This. I’m a lefty and my right hand only needs to be competent enough to tap buttons and pull the trigger. My left hand though… strafing and crouch jumping and whatnot.

I don’t get it… why would you ever oppose the presence of southpaw? It doesn’t cost you anything for it to be there, does it? Just don’t choose it, and no harm done. Does it really kill you just to know it’s there? I personally wouldn’t mind if there were a thousand control schemes (as long as I had an expedient way to flip through them).

The existence of Southpaw bothers me so much because in theory the control scheme is specifically designed for me, yet due to being raised in a righty world and having played on classic 2D consoles, I find it impossible to use my custom tailored control scheme.

It’s frustrating.

It’s true, he could very well be trolling. Whether it was intentional or not, he’s brought up a legitimate point. A good 10% of the world’s population is left handed. That means if ten million people purchase this game, one million will be at a natural disadvantage. Having your spartan be right handed when you are not is incredibly disorienting, regardless of which control scheme you use.

Now, it would change where the weapon is, and thus change your vision lines. That could be considered an unfair advantage, yeah? Besides, you use both hands for playing anyway. Look for an inverted controller to solve all your problems.

using a weapon has nothing to do with which arm you are dominant, it has everything to do with which eye. I am left handed but right eye dominant meaning when I am at the range I carry and fire my weapon with my right hand and throw grenades with my left (paintball). Besides it would take a lot in animations and rendering to achieve left hand firing so I doubt it would happen.

OP - I’m not going to show support for either on this, but given the circumstances, why is a control scheme customized for a left handed experience not enough? Why must the interface go further, even if the situation could very well be the exclusion of something else?

Freedom is the most important thing we can have. I don’t understand what a control scheme has to do with this. How does this change my Spartan to the public? Does me using Bumper Jumper have meaning related to my idea too?

Please explain what would be excluded if my freedom were allowed. What was excluded when the slaves were freed in America? I’ll tell you what: discrimination. Freedom began the long, hundred year war for freedom and equality. Are YOU against freedom and equality? Lefty 2012 isn’t. Lefty 2012 supports freedom and love among all people.

I who though this would be a great speech about how to end discrimination world wide starting with video games. No more stereotypic characters, no more marines that are worthless and sent on suicide missions, no more lack of female soldiers, no more pumped up male models or sexualised female models used for viewing please but in reality is far from how normal people look. No more war on the covenant or assumptions that “new guy = ancient evil” but polite discussions and piece. A try to understand each other and respect each other, after all Chief is the “invader”.
And it all comes down to Op wanting the character to hold his weapon differently, really?
Pointless imo, for all I care (right handed btw) chief could use his feet to shoot, his left hand or what ever, fine by me, feels pointless to even argue. Then again I know they got to do motion capture and stuff for all movie sequences, and hence they’ll just get either right or left “weapon arm” shot for those. Hiring another actor or shooting it all over seems like a waste of resources imo.

I could understand if they offered the “switch weapon side” for online or similar, since there are no pre made cut scenes or similar, buut yet again to me it feels quite pointless, a hollow victory, when one can focus on bigger things such as sexual or racial discrimination in video games.

Completely agree with you, OP. This is one of the longest running forms of discrimination in the history of videogaming. How can we be taken seriously as a community if we continue to reinforce these false stereotypes and oppress those who are different?
