Discrimination…it’s trouble all over. Dictionary.com has it as ‘treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit’. Bungie favored a certain way of playing…you’ll find out what way later in the post.
I have recently had much time to think. One topic struck me as essential to talk about a bit ago: Discrimination.
There are a lot of types of discrimination. Race, player skill, the way someone talks. I don’t intend to talk about any of those. No, the discrimination I talk about is… Against left handed people.
Go in-game. You notice when you play games you are right handed… Why is this? I have experimented with the ‘southpaw’ controls of past Halo games. Those are for left handed people, surely! Yet even when that’s on, your character is still right handed. This is offensive to my great people.
So I propose this: An option to switch how your character holds their weapon. This would make it so people don’t feel as left out. Think of the Chief also. I’m sure his hand hurts after meleeing all those people and throwing all those grenades. Let him change it up a bit, neh?
You might argue ‘It would get in the way of the radar’… Well no, no it wouldn’t. Opposite the radar is the score. I don’t see your arm getting in the way of that. I don’t see why it would interfere with radar either. You might also say people would discriminate if the person actually USED the left handed option. The thing is… It’s an option. If they want to hide their left handedness, they can.
It wouldn’t change gameplay at all. The hitbox would be the same. The aiming would be the same. The reticule is already in the center of the screen. It still would be.
If you think most of the ingame action takes place on the left side, and being left handed would get in the way, again, you don’t have to use it.
I know in real life I throw all my grenades with my left hand, hold my rocket launchers on the left side, and all that good stuff. After all, in multiplayer we’re supposed to be able to make ourselves, or at least our ideal representation of ourselves, neh?
I believe preventing the gaming industry’s discrimination policy would be a good addition. I see no reason not to at least consider it in the future.
