displeased are often the loudest.

There is plenty of space on board.

I think(or hope) people just confuse graphics with art design, it’s pretty obvious that it’s graphically superior. As for the art style, I can see the criticisms, but I think it has some of the best designs so far of any of the halos, though I’ll have to see more to determine if it surpasses halo 3s art.

Honestly, the more advanced graphics technology gets, the harder it is to tell the difference between good and very good graphics. At least to me, anyway. The gap just gets smaller each time.
Personally, though, whilst the gap between 4 and 5 is smaller than say, 2 and 3, I can definitely see the difference. Everything looks cleaner and sharper, textures are better and such. And I definitely disagree with people saying 5 is washed out. Sunaion is a richly coloured environment. One of the prettiest warzones I’ve ever seen. If I were to accuse any Halo of being washed out, it would be Reach.

I think in the final game, we will see a bump up in resolution from what it is now. In the beta it 720p and I think that is still the case now.

I think people confuse washed out with heavy and dark, it seems sunarion is the contrast of purple, maroon, and dark blue structures and water against the bright white and yellow sky above. All those colors are demonstrating the opposite of washed out.

Personally, I love the H5 art design. It looks so technical, and everything has a purpose. I’m looking at your, Spartan Armor.
Can’t wait to see how the campaign pans out, how 343i manages to seperate the different planets with different art.

Oh I’ve been very loud about it. I actually went in and took a bunch screenshots between Halo 3 & 4 as evidence. Like THIS compared to THIS.

The hardest part is explaining to people that there’s a difference between what you prefer and what actually looks more realistic.

And holy crap, I just had deja vu of this same kinda discussion from back when Halo 4 came out.

Oooooh, you’re that dude. Yeah I saw your post, I think I upvoted it.
Shame I didn’t comment on it, cause it hit my soft spot. But yeah, I have this dance with the forums every time around release.

People are people. They don’t change.

Halo 5 looks absolutely spectacular. I just wish they’d tone down the hazy glows over the entire environments.

Great post, I am new around here, and based on the forums state recently, I was thinking about jumping ship, and enjoying Halo in solitude. It is nice to see some positive threads pop up! I don’t mind threads with criticisms, they just need to be well thought out and less abrasive. Everyone needs to remember, people make these games.

Back on topic, I forgot how great H4 looks, and H5 is looking even better!

From my point of view the first 2 Halos had a more life approach, from 3 foward Halo started to have a more fantasy. I prefer the more natural realistic look

This

I for one hated halo 4’s art style, but for some reason I like halo 5’s. Halo reach takes the cake for me though, it’s so perfect IMO.

Rather bizarre, when you realise that (in terms of art style, at least), Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians are the closer to each other than any other pair in the franchise.
What do you think changed?

There is a reason behind that, and it has to do with poly counts.

In case you don’t know, 3D models are made up of a bunch of small polygons. Back in 2001, you couldn’t design a model with too many polys or the computer couldn’t handle loading it. That is why older games have the sharp jagged models instead of smooth ones. Because when you add enough polys, the model will smooth out (similar to how the more sides you add to a shape, the more circular it appears).

But there is a problem with this. Just like with shapes, you get to a point where the difference is negligible. For instance, you wouldn’t really notice the difference between a 200 sided shape and a 400 sided shape even though the side count doubled. Same thing applies to the models in Halo games. The number of polys in the Halo 4 models was probably so high that you could almost double it without much difference. So gradually graphics will seemingly improve less and less because they could add thousands of polys but not see much of a difference.

And this is also why the graphics improved so much between early Halo games. You could add a couple dozen polys and the model would appear far better. But adding a couple dozen polys wasn’t that hard.
